Language A language of the resource English Description An account of the resource In 2003, the Lawrence Public Library partnered with the Dole Institute of Politics and Haskell University to capture the histories of Douglas County’s World War II veterans in the Lawrence Remembers the World War II Years Project. From 2005 to 2007, the Lawrence Public Library, the Watkins Museum of History, and the Kansas State Historical Society also embarked on a similar endeavor, the Kansas Veterans of World War II Oral History Project, which was funded by the Kansas State Legislature. This collection contains many of the video recordings and more information about the interviews conducted for these projects. Title A name given to the resource Mabel Stoneback World War II Interview Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Stoneback, Mabel Description An account of the resource Mabel Stoneback worked in the Army Air Corps as a clerk stenographer during the Second World War. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on September 29, 2003, as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Stoneback talked about her experiences during the war. Stoneback was born in Concordia, Kansas on April 5, 1915. She was raised in Lawrence, Kansas. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1933 and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in business. She then joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 and moved to Washington, D.C. While there, she received a promotion to work for General Hap Arnold. In 1941, she transferred to Kansas City to work a civil service job in the Army Finance Office. In June 1944, she joined the Army Air Corps again and moved to California. She eventually moved back to Lawrence, married, and raised a family. Stoneback passed away on February 20, 2017.
