Title A name given to the resource Harold Ballew World War II Interview Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Ballew, Harold Description An account of the resource Harold Ballew served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946. Interviewed by Helen Krische on March 15, 2007, Ballew talked about his experiences during the Second World War. In this two-part interview, Ballew shared photographs of the Crusade, his company, and his father’s company, who served in World War 1. Ballew was born on February 22, 1927, in Glasgow, Missouri. He also lived in Armstrong and Fayette, Missouri. He joined the Navy upon turning 18 in 1945 and attended boot camp in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He spent his time in the Navy on the naval ship, the Crusade. Ballew’s job was to resupply the destroyer fleets in Okinawa, Japan. After 15 months on active duty, Ballew was honorably discharged on July 13, 1946, as a Seaman First Class. He received the Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal. Following his military service, Ballew moved to Baldwin City, Kansas. He passed away on August 24, 2010. He served as a rifleman in the 32nd Division. He also served as a Corporal in General MacArthur’s Honor Guard in Tokyo for nine months. Interviewed by Deborah Pye on November 10, 2006, Cartwright talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Cartwright was born in Kansas on September 9, 1924. He attended basic training at Camp Fannin in Texas. He was discharged in 1946. Cartwright passed away on May 26, 2010. Jones served in the United States Army (102nd Infantry Division) from 1943 to 1946. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on March 13, 2006, Jones talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Jones was born in Osage City, Kansas on May 31, 1925. He graduated from high school in May 1943 and was drafted into the Army in August 1943. He joined the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) and then went to infantry training at Fort Benning, Georgia. He engaged in battle in Holland and spent time in Allied-occupied Germany. Jones was discharged in 1946. He received a Purple Heart. Following his service, Jones went to the University of Kansas and graduated with a degree in business. He served in the 36th Fighter Group, 53rd Squadron. Interviewed by Helen Krische on June 21, 2006, Goss talked about his military experiences. Goss was born in Pleasanton, Kansas on January 3, 1923. During the war, he flew sixty-two missions and took part in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. Following the war, Goss worked in the insurance industry. Betty Goss, Harold’s wife, is also featured in the interview. Betty was born in Kansas on June 24, 1922. She went to Liberty Memorial High School and the University of Kansas, both in Lawrence, Kansas. She talked about life during the war. Betty passed away on March 27, 2010. Prior to enlisting, he worked as a mechanic for the Army Air Corps in Kansas as a civilian. Interviewed on June 13, 2006, by Helen Krische, Jehle talked about his experiences during the Second World War. He also discussed the prisoner of war camp in Lawrence, Kansas. Jehle was born in Lawrence on September 15, 1922. After the war, he worked at International in Lawrence. He passed away on March 13, 2018. Jones spent most of his service in the Pacific (China and Japan). After the war, he went to Oklahoma A &amp; M (Oklahoma State University). He then worked as a teacher and later as a principal. Jones passed away on October 29, 2010. After the war, he served in the Reserve until he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1973. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on August 30, 2005, Wray talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Wray was born in Kansas on September 17, 1919. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1936 and then attended the University of Kansas. He joined the Army in 1942 and went overseas to Italy in 1944. While there, he worked as an air inspector. He was then assigned to Waller Field in Trinidad. Following the war, Wray worked in the Computer Center for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He retired in 1979. Wray passed away on November 14, 2012. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on June 26, 2007, Burgert talked about her experiences during the Second World War. Burgert was born on June 21, 1918, in Brooklyn, Iowa. She graduated high school in 1935 and became a teacher. She and her sister, Elizabeth Leeper, joined the WAAC. Burgert went to Fort Des Moines for training and then spent time in Casper, Wyoming before being stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she worked as a bomb scorer. During the interview, she shared newspaper clippings, photographs from her wedding, and shows her uniform. Burgert passed away on November 12, 2012. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on March 15, 2007, Cox talked about his experiences, and how the Merchant Marine contributed to the war effort. Cox was born on August 23, 1927, in Pleasanton, Kansas. As a teenager, he worked at the Kansas City Terminal Railway Company. He joined the Merchant Marine on September 26, 1944. He received training on Santa Catalina Island. During his service, he worked on several tankers transporting oil along the West coast. Following the war, Cox married his wife, Bettie Weems, on September 26, 1947. He passed away in 2017. Title A name given to the resource Homer Frank World War II Interview Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Frank, Homer Description An account of the resource Homer Frank served in the United States Army Air Corps (155th Photo Recon Outfit) from 1942 to 1945. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on November 23, 2007, Frank talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Frank was born on March 20, 1922, in Grand Island, Nebraska. He enlisted in the Army Reserve in 1942 and was called for active duty in March 1943. He was inducted at Fort Logan in Denver, Colorado. He completed basic training at Shepherd Field, Texas, and photo school at Lowry Field, Colorado. In 1944, he went to Europe. He took the reconnaissance photographs for Patton’s Third Army. He spent time in England, France, and Germany. He also took photographs at two concentration camps, Buchenwald and Dachau. Frank shared some of his photographs from Europe during his interview. Frank passed away on January 13, 2008. Title A name given to the resource Howard Breitenbucher World War II Interview Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Breitenbucher, Howard Description An account of the resource Howard Breitenbucher was drafted into the United States Navy in 1943. He served as a Fireman First Class on the USS Lexington until 1946. Interviewed by Helen Krische on July 14, 2006, Breitenbucher talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Breitenbucher was born on April 6, 1925. He attended boot camp in Farragut, Idaho, and he is credited with participating in ten battles in the Pacific. Following the war, Breitenbucher received a degree in agriculture from Northwest Missouri State. He then worked for Farmland Industries. He passed away on August 1, 2009.
