PRESIDENT'S LETTER
Another half year has slipped by with many excellent accomplishments
and many tasks to keep us busy for some time to come.
This is the second issue of the Pioneer for 82-83. The new cover and
other features have been well received. A big thanks to Editor Grace Embers
and her many helpers.
We could be facing a financial problem in the near future as postage
has doubled to send the Pioneers out of town and the cost of printing and
supplies is.up. We would appreciate hearing from our out of state members
to help us decide if we should mail Pioneers only twice per year, make
them smaller, charge a surcharge for mailing or come up with a better solution.
Ilah Derrick has been busy answering genealogical problems sent in by
people from the west coast to the east coast and even Europe. Thanks for
your work, Ilah.
A lot of credit for our good attendance at our meetings go to the
Calling Committee headed by Dorothy Clarke with Irma Kidwell and Kathryn
Bunton. Thanks for your faithful work.
Wilma Vaughn, our librarian and her committee have been busy cataloguing
the exchange quar.terlies and taking care of our Library. The Friends of the
Lawrence Pulibc Library donated a set of Adjutant Generals records of the
Civil War ·for Illinois. Recent gifts of several volumes of the Connecticut
Nutmegger and NEH & GR by Thomas and Catherine Gorton are greatly appreciated.
Fay Talley is the Hospitality Chairman. Thanks for arranging with many
generous members who make our meetings more enjoyable by furnishing refreshments.
Jane Wiggins, our secretary and Dorothy Wiggins, our treasurer, have spent
many hours writing letters, typing, taking care of memberships, collecting
. dues and filing members'five generation charts, etc. Many thanks to both of
you.
Last but not least, many thanks to Jean Snedeger, our vice-president
for.all the organizing, copying, arranging and innumerable details she has·
taken care of.
. This Pioneer is being distributed at our December meeting which is a
Christmas pot luck dinner held at the South Park Reacreational Center. I
personally want to wish every member and friend a Happy Holiday and a Happy
and Prosperous New Year.

I

Sincerely;

iDonald Vaughn, President

Annual Meeting in February (usually during the third week).
The exact date and time will be announced.

The Society began as a committee in March of 1973 for the purpose of
saving the J.C. Steele House in Bloomington (about 1 mile east of Clinton)
from destruction by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They succeeded in
getting the Steele House named to the National Register of Historic Sites
in November 1973. The committee was incorporated as a Society on March 17,
1977 in order to maintain and operate the Steele House as a museum, and to
preserve the history of the area.
The Corps of Engineers reversed their decision on September 14, 1977,
and the Steele House was dismantled with the agreement to build a small
museum with a courtyard and stage for special programs, to be directed,
staffed and maintained by the Clinton Lake Historical Society, Inc. The
Society is making plans for the grand opening of the Bloomington Museum
on May 1, 1983.
The Society has two publications for sale: Soil of Our Sou1s.by Martha
Parker and Betty Laird, $5.95 plus $1. 00 postage; and Historical Map of

OLD.ER HOMES IN LA.TtTRENCE ARE NUMEROUS

From an article by Mrs. Ivan D. Rowe in the Lawrence Daily
Journal \'10 rId , Thursday, December 8, 1960.
The first house· in Lawrence lias builtin 1854.. A log cabin
about: 18 by 24 feet erected by Clark Stearns from Missouri. The
act of organizing the territories of Kansas and Nebraska passed' .
Congress" May 30, 1854, and wi thin a few days after that,' Stearns
arrived ~nd erected his cabin as a squatter's claim, for a farm.
There i~ a cement marker at 615 Massachusetts Street which reads,
"Site of the first house in Lawrence,. 60 feet east."
In June of the same year, Achilles B. Wade built a cabin
east of the present Water Wbrks, on Indiana Street.
The old Babcock barn at 2239 West Drive was converted into
a duplex by George K. Melvin. Mr. Melvin's grandparents were
early settlers. Next door north on the Melvin property is a
small house built and used by the Babcocks for the servants.
At 623 Indiana, Adam Oliver brought his family from
England in 1858 and to Lawrence in 1862. After Quantrill's Raid
the family went to Canada for a short time, but soon returned to
Lawrence and Oliver built the house at 802 Tennessee. Many people
in Lawrence think the 802 Tennessee residence was the fitst house
of the Olivers, but records show otherwise.
Also in the' 800 block on Tennessee 1s 827 prese.ntly owned
by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Tait. This house was built on the edge of
a ravine which was later filled, leaving the first floor below
the ground level.
_
The Robert Hr Miller house, 1111 East 19th Street, was
built in 1858. It was' a farm' home then, and remained in the
Miller family until 1952.
The house at 743 Indiana Street was built by Hiram Towne, a
well-known contractor. This house was rented by Towne to a
WidOW·, r4rs. Emily Hoyt, but he reserved a room for himself.
Mr. Towne also built North College •.
Mr. F. W. Jaedicke, a. gunsmtt~ and hardware merchant,
purchased the home in 1879 and the house has remained in the
family, being presently owned by a daughter, Mrs. Otto A. Fischer.
The house at 1008 Ohio was built by George W. Bell.
The 718 Locust residence was built in 1869 by A. J. Dicker.
Dicker came to Lawrence in 1868 and built his grocery and mea.t
store in North Lawrence and a year later built his home east of
the store in the following block. The home is now owned and
occupied by Donald Dicke~.
Other homes include:
1106 Rhode Island--occupied by Tom Delahunty and his sister
was built about 1870 by Tom's f:3..ther, R •. Delahunty., He ';ias in
the transfer business when he came to Lawrence in 1867.
702 Rhode Island--built by Julius Fischer in 1869. He was
one of the original 15 Germans who were sent out in 1875 from
Chicago, by a. German Association, to found the town of Eudora.

JONES CEMETERY
L _ _ _---.J

The Jones Cemetery (also called the Vancil Cemetery) is located in
Clinton Township (Sec. 25, Twp. 13, R 18) two miles north of Lone Star
in the woods just to the west of a horse trail. A rock wall partially
encloses the cemetery. There are only two stones standing: one a footstone and the other a tombstone marking the graves of:
Abbie VANCIL, died May 16, 1857, age 13 yrs. 2 mos •.
Daniel VANCIL, died Jan. 3, 1864, age 50 yrs. 7 mos. 8 ds.
The VANCIL family lived in the Bloomington area which lies in the
valley about one mile north of the·cemetery. It is not known how many
people were buried here, but there are depressions where some of the
graves are located . . According to Ada Lindell in Will Hastie's Record of
Cemeteries of Douglas County, Kansas, six other graves are marked with
rocks at head and foot.
Marshall J. JONES and Mary Ann HOLMES, both born near London, England,
were married January 11, 1842, and came from Harper's Ferry, Va. to Kansas
in the spring of 1856. They had four boys and four girls. Martha PARKER
of the Clinton Lake Historical Society said that their great grandsons·,
Olin and Howard PETEFISH, only knew of four children. Marshall was a
deacon in the Baptist Church.
Hastie states that Marshall preempted the farm on which this cemetery
is a part, and that an indenture was made between Henry and Martha ULRICH
(daughter of Marshall and Mary JONES) to the Jones Cemetery Association
for $5.00 on August 25, 1884. The Trustees were: Henry ULRICH, James M.
HALBERT, Michael CATHERMAN, J.W. MATNEY, and Thomas BOND. These records
are on file in the Secretary of State's Office, Book 36, p. 336.
Marshall, Mary Ann and their oldest son A1pheus Alexander are buried
in this cemetery, all having died within a short time of each other. The
birth, death and marriage information was obtained from the family .Bible
which was later destroyed by fire.
Marshall J. JONES, Oct. 24, 1817 - Oct. 3, 1862
Mary Ann (HOLMES) JONES, Sept. 23, 1816 - May 19, 1863

OBITUARIES FROM TENNESSEE NEWSPAPERS
Compiled by: Jill L. Garrett
QUANTRILL, William Clarke., Monument. in
Dedicated to the memory of the 150
fell victims to the inhuman ferocity of
the infamous' Quantrell in his raid upon.
Erected 30 May 1896.

Lawrence County, Kansas:
citizens who defenseless
border guerrillas led by
Larence on 21 A.ug. 1863.

Quantrell, Kansas guerrilla and murderer, was captured in
Kentucky last week; brought to Louisville, badly wounded.
(Nashville Daily Union, 16 May 1865.)
(N. B. He signed his'
name Quantrill; he was born 31 July 1837 at Canal Dover, Ohio,.
died 6 June 1865 in Louisville; was buried in hidden grave at
St. John.' s Catholic Cemetery; in Dec 1887 his remains were moved
to Canal Dover, Ohio.) .
. Man known as T.•. G. Henderson died one. day last week at the
home of Mrs. Parnell in Birmingham, Alabama.. Before he died he
conf'ess'ed to her that he was Charles William Quantrell, the
fam6us Missouri ou~lawr who was supposed to have been killed in
a fight with Federal soldiers in Kentucky near the close of the
.war.
(Florence, A.la., Times, 17 Oct. 1.390.)
. The Lawrence Massacre'~ . Up to this 'morning 128 bodies have
been buried but it is still utterly impossible to obtain a
complete list of theirnames~ as s6 many are so much disfigured
as to prevent recognition, while others are still missing, and
are supposed to be concealed in the woods nearby or, they may
be in the ruins of the buildings, besides many left. with Lane
in pursui t of Marmaduke and not yet returned •.
Fifty of Quantrell'sgang who are citizens o~ Jackson
County, Missouri, and are all well known here and have been
considered Union men; many of them are paroled prisoners from
Pemberton's army, and some· of them are from Price's command,
from the fact that they are much sunburnt and have the appearance of having been long in the service.
After they had
some of them becama
their. horses" there
as to who they were

accomplished the destruction of Lawrence,
much intoxicated, but being strapped to
were none left behind to give information
or where they were from •.

Aug. 22--The citizens of Lawrence, shot by QUantrell's
band, number 108, incl ud ing the ~1aj or and his son. The inhabitant~ fled into ravines and bushes, where they were fired into
by the guerrillas. Twenty-five negro recruits were shot. The
guerrillas took all the money in the pockets of citizens and in
houses. They stole ladies jewelry even the rings from their
fingers.

QUANTRILL, William Clarke--continued
Jim Lane escaped on horseback, rallied about 200 m~n and
followed Quantrell about 12 miles south of Lawrenc~, where a
fight occurred,. the resul.t of which is unknow-rl. Quantrell is
now retreatirig toward Missouri, burning everything on his route.
No resistance was made at Lawrence, the people being shot down
as they ran through the streets in their night clottles, and
their. bodies thrown into 'wells and cisterns. The ci tizens had
been expecting this raid and had organized into companied for
defence, but from assurances that '~usmtrell would not invade
K~nsas, their organizations were abandoned and the gue~rillas
found them entirely defenceless. (Nashville Daily Union,
22 Aug 1863.)
Quantrell's force reached the headwaters of Grand River,
Cass County, Missouri, about noon on August 25, after burning
Lawrence and. then divided into squads of from 40 to 50, and
scattered in variOus. directions.
Quantrell's men told many persons before reaching Lawrence
that they were going to destroy the tOTl'ln, but by some strange
fatality~ the people along the route, who might easily have
gotten word to Lawrence, did not try. A messenger was sent by
capt. Coleman to notify the people of Lawrence of Quantrell's
appr'oach, but f~1.1ed to get through.
(Nashville Daily Uni-on,
25 Aug 1 8 6 5 ) ·
.
'Quantrell's raid made 85 widows and 250 orphans.
Dispatch, 28 Aug 1863.)

(Nashville

Aug 20--Guerrillas under Quantrell with SOO'men crossed
into'Kansas near Gardner, 4 mile~ below Leavenworth, and started
for Lawrence and pillaged stores, shot citizens and fired
houses.
(Nashville Dispatch, 22 Aug 1863.)
Quantrell's band is now retreating toward Missouri, burning
everything on the route. His force consists of guerrillas who
have been robbing and murdering along the border for months~
(Nashville Dispatch 23 Aug 1863)
,
As of the 24th, 128 bodies have been buried at Lawrence,
Kansas; others are missing and are probably in the ruins.
(Nashville Dispatch,. 26 Aug 1863.)
At. Lawrence, Kansas, 183 bodies have been buried and there
are 182 b~ildings burned.

Naturalizatiion' Records'
N'aturali zatiim records'may be a good source" of genealogical" data'~, Usual1y:
these p'apers were treasured family documents, and often were kept in the pages:
of the family Bible or with old family letters.
Because the first Naturalization )rct passed by Congress on 26 March 1790
provi ded that an ali en who desi red to become a ci tizen should apply- to 't-anycommon law court of record" i:n anyone of the states where he shan have resided'
fo'r the term of one year at least"', he may have been naturalized in the Federal,
State or Local Courts'.
On 29 Jan 1795', Congress passed a new N'aturali zation Act requiring a res-·
idence period of five years and renunciation of allegiances and titles of nobility
as pre",requisi te to citizenship., This was amended on 18; June H798 to require' :r:esidence of fourteen years, and declaration of iintention for five years'., However
this was repealed in 1802 when the Naturalization Law of 1795 was re-inacted~
Prior to the present Naturali zation Law (1952)', an applicant had to wait a11:
least two years after filing a Declaration of Intention to become a citizen before he could file a Petition for Naturalization. This is no longer necess~ry.
Records of naturali zation proceedings in the Federal Courts are usuarIy;:
found in records of the Dfstrict Court in which the proceedings took prace.
Records prior to 27 Sept 1906, may stillil be in custody of the court-, they may' have:
been transferred'to the' National!, ArChives:, or they may have been transferred' to
the Federal Records' Center operated by the GSA. Sfnce 1906:, dupTicates' of the
records are deposited with the Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization,
Washington, D~ C~
I'n the late 1930"s', the WPJt began to make photographic copies' of the records
and to index them. Copies and indexes filed by the courts in Maine, Massachusetts',
New Hampshire and Rhode lsland 1787-1906, and for the District of Columbia' 1802;...
1.926" are now, in the Nationa11 Archives.
Information on the records fnclude the place and date of birth of the alien,
the country' from which he emigrated, name of the vessel, date and port of arrfvall,
in the U. S., the name under which he traveled and more. An alien was permitted'
to change his name at the time of his' apprication fo'r citizenship', which decree
would be shown on the Naturali zation Certificate when issued.
Advice from the Federal Records Center is that the federal law which prevented copying of a Naturali zation Certificate has been repealed~ and that an
naturali zation records are public records;.
Not like the brazen gi ant of G'reek fame',
Wi th conquering limbs astride from land to lland;'
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates' shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch" whose flame
is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Grows world-wide welcome!;: her mi1l!d eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

The Last News From the Lecompton Constitution Committee
The Kansas City Star, Wednesday, 30 January 1894
"In the collection of the Kansas State Historical Society is now found
an old candle box with this inscription: The last news from the Lecompton
Constitution Committee.
This box was found buried under a woodpile adjoining the SurveyorGeneral (Calhoun's) land office at Lecompton, February 2, 1858. It contained
the returns of the election of December 21, 1857, for the Lecompton Constitution; also the results of the election of January 4, 1858, under said constitution, as sworn to by General Samuel Walker (Sheriff of Douglas County), by
Governor Denver, G.W. Dietzler (Speaker of the House of Representatives), and
C.W. Babcock, President of the Council of the Territorial Legislature of
Kansas.
This discovery is but one of the many important objects gained through
the exertions of the "Board of Commissioners for the Investigation of Election
Frauds." The board consists of Messers H.J. Adams, J.R. Abbott, Thomas Ewing,
jr., D. Pickering and H.T. Green.
Information has been received that the returns were under a woodpile,
instead of having been sent to John Calhoun by a messenger from Platte county,
Missouri as testified to under oath, on the 29th of January by General L.A.
Maclean, Chief Clerk of the Surveyor-Genera1's office. The board applied to
I. Miller, Judge of the Probate, who instructed Sheriff Walker to obtain the
people's assistance and search for said returns.
Having obtained the assistance of George Roberts, Lewis H. Tappan, Levi
Ga1ts, A. Gunther, L. Hanscourt, J.R. White, D.B. Hones, R. Hutchins, I.
Shepherd, S. Jerrold, H.J. King, J.F. Walker, J.B. Haines and C.H. Webster,
they proceeded -from Lawrence to Lecompton where they arrived at 12 o'clock
midnight, and procured this box and contents as above stated.
This added infamy to the Lecompton convention and affixed to its president the name of "Candle Box Calhoun". When the people voted on the constitution in August 1858, there were 1,788 for and 11,300 against it."

From Lawrence Daily Journal-World, Thurs., Oct. 10, 1929
Mrs. Jane BAKER to Douglas County in '54
In a request for names of persons who came to Kansas in 1860 and before and
are still living in the county the Journal-World received the following interesting letter from Mrs. Jane BAKER who lives on Route 1, Overbrook, Kansas:
"Seeing the ad in the Journal-World wanting the names of the old settlers I
will send in mine. I came with my parents to the south line of Douglas County
in 1854. I am still living three miles from where father took up his claim.
"Hy husband, John BAKER, came here in 1858. We were married in 1872 and have
lived here on this place ever since.
"We have raised six boys and all are married except one and he is with us yet.
"My husband is 85 years old and I will be 81 in November. If we both live
until the 29th of October, we will be married fifty-five years.
"I ~ doing my own washing and all my own house work and boarding the Brubaker school teacher.
"We. live twenty-two miles from Lawrence. I want to come to the anniversary
i f I can and I hope that it will be good weather."
--Jane Wiggins, Lawrence, KS.
