    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Richard “Dick” Schiefelbusch served in the United States Army (Air Corps) from 1941 to 1946. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on June 28, 2007, Schiefelbusch talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Schiefelbusch was born in Kansas on July 23, 1918. He graduated high school in 1936 and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College. He enlisted in the Army the week after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. He trained as a B-24 navigator. In 1943, Germans shot down his plane over the Kiel submarine base and took him to Stalag Luft III, a prison camp. He was rescued on April 29, 1945, and discharged in 1946. After the war, Schiefelbusch received a Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He is the first G.I. to get a Phd. He then established the Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing clinic at the University of Kansas.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Richard Steffen served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1946. He served in the 489th Squadron as a clerk-typist. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on June 28, 2007, Steffen talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Steffen was born in Haviland, Kansas, on September 18, 1922. He was raised in Eudora, Kansas, and graduated high school in 1940. He then attended Lawrence Business School and began working at Sunflower Ordnance Works in 1941. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was first stationed in Midland, Texas, where he worked as the secretary to the commanding general of ACE. He then transferred to the Air Transport Command in Greenwood, Mississippi, and later went to Lunken Air Force Base in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was discharged on February 14, 1946. Following the war, Steffen worked for Charlton Insurance for seventeen years. He passed away on October 5, 2017.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Robert J. “Bob” Piller was drafted into the United States Army (395th Infantry Regiment) in 1943. He was discharged in 1945. Interviewed by Brian Grubbs on October 5, 2006, Piller talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Piller was born on November 19, 1924, in Great Bend, Kansas. Following high school graduation in 1942, he went to Notre Dame before transferring to the University of Kansas. Upon being drafted into the Army in 1943, he went to basic training at Camp Maxey in Paris, Texas. After basics, he went to Europe. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and the German attack at the Danube River on April 27, 1945. Piller received two Bronze Stars for his service. After the war, Piller went back to KU to complete his degree. He passed away on October 7, 2010.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Robert E. Mellon was drafted into the United States Army in 1942. He worked as a Combat Engineer in the Pacific theater until he was discharged in 1945. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on February 16, 2007, Mellon talked about his military experiences. Mellon was born on January 17, 1922, in Elmira, Missouri. He went to basic training at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. He took part in the invasion of the Gilbert Islands in 1943, and the Battle of Saipan in 1944. He then went to Okinawa. Following the war, Mellon went to Kansas City to find work. In 1948, he joined the Air Force. He served until retirement in 1964. Mellon passed away on March 8, 2017.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Roy “Bud” Moore enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 (Seaman First Class). He served on the USS Guadalcanal and the Coral Sea as part of an anti-submarine tactical force. Interviewed by Brian Grubbs on September 27, 2006, Moore talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Moore was born on March 3, 1926, in Kansas City, Kansas. He enlisted in the Navy on March 25, 1943, and attended basic training in Farragut, Idaho. He spent most of his service patrolling the North and Northeast Atlantic Ocean for submarines. He was on board the USS Guadalcanal when they captured a German submarine, the U-Boat 505, which is now at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Moore was discharged in 1950. He passed away on June 5, 2009.]]></dcterms:description>

Johnston was born on January 25, 1923, in Lawrence, Kansas. He served in the Home Guard for a year before he was drafted into the Army. He completed basic training in Gainesville, Texas. He went overseas to Europe in February 1945. Following V-E Day, he went to the Philippines. Johnston was discharged in February 1946. He passed away on March 5, 2010.]]></dcterms:description>

    <dcterms:description><![CDATA[Russell Mosser worked as the Director of Education and Training for Boeing Airplane Co. in Wichita, Kansas. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on June 12, 2003 as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Mosser talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Mosser was born in Kansas on November 9, 1917. He received a bachelor’s degree in 1940 and a master’s degree in 1944 from the University of Kansas. Because of a health issue, the military exempted Mosser from military service. He began working with Boeing in 1942. Following the war, Mosser founded Centron Corporation, Inc., in Lawrence, Kansas. Mosser passed away on April 29, 2011.]]></dcterms:description>

The KPR special aired on November 12, 2013. The interview was conducted at the Watkins Museum of History on June 28, 2012. Wiechert was an extra in the film. The Schubert Mortuary operated in Eudora in the early twentieth century before moving to Lawrence in 1927 under Carl Schubert, the son of founder Johann William Schubert. Warren-McElwain Mortuary, which continues to operate in Lawrence, is its successor. Volume II includes records of deceased persons prepared for burial at this mortuary from a wide range of Kansas counties, including Douglas, Johnson, Leavenworth, Dickinson, Wyandotte, Miami, Anderson, Harvey, McPherson, Cowley, and Riley. Some records also indicate places of death in Nebraska; Biloxy, Mississippi; St. Joseph, Missouri; Chicago, Illinois; Marshall, Michigan; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; New York; Colorado; and France.]]></dcterms:description>

This particular costume is Molly McIntyre&#039;s, the only Lawrence member of the Shiny Dreamers. Jacket is white with a blue sequined border and gold accents at the bottom, with large lapels lined in pink and a purple chiffon liner. Skirt is pleated with a teal petticoat underneath, with a blue sequin border lining the bottom. This poster was printed on a risograph, an alternative to silk-screen printing that allows designers to create complex, multilayered designs. Spreer became familiarized with risograph printing through a workshop with Oddities Prints in Kansas City. This poster was displayed throughout downtown Lawrence and on the University of Kansas campus.]]></dcterms:description>
