From Newspaper clippings found at Spencer Research Library, University of
Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas:
Call # RH, H86, Vol. 8
Mention was made of how the family name of Estelle ISE of Lawrence,
Kansas came to be in its present form. Apparently the original family name
was ISENMENGER. It was shortened when a civil war recruiting officer told
Estelle's grandfather that the name was too long. (Estelle ISE was the
wife of Admiral Felix GYGAX of Twin Creek.)

Letter from Kansas
Published iin The Kansas Herald.of.Freedom~- An Independent Week~y Newspaper DevQlte'(fto Freedom, and the Interests of the Kansas TerrItory, by
G.W.• Brown & Co., Wakarusa, Kansas Territory. Number 1, Volume 1, Saturday,
Octo,ber 21, 1854.
Since the publication of my former letters: in the E:a:. I have rec'ei ved
hundreds of letters from al1~' parts of the country, enquIrl,ng about Kansas.
Although wishing to impart all the information i'n my power', yet were I to
devo,te all my time to' letter wri ting, one half at least would go unanswered.
A few put me under personal obligations so that I am at least obliged to
wd te to them., Others who letters may be unanswered win from thi s learn
the reason why. One wants to know '-if the lands here are subject to p:eemption""? another "'if we get them for nothing or have to pay twenty-fIve
cents an acre:, the cost of survey", etc.--Things'that are known all over
the States weeks befo,re we can possibly' know them here, as we are fifty
miles,: in Indian country, and the same distance from Westport, Missouri,our
nearest postoffice. Another wants to know t·\'lhat kind of winters we have
here, and what kind of summers?"' forgetting that I am Just from Ohio, and
have no't resided in Kansas, yet three' weeks:. Another wants to know ''-i'f we
have the ague here, and if so'o whether as bad as in I1linois?n;"-a place I
never set foot upon--and so on ad infinJ:tum. But hundreds of questions
are asked, and so far as 1 possibly can,;"I wish to give one general answer.
The lands purchased' of the Indians embrace nearly fifteen millions of acres;
of this, all except about eight hundred acres belonging to the Weas, south
of the Kansas river and Iowas, north of said river, are subject to pre-emption. As to the Homestead bill, we know nothi'ng of it here, whether passed:
or not, or whether it would apply to the Kans'as rands or not., I think the
Shawnee lands, south of the Kansas river will be the first settled;: they
appear to be settling fastest between the Kansas and Wakarusa rivers, on
the California road.
To reach here, a person coming by the Missouri river should 11and at
Kansas, cross the Shawnee Reserve', thirty miles' to Wakarusa ferry and you
come to' the promised land. As to holding claims here, I refer the reader'
to theConsti tution of the' Mutual Settlers t, Association, which of course
you will publish. These laws will be respected, and justice adminfstered
here as peac,eably as iin the States. Claims: are, however, frequently sold
by settlers.
l' think this Terri tory is well watered';; springs exist in abundance';
prairie could not be richer;, timber may be scarce in places, yet limestone'
and coal exist in abundance. IOuI' tiinber consis·ts principally of walnut,
oak, cotton-\'lood, blue ash, etc'. SOil of all kinds, from clay loam to' rich,
sandy' soil;; good clay, for brick or potter's ware, can be found. I am at:
least five hundred feet above the Kansas river, and only three! mnes fl'om;
1:t, on the richest of soil. A pleasant breeze greets us from the so'uthwest;
to inhale a draught of it is alinost equal to a drink of water. I am satisfied,that the country must be healthy, much more so than iin Ohio.--Possibly
some may have the ague, along the river, or other streams on the low lands.
I think no' difficul ty would be experienced iit securing a location for 8'
tt>colony of any size", where water, timber and stone exist sufficient for
all purposes; yet to secure a place now, emigrants wou'l'd have to go farther
west. The Kansas river i:s nearly as large as the Mi;ssouri. Steambo'ats'

94

have been up one hundred and seventy-five miles, to Fort Riley, and I think
with small boats it may' run that high the year around. There are good water
pri v~leges in the Terri tory~ Horses, oxen, cows, an~ in fact, all kinds of
stock are high-':'cows from $25 to $40; oxen, from $75 to $100 per yo'ke; good
horses, from $100 to $1:50 per head. An ·kinds of furniture high--at least
one'-thfrd higher than fin Ohio. Bacon $fe, per lb. Flour, $3'.50 per 100 lbs.
Store goods a shade higher than in Ohio.' I speak o'f the Kansas market in
Missouri.
No,twi thstanding the threats and browr!:':beati'ng of the Missourians,. the
greatest propo,rtion of the settlers here as' Northern peopre--nine-te'~i'trhs'
of the balance honest SOutherners:, who are coming as they say, to get rid
of s1'avery. 1 was much mi'staken in the character of the Missouri ans'., A
few fanatics, who were: resolved to ext'end slavery' at an hazard's', seem: fo·r
the time being to give tone to the whole peopre;' but a oetteracquaintance'
convinces'me that the majori ty of the people condemned the violent resolu'tions p'assed at W¢s'tport and other places. But the die is c'ast., Westport
wnl be another ALT~~. B'iI.'ood 1's in her heart.. Hundreds wtn shun here;:
and Kansas" only' four miles further', wiTl reap the frui'ts' of he'r' ,'treason.
nOo you a,app,rehend any serious difficulty with slaveholders?" is frequently asked •. 1 answer, no, although they have boasted and threatened
much, ill. thev .. .m.~!!.Ql, fools, and well Rnow the shedding of Northern blood!
to sustain sravery here, would end only with slavery itself.. Northern men
need not fear.;' a1'1 they' have to do i;s to be true to themselves, and not
coward-like', knucfde to the demands~ of these sl aveholders~. and padlock
their lips;, and tt-wai t til: the proper time t'o meet this' question"'.. Now is
the proper ti'me--now'i"s the time that the sliaveholders are movingneaven
and earth to establish slavery here;: and now is the tiine,. like men, we
should meet them, and not Hke cowards', cry', "Hush, be quiet', don It agi'tate'
the questiion ~; wai t ti 1 we are stronger .. ',IIOne explanati:on is necessary here;, in speaking of missions" in my llast
]} did not make the proper distinction., My remarks' were true as to Johnson's
mission;; but since I have become acquainted with Or~ Stin, a true man, who
also h~s a mission here~
One word to newspapers which copy my articles·... Do not put words into
my mouth which I never utter.. Copy exact from the' ERA, or not at aH. Much
i,njusti'ce was; done me by a former artic'le by a' portion of the eastern: press'.
Besides, those who copy my' sayings' wiill db me a favor' by' complYing with the'
m~ourtesies of the press.~
One word to emigrants •. Those who have money can do welil here.. lands
which can be got for nothing now, by paying a year' hence Government price,
I honestly thfnk in two years: wi':!'l be worth $25: to $30' an acre. No new
country ever settled one-fifti·eth part as fast as Kansas is now settlfng.
Emi~rants; arri ving in scores;' tents are stret'ched al:l over the prairies;;
cablns ..are going up f? alil directfons., Labor iiS plenty •. A" man, though
?oor, 1f he c'an and Wlll work, Can do well! here'. A'man with only a teami is:
lndependent.. BUt to those who have no' means, can tt nor won't work, Kansas
fs no place for you., Emigrants must expect to meet some hard'ships'~.. We'

95

have no ffne houses to receive you in;: everything is i'nconvenil,ent yet;;
settlers are generally of be right kind, with pioneer hearts. SOciety:
i;s good;; we are all sociable and accommodating, and the person who now
has the wBl, and meets these difficulties" and gets' hi's cho,ice of the
lands;, wim never regret it. Where rin Ohio todayl, with my knowledge of
Kansas" I should lose no time coming back here', pitching my- tent" bui'ldfng a cabin,. and preparing for living •. Understand me, I urge nO' one to
come; fo'r, as in ciH?new countries', many- chicken-hearted ones wil'l get
homesick and leave. But if you have made up your mind, and are coming,
now i~ the time. The sooner here, the better-for you.
I am,. truly", yours',>
