INDEX OF DEATHS AND BIRTHS IN DAILY NEWSPAPERS OF
LAWRENCE, DOUGLAS COUNTY, KANSAS, 1864-1872
INTRODUCTION

This index begins with newspapers just before 1864 (29 November 1863)
because deaths in Douglas County in earlier newspapers, 1855-63, are
already abstracted in the two volumes of Complete Tombstone Census of
Douglas County, Kansas, published by the Douglas County Genealogical
Society. Deaths in newspapers of 1855-60 are covered in volume 1 (1987),
pages 254-59, and deaths reported in 1861-63 are covered in volume 2 (1989),
pages 420-27. Births are not included in the Tombstone Census, but we
de<;:ided to include births in this index.
About 1,000 entries, by far the greatest number of them deaths, are listed in
the present index of deaths and births. For newspapers of March 1873
through July 1880 we plan to publish an index of all genealogically useful
information.
WHAT NEWSPAPERS ARE INDEXED?

The Lawrence daily newspapers available in the Lawrence Public Library are
indexed. These are the Kansas Daily Tribune 29 November 1863 through 10
August 1869 (10 spools of microfilm), the Republican Daily Journal 11 August
1869 through 3 March 1872 (6 spools), and the Kansas Daily Tribune 5 March
1872 through 4 March 1873 (1 spool and parts of 2 others).
WHAT KINDS OF ITEMS ARE INDEXED?

We indexed each item in the news and letters columns that specified or
indicated a death or birth that may have occurred in Douglas County,
and/ or the person mimed was a resident or former resident of Douglas
County or a relative of a resident of Douglas County, for which the news
item indicated an exact or approXimate date of the occurrence. Thus, one
person's death may be indexed more than once; for example, the death
notice, the notice or report bf the funeral, and a resolution by the deceased's
lodge. An indexed news article may report that the person died one year
before, or 10 or more years before. A researcher should read every item
indexed for an individual's death, as the name may have peen printed
differently or different relatibnships or other details may have been reported.
An indexed birth may have been reported soon after the occasion, or
indicated by report of a birthday celebration (it could have been the 8th or
82nd birthday).

1

WHAT PARTS OF THE NEWSPAPERS ARE NOT INDEXED?

Legal notices and commercial advertisements are not indexed.
WHAT IS THE INFORMATION CONTENT OF ITEMS INDEXED?

Lawrence newspapers of the 1860s and 1870s generally did not present full
obituaries as modern newspapers do. Usually only the person's name and
day of death are given, sometimes the name of a surviving spouse, but rarely
the deceased's age, birth place, or other details. Names of infants are usually
not given, but parents' names instead, in both death and birth notices. An
indication of a birth was usually written in an obscure style, with no caption,
as for example, "An important event has transpired in the family of our
friend Mr. Menet, the city clerk. The event was a pleasant one and consisted
in the appearance into the family of a little daughter." Sometimes an
indication of a death is indirect, as "We were shown yesterday by Dr.
Abdelal, the small shot which caused the death of Mr. Moore." Death notices
printed with no name attached are indexed preceding the "A" names.
The Lawrence newspapers reported some news of Douglas County people
outside Lawrence, but much less than for Lawrence people.
ARE PAGE NUMBERS PRINTED ON THE NEWSPAPERS?

The newspapers generally had four pages, and page numbers were not
printed. To aid the user, in most cases we have listed a page number; that is,
the first, second, third, or fourth page of the order in which they appear on
the microfilm. Sometimes a second copy of a page is on the microfilm, in
which case we did not count the second copy in our page numbering.
DID THE NEWSPAPERS REPORT ALL THE DEATHS AND BIRTHS THAT
OCCURRED?

Occasionally a newspaper would have a "mortuary report" showing the
number of deaths during a period of a few weeks or months. Comparison of
the number of deaths reported by name with the count in the mortuary
report indicate,S that about one-fourth to less than one-half of the deaths
were reported in the newspapers. No comparison is available for births, but
we suspect that a very small proportion of the actual births were reported in
the newspapers.

2

BOW CAN COPIES OF THE NEWSPAPERS BE SEEN?

Microfilms of the newspapers indexed are in the Lawrence Public Library
and the library of the Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka. Those
through 3 March 1872 are also in the Kansas Collection in Spencer Research
Library, University of Kansas. Those in the State Historical Society are
available on interlibrary loan.
CAN I HAVE SOMEONE MARE COPIES OF INDEXED ITEMS FOR ME?

Upon written request with payment in advance and clear specification of
items wanted, the Douglas County Genealogical Society will make copies of
indexed items. The cost in 1999, subject to change in the future, is $5 for the
first item and $1 for each additional item in the same request. Be aware that
additional items for the same person's death or birth mayor may not contain
additional information. Our address is P.O. Box 3664, Lawrence, KS 660460664.
IS THE INDEX COMPLETE AND PERFECT IN EVERY RESPECT?

We have done our best, but there may be some mistakes and omissions. The
index has been proofread with the work sheets, but the work sheets have not
been checked against the newspapers. If you don't find an item on the page
listed, look at the other pages in the same issue. If still not found, look at the
previous and following issues. We indexed according to the spelling given in
the newspaper, so look for possible alternate spellings or misspellings
including typographic errors. For example, if looking for a HANNOLD also
look for HONNOLD.
WHAT DID ONE NEWSPAPER HAVE TO SAY ABOUT TBE VALUE OF
PRESERVING NEWSPAPERS?

A newspaper slightly later than the period indexed (Daily Kansas Tribune, 22
November 1874) commented, "The files of our city papers constitute
extremely valuable archives, which increase in worth as time rolls on and
detailed data of current events in the past become scarcer. Unlike the parent
states, Kansas was fortunate in having a vigorous press, contemporaneously
with her first settlement, and consequently all important events of her
exceptionally eventful history is of record on the pages of her papers. To
preserve in the safest and most convenient form complete files of their
papers should be the care of our commonwealth and our cities. It occurs to
us that here in Lawrence we have a most convenient means through which
this may be assured in the future. Our city library is furnished day by day

3

and week by week with the issues of our local press. Let the city council
authorize and instruct the city librarian to carefully preserve the files in her
care and from time to time have them bound in a convenient shape for
preservation. Their constantly enhancing value would amply repay the
trifling expense.
II

The newspaper said nothing about the value of indexes, possibly because
that would have been asking too much at that time.
