In 2003, the Lawrence Public Library partnered with the Dole Institute of Politics and Haskell University to capture the histories of Douglas County’s World War II veterans in the Lawrence Remembers the World War II Years Project. From 2005 to 2007, the Lawrence Public Library, the Watkins Museum of History, and the Kansas State Historical Society also embarked on a similar endeavor, the Kansas Veterans of World War II Oral History Project, which was funded by the Kansas State Legislature. This collection contains many of the video recordings and more information about the interviews conducted for these projects.

Alfred “Al” Gallup served in the United States Army (Air Corps) from 1941 to 1950. Interviewed by Kristen Miller on June 2, 2003, as part of the Kansas Veterans History Project, Gallup talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Gallup was born on November 5, 1919, in Marysville, Kansas. He graduated high school in 1932. After junior college, he enrolled at the University of Kansas. He graduated with a business degree in 1938. He signed up for the Aviation Cadet Training Program in 1940. He was called into the program on December 8, 1941. He first joined the 69th Reconnaissance Group and was later assigned to the 16th Cargo Combat Squadron, 4th Group. Gallup took part in the Hump Operation as a pilot. Following the war, he received his Master of Business Administration from Columbia University. He then taught ROTC at Kansas State University and the University of Kansas. Gallup began working in the life insurance industry in 1950. He retired from Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance in Lawrence after forty-seven years. He passed away on May 26, 2016. Throughout the interview, Gallup shared photographs and maps from his time in the service.

Antonette Louise Brecheisen grew up in Douglas County, Kansas, during the Second World War. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston as part of the Lawrence Remembers the World War II Years Project, Brecheisen talked about her experiences living in Kansas as a German American during the war years. Brecheisen was born on May 4, 1929. She married Lloyd Brecheisen in October 1952. Lloyd passed away in 1986.

An account of the resource
Archer Carlson served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946 in the 306th Combat Engineers, 81st Division, Eighth Army. Interviewed by Helen Krische and Brian Grubbs on June 13, 2006, Carlson talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Carlson was born on January 27, 1926, in Scandia, Kansas. He grew up in Baldwin City, Kansas. In 1942, at 17, he had a short-term duty with the US Navy V-12 Officer Procurement Program. Upon turning 18, he registered for the draft and was inducted into the Army on July 12, 1944, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He attended basic training and entered the Cavalry Replacement Corps at Camp Whiteside, both at Fort Riley, Kansas. Carlson was on his way to Europe the day before Germany surrendered (V-E Day). The ship then turned around and Carlson went to the Pacific theater. He was stationed on Leyte in the Philippines. Carlson then went to Japan. He was discharged on August 17, 1946.

Archie Hawkins World War II Interview

Archie Hawkins served in the United States Army Air Corps (83rd Squadron) from 1942 to 1945. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on August 14, 2006, Hawkins talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Hawkins was born on April 24, 1919, on the Pine Ridge Indian Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. His father was an Ogallala Sioux and his mother was a Yankton Sioux. They both attended Haskell University in Lawrence, Kansas, from 1908 to 1911. Hawkins also went to Haskell and graduated in 1940. He was drafted into the Air Corps in 1942. He trained in Saint Petersburg, Florida and Las Vegas, Nevada to be an aerial gunner. He then went to armor training at Lowry Field in Denver, Colorado. Hawkins then went overseas to the China Burma India (CBI) Theater. He spent time in Africa, Italy, and India. He flew 81 missions as a B-25 gunner. Upon returning to the States, he taught aerial gunnery in Arizona until the war ended. Hawkins passed away on August 23, 2013.

Mills was born on July 14, 1914, in Brentwood, Arkansas. He attended flight training in Jacksonville, Florida and basic training in Corpus Christi, Texas. He then went to Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and was assigned to the VP24 squadron. For the first two years, he flew PBYs. He then trained to drop torpedoes. He took part in the Battle of Midway and then spent three years flying up and down the Solomon Islands. During his twenty-two years of service, he earned several medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. After Mills retired from the Navy, he worked in the loan and investment industry for nineteen years. He passed away on December 13, 2013.

Arthur Lamb served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1946. He was a radioman in the Amphibians. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on September 27, 2007, Lamb talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Lamb was born on February 23, 1924 in Carmel, Indiana. He completed basic training at Great Lakes Training Station. He also received a degree in liberal arts from the University of North Carolina. Lamb passed away on October 9, 2015.

Austin Turney lived in Lawrence, Kansas, during the Second World War. Interviewed by Megan Hershiser on May 13, 2003, as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Turney talked about life in Lawrence during the war and the prisoner of war camp in town. Turney was 12 years old when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. He was a student at Lawrence Memorial High School. Turney’s half-brother, Bill, was drafted and sent to work on mosquito control in Panama for the duration of the war, while his father worked in the Department of Education at the University of Kansas. Following the war, Turney attended the University of Kansas and served in the military during the Korean War.

Interviewed by Helen Krische on June 14, 2006, Barbara (Danley) Caruthers talked about growing up during World War II. Caruthers attended Baldwin High School from 1941 to 1945. Her mother was a housewife and her father worked as a house painter. She had seven siblings, including a brother, Albert, who served in the Navy. He was stationed at in Great Lakes, Illinois. Caruthers married Dale Caruthers, who served in the Navy during the war, in 1946. In this interview, Caruthers reflected on life in Baldwin City during and after the war. She passed away on April 23, 2019.

Betty Caruthers was interviewed at the Watkins Museum of History as part of the Lawrence Remembers the World War II Years Project. Caruthers talked about working for Sunflower Ordnance Works (Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant) and her time in the United States Organizations (USO) at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, during the Second World War. She also discussed rationing, music, and leisure time during the war, and shared photographs of her uniforms. Caruthers was born on October 19, 1922, in Kansas. Following high school, she worked as a beauty operator. Her husband, Walter Caruthers, served in the Navy. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor and was on the USS Narwhal during the attack on December 7, 1941. Caruthers shared stories about her husband’s time in the Navy and their life together following the war.

During the Second World War, Betty Nicolay and her husband, Jim, raised turkeys on their farm for the war effort. Interviewed by Helen Krische as part of the Lawrence Remembers the World War II Years Project, Nicolay talked about rationing, gardening, and raising a family during the war. Nicolay was born on April 17, 1922, in Osage County, Kansas. She married Jim in 1940. She passed away on March 2, 2010.

In 2003, the Lawrence Public Library partnered with the Dole Institute of Politics and Haskell University to capture the histories of Douglas County’s World War II veterans in the Lawrence Remembers the World War II Years Project. From 2005 to 2007, the Lawrence Public Library, the Watkins Museum of History, and the Kansas State Historical Society also embarked on a similar endeavor, the Kansas Veterans of World War II Oral History Project, which was funded by the Kansas State Legislature. This collection contains many of the video recordings and more information about the interviews conducted for these projects.

An account of the resource
Beulah Duncan served in the United States Coast Guard Women’s Reserve, SPARS. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston in 2003, as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Duncan talked about her experiences during the Second World War. Duncan was born in New Mexico. She received a degree in education from the University of Kansas and became a teacher. Once the United States entered the war in 1941, she joined the SPARS and went to Officer Candidate School at Smith’s College in Massachusetts. She then worked as a coder at the Coast Guard’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. She was later assigned to work in Miami, Florida. Duncan does not state her years of service.

An account of the resource
Bill Deel worked for North American Aviation in Kansas City, Kansas, during the Second World War. Interviewed by Brian Grubbs on June 13, 2006, Deel talked about working in the defense industry and how the war affected his family. Deel was born on June 2, 1919. He attended Baldwin High School and then Baker University. Following the war, Deel owned and operated a restaurant in Baldwin City, the Corner Buffet, for twelve years. He then worked for the State of Kansas until he retired in 1982. Deel passed away on December 15, 2008.

An account of the resource
Bill F. Mayer enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943. He served as a B24-Navigator (458 bomber group, 752 squadron). Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on October 18, 2007, Mayer talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Mayer was born in Kansas City, Kansas on April 11, 1925. He attended Wyandotte High School. At 17, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps. Following the war, he received a degree in journalism from the University of Kansas. He then worked at the Lawrence Journal-World for sixty years. Mayer passed away on April 3, 2014.

Bruce A. Linton served in the United States Army (104th Infantry Division, 4th Platoon, Company C, 414th Regiment) from 1942 to 1945. Interviewed by Kristen Miller on January 14, 2003, as part of the Kansas Veterans History Project, Linton talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Linton was born on December 3, 192, in Ottawa, Illinois. He graduated high school in 1941. After enlisting in the Army, he joined the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) at the University of Illinois. He then trained at Camp Carson, Colorado, before going to Europe in May 1944. He returned home in 1945. Linton is a Purple Heart recipient. Following the war, he attended graduate school at Northwestern University and worked at the University of Kansas.

Byron Brooks enlisted in United States Navy in 1943. He served on the USS West Point, a troopship, transporting troops throughout the Atlantic and Pacific. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston in 2003 as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Brooks talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Brooks was born on April 25, 1918. Prior to the war, he attended Emporia State Teachers College. Brooks was discharged in 1946 and joined the Reserve. Also featured in the interview is Julia Brooks, Byron’s wife. They married in May 1943. She talked about her experiences while her husband served in the military. Byron Brooks passed away on February 24, 2007.

Byron Harold Gilmore served in the United States Army (Air Force) from 1941 to 1966. During World War II, he served in the 23rd Fighter Groups, 76th Fight Squadron. An account of the resource
Carl Schaake served in the United States Marine Corps in 1945. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on March 26, 2006, Schaake talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Schaake was born in Kansas on February 11, 1923. He graduated high school in 1940 and worked on his family farm. He joined the Marine Corps in 1945. He went to basic training in Parris Island, South Carolina, and then to infantry training at Camp Lejeune. Schaake was assigned to the USS Macon. Once the war ended, he came to Lawrence, Kansas. He passed away on January 20, 2011. Isabelle Schaake, Carl’s wife, is also featured in the interview. She talked about life in Lawrence during the war.

Anderson was born on December 29, 1933, in McPherson, Kansas. Her brother served in the military during the war and was a prisoner of war. Cecil Stecher enlisted in the United States Navy (Air Corps) in 1943. He served as a gunner on a torpedo bomber. Interviewed on June 12, 2007, by Deborah Pye, Stecher talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Stecher was born on June 14, 1925. At 17, he enlisted in the Navy’s V-12 training program. He attended training at several schools around the country. He was discharged on May 2, 1946. Stecher passed away on July 12, 2010.

Claudine “Scottie” Lingelbach served in the United States Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service) as a courier for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She enlisted in 1944 and attained the rank of Ensign. Interviewed on June 18, 2007, by Pattie Johnston, Lingelbach talked about her military experiences during the Second World War. Lingelbach was born in Colorado on April 8, 1922, and grew up in Topeka, Kansas. She earned a business degree from the University of Kansas before joining WAVES. She completed basic training at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Lingelbach passed away on April 3, 2018.

An account of the resource
Clyde Bysom enlisted in the United States Army (Air Force) in 1944. He served as a B29 tail gunner in the 393rd Squadron. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on October 27, 2006, Bysom talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Bysom was born in Adrian, Missouri on October 13, 1917. He grew up in Lawrence, Kansas. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1936 and then went to the University of Kansas. Bysom started building B29 parts at Boeing Aircraft in January 1942. After working there for two years, he joined the Air Force. He completed basic training at Sheppard Field in Wichita Falls, Texas. He then went to B29 School at Lowry Field in Denver, Colorado. After joining the 393rd Squadron, he was stationed in Roswell, New Mexico. Following the war, he worked at the Reuter Pipe Organ Company for twenty-five years. At the time of the interview, Bysom had been working at Hume Music in Lawrence for eleven years. He passed away on June 1, 2015.

In 2003, the Lawrence Public Library partnered with the Dole Institute of Politics and Haskell University to capture the histories of Douglas County’s World War II veterans in the Lawrence Remembers the World War II Years Project. From 2005 to 2007, the Lawrence Public Library, the Watkins Museum of History, and the Kansas State Historical Society also embarked on a similar endeavor, the Kansas Veterans of World War II Oral History Project, which was funded by the Kansas State Legislature. This collection contains many of the video recordings and more information about the interviews conducted for these projects.

Curtis William Dalton World War II Interview

An account of the resource
Curtis William Dalton served as a Corporal in the Army Signal Corps in the Pacific during the Second World War. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on August 29, 2006, Dalton talked about his experience working as a teletype maintenance technician in Hollandia, New Guinea during the war. Prior to being sent to New Guinea, Dalton was stationed at Camp Crowder, Missouri. Johnston also interviewed Cleda (Haight) Dalton. Curtis and Cleda married on June 22, 1941. Cleda reflected on life in Lawrence during the war. Following the war, Curtis was discharged and worked at the Lawrence Paper Company until he retired in 1985. He passed away on June 13, 2012. Cleda passed away on December 2, 2016.

An account of the resource
David McKee was a flight instructor in the Army Primary Flight program during the Second World War. He was also a member of the Air Corps Reserve. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on September 10, 2003, as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, McKee talked about his experiences training Army pilots during the war years. McKee was born on August 12, 1920, in St. Joe, Missouri. He graduated from the University of Kansas. He attended Aviation Cadet School and joined the Air Corps Reserve. He then attended Civilian Pilot Training and became a primary flight instructor at Mustang Field in El Reno, Oklahoma. After the flight school closed in 1945, he flew for the TWA until June 1947. McKee passed away on December 4, 2010.

Description
An account of the resource
Dayle Durkin enlisted in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) of the United States Navy in 1943. She worked in Communications as a code room watch officer in Norfolk, Virginia, until 1945. Interviewed by Helen Krische on June 15, 2006, Durkin talked about her experiences during the Second World War. Durkin was born in New York. Prior to enlisting, she worked as an editorial assistant at Woman’s Day Magazine. Following the war, she went to graduate school at Columbia University and taught English at Kansas Wesleyan University. Durkin passed away on May 15, 2010.
