Lawrence Free Public Libra~;
Lawr~nce , Kansas

Report To The Board Of Directors for 1965
To The Board of Directors:
One of the most potentially significant changes made by the Laurence Public Library
duri~g 1965 was the start. of a three county oilot project to provide books and profcss~onal cons~ltant ~erv1~es to six public libraries in Douglas , Jefferson and
Atc~son Co~nt~es • F1nanc1.ng of the project rms vTi th federal funds administered by
the .,tate L~ brary • A contract uas entered into to provide these services from
"iove'llber, 1965 to June 30, 1966 . The possible effects of this project may be the
foliTiation of a three or four county library system by 1967 or 1968 . The library
system law passed in Topeka in the spring of 1965 will make possible throughout the
state numerous federations of libraries , each able to provide services to broad
areas by m~ans of taxes on areas not novr taxed for library services as well as
anticipated state aid to libraries ld thin systems .
'

•

The immediate benefits to Lal·rrence under such a system Hould come with Larrrence

serving as a library center for a multi- county library area . Its book collections
and its professional services would be increased considerably, and it would serve as
a major information center for a broad area .
The most important changes vri thin the library in 1965 \lere in the areas of service .
A new circulation system was installed in the Adult Department in April , 1965 . This
~s

designed to make work operations more efficient in view of the large increase in
oook circulation over the past several years . As a result of the time saved from
routine duties such as overdue procedures , more staff time r~as made available for
orLr~ri ser, nces to patrons . The new or increased services include:

1 -Home deliver,y service to shut-ins .

By the end of 1965 this direct book

service to the aged or infirn was being brought to
lh!rT patron:; will be added as the service gro\'TS .

24 persons in

Lav~ence .

2 - By mean 3 of a teletype network spread throughout six main ~b:aries in

Kansas , we nm~ have interlibrary loan access to over one m.J.llion books. In
the first month of its operation in 1965, LaHrence borro\·7ed 121 books for
loan to our patrons . In months since , we have borrovred an average of 100120 books each month . Rese r ves are nm-1 being filled for patrons in a
matter of days rather than ~eeks in most case:; .

3 - The most important internal ::;ervice added in 1965 •,ras the establishm~mt of

a seoarate reference advisor desk . Al~hough ma?ned only on a part-tJ.me

·\-ajar change in ~he city schools in the past year oromises to have a bearinf7. on
the library' 5 serv1.ce to studenbs • This is the program to stren2then school llbrary
facilities . In the p~st , La\-tr~nce Public Library has prl)vided llmited service to
the schools through d:trect classroom loans of books to teachers . As school$ increase
the numbers of books in their libraries this service to teachers \dll naturally
decrease . Since the number of school l~ans has figurad at bett-~een 15, 000-20,000 a
~ar, the change may have noticeable i~~ediate effects on circulation of children ' s
books . In the long run, hmvever, good school libraries t-rill complement public
librarJ service to children, ~ot replace it . Experience in other areas indicates
that good school libraries staffed by experienced librarians , develop public library
users among pupils at an ~arly age , \-Iho continue to use public library facilities as
they grow older • 1
A - 3jor purchase during 1965 r:as a used International Harvester Truck to replace the
old bookmobile . This vas fitted with shelves and used for the 1965 Summer Reading
Prograw . In adiition, it is currently being used to orovide rotating book collec~
tions to the libraries being served by the pi l ot project mentioned earlier .
i'he Children 1 s department again conducted a successful Summer Readin& Program .

~total of 1, 998 children signed up for the program .

Of these , 1 , 529 completed the
required reading and became eligibl e fo r a re~ding certificate or reading seal .

P.as the visit of the 300 lb . turtle from the Tope lea Zoo . Atcendance reached 175
