President's Message
: I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those officers,
committees, and members who have worked diligently to make last year a
suc~ess. Special thanks should go to retiring officers Pauline Elniff libtarian, Mary Jamison - editor of the Pioneer, an& Judy Sweets - secretary and researcher. Many thanks for your many hours of hard work for
thei Society.
'
I
i This is a new year with many tasks unfinished. Grace Embers, editor
of the Pioneer welcomes material'for possible publication in the Pioneer.
If you have material on Douglas County history, your family in Douglas
Cou~ty, diaries, Bible records, school records, etc., please get them to
Gra~e. We especially invite our out of state members to contribute in
this way for the mutual benefit of everyone.
I

I Grace also needs typists, copiers and indexers., "I don't know how"
is bot a good enough excuse, as none of us knew how until we did it.

! Jean Snedeger, and her committee have been worki~g :on reprinting several
Lawrence City Directories so they will be available for purchase by anyone
needing them. They have begun updating the county cemetery records for
publication in the near future. Please call her if you can help.
I

,

\

i The

general opinion is we have had' helpful, interesting and instructive
speakers at our monthly meetings. Thanks to aTl who, took the time and effort
to come to our meetings and instruct us in their specialities. If you have
a special topic for a future program, let us know. :
I

,

Sincerely,

;

: The Preemption Act was passed in 1841 by the U. S;. Congress in response
totpe demands of the Western states that squatters b:e allowed to preempt
lands. Pioneers often settled on public lands before they could be surveyed
and kuctioned by the government. At first these claitns were not recognized,
but ;in the 1830's temporary preemption laws were passed by Congress. Opposition: to preemption came from Eastern states where it was seen as a threat to
their labor supply. A permanent preemption act was passed only after the
East¢rn states had been placated by the principle of distribution (i. e., the
proceeds of the government land sales would be distributed among the states
according to population). Distribution was discarded in 1842, but the preemption principle survived. The act of 1841 permitted settlers to locate a
clai* of 160 acres and after about fourteen months of residence to purchase
it f1jom the government before public sale for as low as $1.25 an acre. After
the passage (1862) of the HOMESTEAD ACT, the value of ,preemption for bona
fide !settlers declined, and the practice more and more became a tool for
spec~lators.
Congress repealed the Preemption Act in;189l.

NEW ACQUISITION
The library of the Douglas County Genealogical Society
has acquired 45 issues of the

C~nn~cticut

Nutmegger, the quarterly

journal of the Connecticut Society 6f Genealogists.

The rapidly

growing Connecticut organization was founded in 1968 and alrea9y
has more than 5,000 members.

These are from every state in the

Union and from many foreign countries; the journal thus becomes
more than a regional publication.
In the Connecticut Nutmegger can be found:
A continuing series: Connecticut Births Before 1730.
A continuing series: Connecticut Marriages Before 1750 •.
A continuing series: Connecticut

Genealogical Queries.

These are well-indexed, are not

l~ited to Connecticut families but are preponderantly New England,
Ne~ York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, and are notable for their

spe:cificity.

They perhaps represent the largest body of queries,

except for the Genealogical Helper, in any

ge~ealogical

publication.

The submitter of each query is identified by his special
Nutmegger number. A list of these members and their addresses is updated
every two months.

Anyone wishing to correspond with an individual regarding

a query can contacF Dr. Thomas Go-r-to;~-;~i ~-8&543_3 'fQr_th~_c_ur.r_ent_addr.ess_Qfl
the submitter.

THE SWEDISH CEMETERY
The Swedish Cemetery (also known as the Johnson Cemetery) is located
on'a wooded hillside about one mile north of Lone Star, Kansas, on land
(called the Adams Campus) now owned by the Kansas University Endowment
Association. It is a small cemetery consisting of about sixteen graves
enclosed bya rock fence. According to information compiled, by Ada Lindell
for Will Hastie's Record of Cemeteries of Douglas County, Kansas, the land
for the cemetery was donated by Mr. Lars JOHNSON who came to America from
Sweden in 1855.
"The first one to be buried in this cemetery was Mr. BERGMAN, who was
born in Sweden, and died some time ,between the years 1855-1860. We have
no record of who he was, except that he was a bachelor, a farmer and stone,
mason."
She further states that "the next were two men, father and son.
J.S. EKMAN, born in Sweden May 31, 1816, died 1855; his son, Carl EKMAN,
born in Sweden, was killed in 1863 during Quantre11's raid. These two
stones are of sandstone and, the 1ettering'and dates are almost gone."
The following graves are located on the east side of the cemetery in
Row 1:
Sidney F. HELLSTROM, 1871-1910
Elva HELLSTROM, 1875-1904
Otto HELLSTROM, 1884-1897
Row 2:
Oscar HELLSTROM, 1842-1910, born in Sweden*
Frans M. HELLSTROM, 1816-1884, born in Sweden*
Clara G. HELLSTROM, 1820-1894, born in Sweden*
Row '3:
Carl E. BJORKLUND, Nov. 7, 1824-Dec. 24, 1895, born inSweden*
Helena C. BJORKLUND - Wife, July 19, 1815-0ct. 3, 1893, born in Sweden*
Johanna E. JOHNSON, 1810-1885, born in Sweden*
Lars JOHNSON, 1811-1885, born in Sweden*
Row 4:
G.L. JOHNSON, 1849-1901
2 more stones which are unreadable
G.L. JOHNSON was not listed in Hastie's book, but two others were for
whom there were no stones:
Gustave HELLSTROM, born in Sweden 1846, died 1905
Charles John AHLSTROM, born in Sweden 1816, died 1912
On the ,hillside northwest of this cemetery and across the stream lies
the remains of the stone house and corncrib of the Hellstrom family
£irthp1ace information was given by Ada Lindell in Will Hastie's Record
of Cemeteries of Douglas County, 'Kansas.
Contributed by "Jane Wiggins and Dorothy Wiggins.

C.H. BROWNE
16 Cabins erected and a Steam Sawmill commenced.
Copied by Jean Snedeger

*******
From the Lawrence Republican Weekly, Thursday, July 9, 1857, pg. 3:
TO THE PEOPLE OF LAWRENCE
-- In taking the Census of Lawrence, many persons were absent, and it
has been impossible in many cases to get an accurate list; It was also
impossible to see a great many and give them an opportunity to sign the
petition for the FREE-STATE CONSTITUTION.
The Census returns and petition will be kept at my office until the
10th inst. I hope all persons omitted on Census returns, or who wish to
sign the Free-State petition will call and do so immediately. One sheet
of Census returns has been lost, it is hoped the finder will return the
same to my office.----- - - July 9, 1857
