~g~ pr~paring for the eventual storage of books for which space was no longer
3Va~lable . The addition of approximately 20 units of shelving in early 1969 marked
the final alilOunt of expansion which could be obtained for neto~ books. In the Fall
of 1959 books uare being boxed for eventual storage in the City \-later Plant. By
e~ly 1970 so~e 1,500 books ware so stored. From 1970 on, until new space is
found , some u,ooo-5,000 books per year will need to be placed in storage •
•

Library usage increased in some areas during the year, while decreasing in others.
P. total increase of 6,304 books circulated was reported in 1~69 while at the

Pl~S '~ere laid late in 1969 to install a deposit collection of approximately
6C0 childrens books at the East Lawrence Community Center to begin early in
1970. Such a collection is now in the Ballard Center. These books are rotated
on a monthly basis .

An inventor,r and inspection of. the Library' s LP record collection was begun

in the. Summer • Of the col~e~t1on of some 2, 300 r ecords , approximately 700
~ere Wlthdrawn due. to cond1t1on or being missing in the inventory. Since many
of these had been 1n the collection for 8 or 9 years , indications are that
our r ecords hold up l·7ell under constant circul at ion . A sale of the withdrawn
records was held and over ·~100 was r eceived . We are now in the process of
replacing many of the records that were withdrawn .
1969 began the first full year in which Lawrenc e served as reference and loan
cE~nter for the Northeast Kansas Libr aries System.
During that period some
1),271 requests lvere handled by the r efer ence staff . Those items not filled
were sent on to the statewide loan network known as laC . For this service,
~e Lawrence Libr ary received $25, 800 for staff and the purchase of books. In
ad~tion 1 through the state loan netwo r k and a r eciprocal agree~ent with Johnson
~unty Library, some 9,000 books were requested for Lawrence p3trons during the
~ar . As a member of the system, Lawrence , al ong with some 30 other libraries
in the area, agr eed to ope'n its doors to all citizens in the system- wide area
~thout char ge .
In addition to persons in Douglas and other counties now being
able to use the library wi. thout fees, Lawrence residents now have access ~d. thout
charge to such libraries as Johnson County, Ottawa and Topeka .

Three r.1ajor personnel changes during the year included the retirement of Hrs. Weeks,
our bookkeeper and secretary for 8 years; Hrs . Halfen, our Children 1 s Librarian
for 2 years and }!rs . Meyer, head of the Circulation Department . Karen Halczak
replaced t1rs . ~lcaeks in June of 1969; Susan Fr ampton became Head o~ Circulation
~July, and Mary Parets~ has been acting Children ' s Libr arian s1nce September •
