PRESIDENT'S LETTER
The past two years have passed quickly. The Douglas County Genealogical
Society has accomplished a great deal, but much work remains to be done. I
have had the good fortune and opportunity to meet, in person and by correspondence,
many endearing and interesting people. Some I will never see but the friendships
made will be remembered for a long time.
My own genealogy work has had to take a back seat to a great extent. But
the rewarding experience of helping others has given me an insight into many
ideas and methods of searching. I would recommend copying records for the
Pioneer, indexing census records, working on cemetery projects, copying city and
county records, etc., as an excellent way to practice, at home, the skills needed
to do research in far away places where your ancestors lived.
A great big thank you to all members and friends who have made the two y e 1:irs
of my presidency enjoyable. Your help and cooperation is greatly appreciated.

HURT WHILE FLUSHING SEWERS
John PATTERSON, A City Employee, Injured by Passing Team
John PATTERSON, a city employee, was flushing sewers in the manhole just
south of Winthrop St. at the east end of the old Windsor Hotel, this morning
about 9 o'clock, when he was seriously hurt by one of a team of EVANS Transfer
horses stepping into the open flushtank, and striking him on the head. The
driver did not see that the tank was uncovered. One of the horses hind legs
went down into the tank onto PATTERSON. The horse was rescued from his
perilous position and then PATTERSON was taken out. A Doctor was at once
, summoned, and after his injuries had been temporarily dressed he was taken to
his home. Dr.' SELLARDS found him in great pain and suffering from a bad cut
in the face. PATTERSON also complained of his side.

Viola KIDWELL was a cashier for the Farmers and Bankers Life Insurance Company,
Lawrence, Ks. They reproduced the following article. No dates were given.
A PATRIOTIC FAMILY
We were asked to reproduce the clipping printed below, as the various
branches of the KIDWELL family each wishes to preserve a copy in the family
records. We do not know what paper it is taken from. We are glad to reprint
the article with a few other facts we have learned of this unusual family of
brothers. There were ten of them when the war broke out--William, George,
Thomas, John, Luna, Henry, David, Joe, James and Joshua. All of them, except
the last two, served through the war in the. Union army. James was in the
service of the government as a mail carrier, and Joshua was too young. Thomas
was killed in battle. David and Luna were killed by guerrillas in Missouri
shortly after Lee's surrender. All the others lived to return to their home.
Henry KIDWELL was the husband of the Mrs. KIDWELL now living in Barnard. He
died in Eastern Kansas Nov. 24, 1889 and is buried in the soldiers' cemetery at
Fort Scott.
It will be noted that six of the KIDWELL boys were in one company;
ItW.L. Roney, Co. F. 8th Mo. S, M. Cav. Marquette, Kansas, writes: "I
send a list, alphabetically, of brothers in company to which I belonged. I was
First Sergeant most of the time, and have called the roll so often that the
names are all fresh in my memory. There were 23 sets of brothers in the company;
six in one set, four in another, three in two sets, and the remainder pairs.
The sets were as follows: Granvill F. BRYANT, William BRYANT; John BISHOP,
Richard BISHOP; John BLAKE, Joseph BLAKE; Geo. T. DELOSIER, Edward B. DELOSIER;

Many European immigrants settled in Lawrence in its early days. The
1860 census shows 88 from Ireland, 66 from Germany, 71 from England, 26
from Sweden, 16 from Wales, 7 from France, 7 from Scotland, 4 from
Switzerland, 1 each from Denmark, Austria, Holland, Norway and Poland.
Also listed 24 persons from Nova Scotia and 8 from New Brunswick.
The year Lawrence was settled 1854 was a peak year for German
immigration into the U. S.
Germans eventually became the most numerous
Europeans in the Town.
In 1855 there were at least two Germans living in Lawrence.
J. G.
Sands, a saddlemaker and H. Katzenstein, a fabric dealer. The Territorial
census (of 1855) show there were 115 Germans in the Territory.
Germans
were encouraged to emmigrate to Kansas by The New England Emmigrant

GOOD-BYE SAID IN TEARS
The Lawrence soldiers have gone. At 8:35 o'clock this morning, amid a
roar of cheers, shouts of farewell, and a shriek of whistles, their troop

PIONEER i'-UDlHFE
Reprinted from J~n. 1959

This article was taken from Ford Times, Ford Meter Box Co.,
January, 1980.
The hospital news in our local paper lists the births, and
while there may be some babies born in private homes in this
community they're either extremely rare or don't get into print.
In most of our country nearly all deliveries are in ho~pitals,
and doctors are in attendance at a large percentage of the
others.
As a result, loss of babies in childbirth is uncommon
and loss of mothers has approached zero.
The story of my grandmother makes an interesting contrast.
She died before I was born but my mother told me memories of her
childhood when Grandmother evideritly served as midwife for a
large number of farm families back in the 1~70's.
Grandmother
had eight children of her own, did all the managing and much of
the work in running the home on the farm, and still had time to
help all the neighbors in times 'of illtiess, birth and death.
Pay for such service was unthought of.
Mother recalled many times when, as a little child, she
would be awakened in the. night by a man coming to their home on
horseback, hearing a short muffled conversation, then Grandmother
riding away on a farm horse, lantern in one hand and a bag hanging on the saddle.
Grandmother would generally be back at
breakfast but none of the children felt bold enough to ask what
had happened.
They had learned that if they waited patiently
for a while it would be ~entioned in a casual way th~t some
neighbor had a baby born last night.
There is no way of kriowing what losses, if any, my grandmother had in her midwife service. She was lacking in many
things now considered necessary in obstetrics, and I suppose
our present-day obstetricians wonder how Grandmother (and the
countl.ess other "grandmothers" of a century ago) could do as
well as she did. But no doctor could have served less selfishly
or with more devotion and tender loving care, and these things
may be almost as important in most cases.as.the modern techniques
and equipment in our fine new hospitals..

The following is a copy of a review by Louise M. EVERTON of a book by one of our
members, Dr. Thomas GORTON. It appeared in the November-December, 1982 issue
of The Genealogical Helper.
SAMUEL GORTON OF RHODE ISLAND AND HIS DESCENDANTS, 1982. Published by Gateway
Press, Inc. Written by and available from Thomas GORTON, 831 Illinois Street,
Lawrence, KS ·66044. Hardbound, 6x9 inches, 568 pages, indexed, $30.00.

An attempt to trace the lineage of as many living descendants of Samuel
GORTON as possible and to. provide a new historical biography of the champion
of political and religious freedom, drawing largely upon original source
material, are the twofold, purposes of this history. Samuel GORTON, a towering
Colonial figure of whom his descendants might well be proud, was an early
Governor of Rhode Island and founder of the town of Warwick. He was born in
. the chape1ry of Gorton, city of Manchester, Lancashire, England. He was baptized on 12 February 1592/93. Samuel married, sometime before 1630, Mary
MAPLETT in England, they were parents to nine surviving children. Samuel and
Mary, several small children and Mary's. middle-aged servant, Ellen ALDRIDGE,
arrived in Boston from-England about March 1636/37. This family's movements
to Plymouth, Aquidneck, Providence, Pawtuxet, Shawomet, back to England and
then again returning to America are chronicled by the author. Twelve generations of the Samuel and Mary GORTON family are included in this fine history.
A.numbering system has been used to easily identify each descendant. A fu11name index completes this fine history.

SLAVES IN LECOMPTON
Yes, through research, we have found some interesting stories of the early
slaves of Lecompton. In the Lawrence Daily Journal World, March 13,. 1933, it
states "The first census of Kansas, taken February 28, 1855, showed there were
151 free Negros and 193 slaves. During the years 1854, 1855 and 1856, the slave
population increased to over 400, owned by about fifty slaveholders. But when
it became apparent that the Free State men were in the majority in Kansas ,. and
the slave code was abolished by the first state legislature, February 23, 1860,
the slave owners left the ~erritory and took their slaves with them.
In 1855, Col. H.T. TITUS and GeorgeW. CLARKE, of Lecompton, jointly owned
a slave named Ann CLARKE. She ran away to Topeka, but was arrested and returned
to her masters; but soon after escaped again and succeeded in making her way,
through the underground railway, to Chicago.
Douglas City, a short distance below Lecompton, on the Kaw river, is one of
the ghost towns of Douglas county. There were two slaveholders in Douglas City;
Mr. ELLISON and Mr. WALLIS. A slave named Buck JONES, owned by Mr. DOUGLAS, in
Lecompton, bought his freedom by working for wages in Lecompton.
The Lecompton Union, (newspaper) in 1856, offered a reward of $50 for the
return of "Judy" a slave, who was supposed to be secreted in Lawrence.
A Mr. BROOKS, in Lecompton, in 1855-56, owned four slaves. Judge Rush
ELMORE of the Kansas Territorial Supreme Court, brought fourteen slaves from
Alabama to Lecompton; but soon removed them to his farm, one mile south of
Tecumseh, in Shawnee county.'
There were slaves in Jefferson County. A man named SKAGGS in Kentucky
township, owned twenty-seven; but took them to Texas in 1859. Our subject was
one of these slaves, as he is listed in the 1855 census, as living with his
owner James SKAGGS, on the list of settlers on the Kansas Half Breed lands
opposite Douglas City, east of Lecompton. Also is listed in this same census
Mr. WID. F. BAYNE, whom our subject mentions in his article who was his wife's
master.
The following article was found in' "The Lecompton Sun"Friday, June 24, 1904.'
We thought this article would be interesting to our readers, as this. slave
Robert SKEGGS(SKAGGS) is buried at East View Cemetery, at Big Springs, Kansas.
The home that he bought is now owned by Art and Ethel PETERSILIE on County Road
111025, northeast of Big'Springs in Douglas County.
Robert SKEGGS (SKAGGS) who lives in the southwest part of this township,
is the only man on earth who was a slave in the city of Lecompton. Our illustration is a pretty fair likeness of Mr. SKEGGS as he looks today. Mr. SKEGGS'
history would read like a story from another world; as indeed it is. Half of his
life was spent in slavery, he having been almost 40 years old when his master
told him he was free .. The old gentleman says he is nearly 82 years old and the
way he first learned his age was at the time of his old master's death when the
appraisers were fixing the value of the slaves before dividing the property.
His young master gave his age as the same as that of his sister and she was 25.
His young master took him at.$700. though the slave trader in his old home in
Kentucky said, if they would put him on the block he would start him at $1800.
for he knew his trade would sell him well. He was a blacksmith. .His master,
James SKEGGS, brought him to Kansas in 1853, and they settled and built a cabin
in Jefferson county on the farm that Matt JONES sold to Charles STARK a few
years ago. Mr. SKEGGS remembers when there was only one house in Lecompton and

186

that was a "whiskey house." When he was a
slave he hewed, in the timber, the frame
work for the house that Mr. LEAMER lived in
for so many years and was torn down to give
place to his present residence. When Kansas
was admitted as a free state, his master
took him to Texas where he worked six years
a slave and two years a free man before he
got money to come· back to Kansas and see. his '.
wife's old master, Billy BAYNES, who lived
near Williamstown in Jefferson county. The
story of Mr. BAYNES' help and friendship and
the magnanimous way in which he gave Mrs.
SKEGGS her freedom. is a chapter by itself and
can not be told at this time. Mr. SKEGGS
spent his first year of. freedom farming .on
the shares; he got the ninth row of corn or
one bushel to the other man's eight. His
wife worked for her clothes and victuals
and the clothes and victuals of two of his
sister,' s children that s_he was raising.
The second year he got half and that year
made enough to "come back" to Kansas.

r.

ROBERT SKEGGS

Mr. SKEGGS and his wife are well respected by their neighbors. They are
honest, peacable, hardworking, colored people. They own the farm where they live
and owe no man a dollar. They are kind and hospitable and bear no resentment to
the system that kept them in slavery so long, and yet so long ago that a new
generation has grown up that never saw a human being that was once called the
property of others. Mr. SKEGGS often comes to town when he has business here
and never otherwise, for he is in no sense a loafer. He has promised to attend
the celebration at Lecompton, July 4th, and if his wife is able to come he will
bring her along.
The old
did not have
from, "but I
too, I could

man says that when he was informed by his'master he was free, he
a cent in the world, did not know where the next meal was coming
didn't worry. I knew if I could make a living for myself and him
get along some way with hi'mleft pff."

Col. NACE, Mr. & Mrs. WID. LEAMER, and a. few other old settlers remember Mr.
SKEGGS from slavery days and they say his word is reliable.

Books for the Athaeneum.
Several books have been.received from Mr. Amos A. LAWRENCE and Mrs.
Mary WEBB, of Boston, for the Lawrence Athaeneum, and a large addition
to those already received will be sent on to this city early in the
spring, when navigation opens.
.
Our Athaeneum, though young and in its infancy, starts with fair
prospects of becoming one of the first Literary Institutions in the
country. May it prosper, and shed its benign influences over the minds
of all the inhabitants of Kansas, is no doubt the ardent wish of its
pioneer founders.

John MAILEY, S.J. WILLIS, Regents.
Question for discussion before the Athaeneum on Tuesday evening,
the 30th inst:- "Should the policy of non-intervention on the part of
our government be departed from in the present contest in Europe?"
Disputants: Affirmative, J. HUTCHINSON, J. MAILEY; negative, J.
SPEER, E. CLARKE.
Herald of Freedom, Jan. 27, 1855, p. 2, c. 4
Chart of Lawrence
Gen. S.C. POMEROY who has recently arrived from Massachusetts, brought
with him several beautiful and well-executed charts of Lawrence, as surveyed by Mr. A.D. SEARL, of this city, in October last. It was lithographed
by L.D. BRADFORD and Co., of Boston, on a scale of 450 feet to the inch.
Every lot is numbered on the different streets in regular order. It is
an elegant piece of workmanship, and speaks well for the artists who were
engaged upon it. The streets, thirty-two in number, running north and
south, are named after the several States of the Union. Thirteen of the
streets in the eastern part of the city are named after the thirteen
original States. The balance of the streets west of Massachusetts street
are named after the remaining nineteen States, in the order in which they
were admitted into the Union - California street being at the extreme
western limits of the city. - What has of late been called Main street
is now named after the Old Bay State. - The streets running east and west
are named in honor of distinguished men, who have done something in the
sacred cause of liberty. Ten Parks are 'laid out within the city. Oread
Mount is set apart for schools and churches; Capitol Hill for colleges,
county buildings, etc. Five of these Parks have been named respectively
in honor of Roger Williams, Washington, La Fayette, Hamilton, and Franklin.
-Jane Wiggins, Lawrence, KS.
