As a whole I f e e l t h e p r e s e n t method o f
conducting t h e l i b r a r y i s e q u a l t o many l a r g e r l i b r a r i e s
I have had t h e p l e a s u r e o f v i s i t i n g and i n some c a s e s
q u i t e s u p e r i o r . Each and e v e r y one o f t h e p r e s e n t s t a f f
are e f f i c i e n t , accomodating and most p l e a s a n t t o d e a l
w i t h and one i s a l w a y s made t o f e e l welcome on each v i s i t .
I t i s my o p i n i o n w i t h r e f e r e n c e t o books,
t h a t a l a r g e r percentage o f t h e funds f o r p u r c h a s i n g books
should be spent on those o f g r e a t e r l i t e r a r y and h i s t o r i c a l
v a l u e , such a s " D i p l o m a t i c a l l y Speaking" "Out o f t h e N i g h t s
and many o t h e r s I c o u l d mention r a t h e r than so many mystery
and murder s t o r i e s . While I a p p r e c i a t e many persons l i k e
t h i s c l a s s o f l i t e r a t u r e on t h e p r e t e x t o f f r e e i n g t h e i r
minds from w o r r i e s o r b u s i n e s s r o u t i n e , 1 s t i l l f e e l t h e
number o f t h e l a t t e r c l a s s a r e q u i t e o i t o f p r o p o r t i o n t o
t h e h i g h e r t y p e suggested.

As t o newspapers, t h e K a n s a s C i t y S t a r
t o g e t h e r w i t h t h e Chicago and New York d a i l i e s a r e w e l l
chosen b u t I would suggest a wider s e l e c t i o n such a s one
o u t s t a n d i n g d a i l y from t h e West c o a s t , t h e South, e i t h e r
D a l l a s T e x a s o r New O r l e a n s and a t y p i c a l Northern

I f e e l t h e Kansas C i t y P o s t i s too much o f a s e n s a t i o n a l
paper and t h e s m a l l e r l o c a l s l i k e t h e Topeka C a p i t a l , The

are donated t o t h e l i b r a r y , should be r e p l a c e d w i t h t h e

p r i s t e and i n t e r e s t i n g .
Your r e f e r e n c e s e r v i c e h a s b u t one f a u l t ,
i t i s not a v a i l a b l e t o a l l under a l l c o n d i t i o n s and c i r cumstances. By t h i s I mean, I , a s a t a x p a y e r , see no
reason why a s i l e n t telephone should be m a i n t a i n e d a t t h e

�l i b r a r y f o r t h e e x c i u s i v e convenience o f t h e employees.
There have been many t i m e s I have wanted to c a l l the
l i b r a r y and ask f o r some i n f o r m a t i o n to use i n my work
or the s c h o o l work o f my c h i l d r e n , but c o u l d not do so
a s the phone was n e i t h e r l i s t e d nor was t h e o p e r a t o r
p e r m i t t e d to g i v e me t h e number. A l i b r a r y i s p r i m a r i l y
e s t a b l i s h e d t o render every s e r v i c e p o s s i b l e to the
c i t i z e n s o f t h a t community and r e f e r e n c e s e r v i c e should
be of paramount importance and a v a i l a b l e to a l l . I f e e l
c o n f i d e n t t h a t the p r e s e n t s t a f f would f i n d i t q u i t e
p o s s i b l e to handle any incoming r e q u e s t f o r i n f o r m a t i o n
d e s i r e d p r o v i d i n g a phone was i n s t a l l e d on the f r o n t desk.
I a l s o f e e l , t h a t the p u b l i c should be unmistakably i n f o r - —
med t h a t t h e phone was not t h u s p l a c e d f o r t h e i r conveni e n c e i n making o u t s i d e p e r s o n a l c a l l s u n l e s s some urgent
n e c e s s i t y a r o s e demanding such a c a l l to be made. I
am sure t h e r e a r e many who f e e l j u s t as I do i n t h i s
matter of telephone r e f e r e n c e s e r v i c e .
The s e r v i c e g i v e n by the l i b r a r y s t a f f i s
unimpeachable.
Two a d d i t i o n a l s u g g e s t i o n s , I f e e l worthy o f
c o n s i d e r a t i o n . C h i l d r e n , a s w e l l as a d u l t s , should be
f i r m l y a d v i s e d t h a t a l i b r a r y i s a p l a c e o f q u i e t and
should not be allowed to c a r r y on loud o r b o i s t r o u s
c o n v e r s a t i o n a t any t i m e . I t d i s t u r b e s anyone d e s i r i n g
to read o r study, r e g a r d l e s s o f how much one may t r y to
concentrate.
I have p a r t i c u l a r l y n o t i c e d t h i s on many
i n s t a n c e s and wondered why t h e s e v i o l a t e r s were not
promptly t o l d to remain q u i e t . T h i s c o u l d be done
c o u r t e o u s l y by the l i b r a r y a t t e n d a n t s o r by s i g n s
r e q u e s t i n g s i l e n c e advantageously p l a c e d about the l i b r a r y .
I would a l s o suggest t h a t s m a l l s c r a t c h pads
be kept a v a i l a b l e f o r p a t r o n s who may d e s i r e to make some
n o t e s e i t h e r from magazines, papers o r r e f e r e n c e books
they use i n the r e a d i n g rooms. One p u r p o s e l y going t h e r e
to read o r l o o k up i n f o r m a t i o n , w i l l p r o v i d e themselves
w i t h the n e c e s s a r y equipment, but f r e q u e n t l y a patron
w i l l p i c k up a magazine o r t r a d e j o u r n a l or r e f e r e n c e book
and f i n d some f a c t o r statement they would l i k e to remember
but have n o t h i n g upon which to make such n o t e s , j u s t a
sheet o r two o f s m a l l s c r a t c h pad would be most g r a t e f u l l y
a p p r e c i a t e d i n t h e s e c a s e s and ¥iOuld not i n v o l v e a l a r g e
e x p e n d i t u r e upon the p a r t o f t h e l i b r a r y .
