BY GEORGE W. WHITE
CLINTON, DOUGLAS COUNTY, KANSAS.
I was born in Anderson County, Texas, July 5th, 1844. I lived there
until October 1845. In October we started back to Missouri. Our conveyance
was ox teams. We got back to Morgan County, Missouri and my father bought
the same farm back that we sold before we went to Texas.
We lived there until 1850, in 1850 we moved north six miles and rented
a farm stayed there until 1852, moved then to Case County, Missouri. We
lived there until the spring of 1854, and moved from there to Douglas County,
Kansas, near Clinton.
I was at home when the 1856 troubles came up. I stayed at home and
took care of the home and stock while father and my brothers were out in
the war. My oldest brother got his arm shot off at what was known as the
Titus Battle in 56. In 1860 the dry season came on. Me and my father and
family had to go back to Missouri to get feed for our stock. We went back
to Morgan County, Missouri, and bought feed there near Sedalia, Missouri,
and wintered there. I drove teams and worked on the railroad most of the
winter. In the spring, father, mother and myself came home the first of
May and went farming. I worked the farm that year and the Civil War come
up. In 1862 I joined the Company of the State Militia and served in that,
during the war but drove government teams most of the time. In 1863 I was
at home the day of Quantrill's Raid. There were four of us at my father's
house when Amos Spittler drove up to our gate at sunrise in the morning
and told us that a Secession at Lawrence was burning the town and killing
everybody.
My mother was making a fire to get breakfast at the time. I heard him
ho110a and got up as soon as I could and called the other boys. I went
down and saw Spittler and he told me the circumstances. The other boys
came down as soon as they could and we got our horses and as soon as we ate
our breakfast we started for Lawrence. As we came over the University Hill,
We saw Quantrill's Band down on the Wakarusa bottom and crossing the Wakarusa; they had set a house afire down there. They crossed the Wakarusa at
what was known as the B1antan bridge, now the Eggert bridge, then we came
on down to Lawrence. We went north on Mass. St. as far as 8th St; we then
turned east. We saw one or two persons lying in the street north of us.
It was so hot we could hardly get to them. We then went east around to the
old Durfey-Hotel and we found a family there by the name of Stone. We had
two cousins working there at the time.
Stone told uS that they had crossed the river. We went down to the
river bank and ho11oad across to them and they answered that they were all
right. We came back to the Hotel and Quantrill's men had shot the old man
Stone in the house. We went in to see him and he was shot in the breast.
We then got on our horses and went after Quantrill. We got out in the
South part of town where thirty-two recruits had been killed. On a little
farther south we met up with a bunch of boys and men that had one of
Quantri11',s men in custody whose name was Skaggs. A man by the name of Dr.
Honne11 had him by the arm. Austin White my cousin asked Honne11 what he
was going to do with him. He said they were going to kill him but he was

52

going to take him up town and turn him over to the Civil Authorities.
White said "Stand back, I'll turn him over". He and George Black drew
their revolvers and fired two shots at him striking him in the breast.
Skaggs whirled and ran east about forty feet turned around and threw
up his hands, as he threw up his hands Frank White Turkey a Delaware
Indian shot him with his bow and arrow. The arrow took effect in the left
corner of his mouth. He went over to him and White Turkey got off his
horse and tried to pullout his arrow but could not. He then set his
foot on his forehead and pulled his arrow out. Skaggs had on a new pair
of boots. White Turkey pulled them off and wanted Austin White to take
them. White said "No I do not want them they are too big for you or me
you can have them". White Turkey said "No you take them your boots". White
said "No I do not want them you take them'.'. White Turkey said "Alright I
will take them then". He went to his pony and turned around and started
after Quantrill. When we got down on the Wakarusa bottom James H. Lane
and several others caught up with us. When we got to the top of the hill
south of the Wakarusa we saw two men west of the road ,setting a house afire.
When they saw us they came into the road about two hundred feet ahead of
us. We fired several shots at them but failed to get any of them. We
followed them on south past Baldwin City and caught up with them a few
miles further, then they got away from us again. Then Major Plum and his
men came in sight but they did not want to seem to catch up with them.
James Lane went back and talked with Plum but we went on for several
miles but finally caught up Hith them. We had a fight with them and fired
several shots both ways, we got one horse but did not get any men. When
the soldiers carne up pretty close they whirled and ran and got away from
us. That was the, last fight we had with them.
We followed them on for ten or twelve miles and when it came sundown
then we turned and went home. We got home that night about two o'clock.
Then later on in the fall I went to driving government teams again and drove
on until cold w~ather. I went home and stayed until spring and in the
spring I went to driving government teams for the 9th Kansas Regiment
the third day of May we left Lawrence for Little Rock Arkansas that was
the spring of 1864. We traveled allover Missouri and Arkansas at last was
discharged at Fort Smith, Arkansas in July. Then went horne and later on
hired to drive government teams again, from Leavenworth to Fort Scott and
back.

-

,

At the time of Price's raid I was at Fort Leavenworth at midnight
we were ordered to Kansas City. We went down to the Commissary house and
loaded our wagons with provisions for the soldiers and started for Kansas
City. We drove there as quick as we could and got there about two o'clock
in the afternoon. I had my horse and saddle with me to come home but they
put me on picket duty that night and stayed therefor two days, and nights,
and was then ord'ered back to Fort Leavenworth. I then got my pay and went
horne. Later on I hired to drive teams for a man'by the name of'Kitchen.
Went to Fort Dodge and back to Kansas City was discharged and came home.
That was the fall of 1864. I then got my discharge from the Militia. I
am the only man living that followed Quantrill out of the County.

******
"KANSAS" --- In popular estimation, Kansas is classified as an exclusively
agricultural and pastorial. It has harvested the largest wheat crop ever
gathered in any State, and will strive this year to break its own record.
In corn, fruit and small grains, computation and measurement have been
abandoned as superfluous and impracticable. But these are only fragments of
its mineral resources.
To be a denizen of a State that surpasses all other communities as Niagara
excels all other cataracts, as the sun transcends all other luminaries, imposes
obligations that render levity impossible.

HOW ABOUT SENDING IN YOUR NAME NOW FOR A MEMBERSHIP IN THE DOUGLAS COUNTY
GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY.

..

* **** *
Because a scared young officer in the U.S. Corps of Engineers had to
preside at a meeting in New Bedford, Mass., in 1863, a well-known book came
intq existence. To prepare for the ordeal, he made a lot of notes and outlines. He later had these notes published in book form.
, The book, Robert's Rules of Order, is now a standard reference for
parliamentarians.
