    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[David McKee was a flight instructor in the Army Primary Flight program during the Second World War. He was also a member of the Air Corps Reserve. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on September 10, 2003, as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, McKee talked about his experiences training Army pilots during the war years. McKee was born on August 12, 1920, in St. Joe, Missouri. He graduated from the University of Kansas. He attended Aviation Cadet School and joined the Air Corps Reserve. He then attended Civilian Pilot Training and became a primary flight instructor at Mustang Field in El Reno, Oklahoma. After the flight school closed in 1945, he flew for the TWA until June 1947. McKee passed away on December 4, 2010.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Robert E. Mellon was drafted into the United States Army in 1942. He worked as a Combat Engineer in the Pacific theater until he was discharged in 1945. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on February 16, 2007, Mellon talked about his military experiences. Mellon was born on January 17, 1922, in Elmira, Missouri. He went to basic training at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. He took part in the invasion of the Gilbert Islands in 1943, and the Battle of Saipan in 1944. He then went to Okinawa. Following the war, Mellon went to Kansas City to find work. In 1948, he joined the Air Force. He served until retirement in 1964. Mellon passed away on March 8, 2017.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Marvin Metzger enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1942. He served in the Fox Company of the Third Marines. Interviewed by Brian Grubbs on June 27, 2007, Metzger talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Metzger was born on January 20, 1922, in Ozawkie, Kansas. He completed basic training at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA. He then worked guard duty at the submarine base on Mare Island in San Francisco Bay. In 1943, Metzger went to the Pacific. He went to New Guinea, the Solomon Islands (Guadalcanal), Bougainville, Guam, and several other islands. Following Japan’s surrender, Metzger was stationed at the Fallbrook Naval Ammunition Depot in California for about seven months before being discharged. Metzger passed away on August 22, 2015.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Segments from an interview with Beth Meyers conducted by Kaye McIntyre of Kansas Public Radio for a KPR special commemorating the thirty-year anniversary of the 1983 broadcast of The Day After, a made-for-TV movie depicting the aftermath of nuclear war, which was set and filmed primarily in Lawrence, Kansas. The KPR special aired on November 12, 2013. The interview was conducted at the Watkins Museum of History on June 28, 2012. Meyers was an extra in the film, portraying a blast survivor. She describes being covered in realistic-looking makeup. Later, extras attended a local disco while still wearing their gruesome makeup. The bombing scenes gave her nightmares for days afterward.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Galen Miller served in the United States Army during the Second World War. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston, Miller talked about his experiences in North Africa and Italy. Miller was born on January 31, 1924, in Hopkins, Missouri. His father served in World War I and worked as a mechanic. Prior to being drafted into the Army, Miller worked at the Selina Airport. He attended boot camp at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Throughout his service, he had many responsibilities, including driving, maintaining communications, camp maintenance, and collecting items from German prisoners of war. Following the war, he returned to Lawrence, Kansas. Miller passed away on May 30, 2010.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Archie Mills was a pilot in the United States Navy from 1939 to 1961. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on March 16, 2006, Mills talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Mills was born on July 14, 1914, in Brentwood, Arkansas. He attended flight training in Jacksonville, Florida and basic training in Corpus Christi, Texas. He then went to Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and was assigned to the VP24 squadron. For the first two years, he flew PBYs. He then trained to drop torpedoes. He took part in the Battle of Midway and then spent three years flying up and down the Solomon Islands. During his twenty-two years of service, he earned several medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. After Mills retired from the Navy, he worked in the loan and investment industry for nineteen years. He passed away on December 13, 2013.]]></dcterms:description>

Following the war, he joined the Reserve until 1951. Interviewed on May 11, 2003, as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Moore talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Prior to enlisting, Moore went to Washington University. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering in 1943. He trained at Fort Schuyler. In 1945, he went to Japan. Following the war, he received a PhD from Cornell University. Moore passed away on November 13, 2012.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Roy “Bud” Moore enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 (Seaman First Class). He served on the USS Guadalcanal and the Coral Sea as part of an anti-submarine tactical force. Interviewed by Brian Grubbs on September 27, 2006, Moore talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Moore was born on March 3, 1926, in Kansas City, Kansas. He enlisted in the Navy on March 25, 1943, and attended basic training in Farragut, Idaho. He spent most of his service patrolling the North and Northeast Atlantic Ocean for submarines. He was on board the USS Guadalcanal when they captured a German submarine, the U-Boat 505, which is now at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Moore was discharged in 1950. He passed away on June 5, 2009.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Russell Mosser worked as the Director of Education and Training for Boeing Airplane Co. in Wichita, Kansas. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on June 12, 2003 as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Mosser talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Mosser was born in Kansas on November 9, 1917. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1940 and a master’s degree in 1944 from the University of Kansas. Because of a health issue, the military exempted Mosser from military service. He began working with Boeing in 1942. Following the war, Mosser founded Centron Corporation, Inc., in Lawrence, Kansas. Mosser passed away on April 29, 2011.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[George Mozingo was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1945. The Japanese surrendered while he was in basic training at Sheppard Field in Texas. After training, he worked as a postal clerk in Spokane, Washington. Prior to and during the war, Mozingo worked as a farmer, a blacksmith, and for a railroad company. Because he did essential war work, he was deferred from the draft until 1945. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on August 10, 2006, Mozingo talked about working for the railroad industry and his experiences during the Second World War. Mozingo was born in Strauss, Kansas, on October 19, 1915. He passed away on November 8, 2007.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[John W. “Buck” Newsom served as a Captain in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1964. Interviewed by Kristen Miller in 2002 as part of the Kansas Veterans History Project, Newsom talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Newsom was born on July 24, 1919, in Durham, North Carolina. He attended Duke University before going to the Naval Academy in 1937. He first served on the USS Hopkins DMS-13 as Chief Engineer and Gunnery Officer. Newsom spent time in Pearl Harbor and took part in the invasion of the Solomon Islands. He then trained as a blimp pilot in 1944. He was assigned to the USS California as an air-defense officer. He took part in the Okinawa campaign and was part of the Japanese invasion fleet. After retiring from the military, he worked at Centron Productions in Lawrence, Kansas. Newsom passed away on November 26, 2015.]]></dcterms:description>
