PRESIDENT'S LETTER
This past year has been a very productive time for our society. Many
sizeable tasks have been undertaken. The gathering and preserving of the
older records from our county is certainly going forward with great gusto.
The largest project, 6f course, being the complete cemetery census of
Douglas County. The many people who contributed to this mammoth task and
will continue to contribute until it has been completed will have the unending gratitude of this writer.
The many people, both local and those who are in touch by mail or
telephone, contributed many hours of their time and interest although they
were not in our society. To all of them, a big "THANKS". But, honorable
mention must be made of the special people who helped read the stones in the
severe cold last winter. This took much determination on their part and
great dedication to the task set before them. 'Because they worked such long,
cold hours, I want to here recognize each one:

EDITOR'S MESSAGE
The one person who is missing from the list above without whom the
Cemetery Project would not have progressed to where it is today is out
President, Jean Snedeger. Her enthusiasm and dedication to this important
task have been extraordinary. The record shows that during the past year
she has copied more than 15,000 Douglas county cemetery stones. She deserves
our sincere gratitude.
I wish to thank all of those people who continue to contribute their
time and material to "The Pioneer." If there are particular articles or
records which you would like to see in future issues of "The Pioneer,"
please let me know. Your suggestions are always welcome.
Sincerely,
Judy Sweets

Melvin Millard (1897-1973); Fay Etta (1899); Nina Hazel (1901);

THE OLD QUAKER MEETING HOUSE DISAP.PEARS

I

I'

I1_--- ___ ___ _ __ _

_.

Abstracted from an article by Edward Bumgardner in the
Journal World, (Lawrence, Kansas), Saturday. August 23. 1941.
The recent dismantllng of the old Quaker church in east
Lawrence and the use of part of the material for the construction
of a new temple of worship makes the present seem to be an appropriate time to recount briefly the history of the old church and
pay tribute to the memory of some of the worthy citizens who were
accustome~ to assemble under its roof.
Soon after the settlement of Indiana Quakers at Springdale.
Kansas in 1857. came the founding ot a Quaker settlement about
'
twelve miles east of Lawrence. The 'first settlers were Jonathan
and Phoebe MENDENHALL. Lev1 and Sarah WOODARD. and George ROGERS.
This community was called Springfield. In 1869. Springfield.
thereafter known as HESPER. requested a qUarterly meeting wh1ch
wasse,t upon the f1fth of the th1rd month of 1870. At one time
H'e'sper had a membership of 1400.
. The "fIrst Quaker meeting 1n Lawrence was held in July. 1863. \:-- ,
less than a month before Quantril1"fs raid. In 1865. several
.
Quaker families settled 1n Lawrence. Washington HADLEY was the
f1rst to settle here. He was to become the f1rst president of
the National Bank of Lawrence. the president of the gas company.
served two terms as mayor of Lawrence. and took an act1ve part
in the format1on,of the yearly meeting after serving as the first
clerk of the ReS'pST' Quarterly meeting.
The f1rstpreacher for the Lawrence congregation was Mrs.
M. Cox. who served from 1867 to 1879 without pay. She was
succeeded by Wil11am NICHOLSON. The first supported pastor in
the state was John VI~NEDGE. who ministered to the HOMESTEAD
monthly meet1ngs in 1886. The first paid pastor in Lawrence was
William WOOTEN. who served from 1897 to 1908.
'
The Kansas Yearly Meet1ng of Friends was organized in 1872
and figured in notable migrat10n of Friends to Kansas. The Fr1ends
~eet1ng house stood on a knoll 1n east Lawrence from 1872 to the
present summer (1941). Stone and lumber from the old structure
were used in the new Friends church at ,S:ixteenth and New Hampshire
streets.
'
The first meet1ng 1n the new temple Was in October. 1872.
The total attendance was estimated at 3000. That was more than
the total number reported by the four qUarterly meetings. (Springdale had 536 members; Hesper 720; Cottonwood 594; and Spring River

767) .

..'

,

Other Lawrence area Quakers mentioned in this rather lengthy
article were: Richard A. COX. Mahlon H. NEWLIN. Albert L.• COX. ""
John M. NEWLIN. Edmund STANLEY. Joh:ij D. MILES. Laban J. MILES. . . . .
Mrs. A. HENLEY. and Walter Roscoe STUBBS. who later became Govet-n6r'
of the state of Kansas.

Ahnentafel is a German word which means ancestor table(i.e. Ahnen=
It is a concise way in which to list your ancestors and
their vital statistics in an easily readible form.
By using the pedigree chart you can easily construct your own Ahnentafel. For
example. counting yourself as number one (Hl) on your pedigree chart. simply
transfer your name and pedigree number and your year and state (or country) of
birth to the top of the Ahnentafel chart. The names and dates of your parents.
(#2 and #3) • are then listed in numerical order under your name 'on the. chart.
'rhen begin listing your paternal grandparents' names and dates in their numertcal
order. followed by your maternal grandparents. Continue in this manner. listing
as many of your ancestors as you have on your pedigree chart. The empty spaces on
your pedigree chart are skipped completely on your Ahnentafel chart. 'l'hus. i f
you kno..., the name of your paternal great-grandfather. but not the name of yC'ur
paternal great-grandmother. you would list his name (#8). skip her·number (#9) and
go on to person #10.
Using the following examples of an actual pedigree and ahnentafel. it is easy
to see in what manner the Ahnentafel was constructed. Gail lists herself as #1.
followed by her father (#2) and her mother (1f3). She then lists her paternal
grandparents (H4 and #5). her maternal grandparents (#6 and #7) and her paternal
great-grandparents (#8.#9.#10 & #1.1) • Sl..nce the names of her maternal great-grandparents are at this time unknown. their numbers are not written on the Ahnentafel
chart. Instead. the next number and name listed is that of the paternal greatgreat-grandfather (#16), whose name is known.
Remember that a father's number is always twice that ~f his child's, while a
mother's number is always one more than her husband's. Looking at our example.
notice that the father of Frank Garrett (#4) is Marcus Garrett (2 X #4= #8) ,
while his mother is Clara Belle Speer (#8+1=#9). To find the child of Edwin M.•
Jenkins (#10). simply divide by two and find that #5 (Nona Jenkins) is his
daughter.
Because of their compact quality, Ahnentafels are handy for exchanges with
other genealogists and show at a glance which ancestors you have knowledge of and
which ones you are still seeking.
On the following page we show the Ahnentafel of one of our members. Gail'
Garrett Van Loenen. what not try to construct· your ~ Ahnentafel. using the
steps outlined above?

Ancestor~ tafel= table).

Failure to Keep Records
One of the most interesting landmarks in Douglas county to those with
a historical turn of mind is the old Pioneer cemetery, originally called
Oread cemetery. It was the first public burying ground for the use of
citizens of Lawrence.
Much of the early history of Lawrence may be reconstructed in the mind
of the observer by reading the inscriptions on the moss covered and broken
head stones in the cemetery.
The cemetery is located southwest of the University, on the road
leading from the campus to Number Six school. It is a six-acre plot, a
little north of the center of the east side of the NE quarter of .section 2,
township 13, range 19.
According to information compiled by Elmer E. BROWN, the land where
the cemetery is located was preempted by Aaron PERRY. It was established
soon after the settlement of Lawrence and burial was by permission and without system or plot.
Burials may have been. made prior to 1855 but the first burial by
marked monument was that of Cornelius C&~BE~L. The inscription on the
stone says that he died on April 22, 1855 at the age of 56 years.
The second oldest burial, according to marked stones, was that of
Carl G. RAU.
The third burial was that of Thomas W. BARBER, who died on December 6,
1855.
QUANTRILL's raid on August 21, 1863 added many new gra"es to the
cemetery. Most of the victims were interred there but upon opening Oak Hill
cemetery in 1865 many bodies of QUANTRILL's victims were moved to the new
burial ground. A suitable monument was erected to the victims. According
to stones remaining in the old burial grounds a large number of the victims
of the raid still rest where they were first buried. The reinterment of the
QUANTRILL victims was carried out in 1872. Elmer E. BROWN says the G.A.R.,
thru the efforts of C.W. SMITH, applied to the government for markers for
the graves of the Wisconsin soldiers and these were finally received and set
up by Charlie APITZ under the direction of SMITH. Some 20 of these markers
are still in the Pioneer plot.
BROWN says that thru the efforts of Mr. SMITH funds were raised to
build a monument to the unknown dead of the Civil war. O. WHIPPLE, a
plasterer and stone mason and a member of the G.A.R., built a monument of
brick and plastered it. Metal letters forming an inscription were placed
on it but have long since fallen away.
BROWN says the cemetery was once surrounded by a well-laid dry rock
wall fence. Boys after rabbits tore down the wall and the stone was
gradually hauled away.

31

A black locust thicket grew over most of the ground and when the
surroundi~g property came into the possession of N.A. GWIN, he made the

proposition that if materials were furnished he would fence the ground and
turn his herd of goats in to clean off the brush. The fence was built and
the brush cleared away.
Early in the history of the cemetery, N.P. DEMING found that the deed
to property held by him to the north of the cemetery covered all or a part
of the cemetery, and BROWN says C.W. SMITH raised $135 to purchase the land
from DEMING. The deed was made on April 1, 1867.
The following, written by W.C. SIMONS, is taken from the Lawrence
Journal World of May 11, 1915:
"BEAUTIFUL OLD FORGOTTEN CEMETERY"
Tragic story of the early days of Lawrence written in stone where
early martyrs rest. Records have been lost and many of the dead have been
forgotten. The cemetery came into disuse more than forty years ago, when
Oak Hill was opened.
Within five minutes walk from Mount Oread, with its teeming life, is
a quiet and beautiful city of the dead in which sleep those who passed away
during the early daYS,,~/of Lawrence.
Originally a stony knoll, overlooking the Wakarusa, it has now
a spot of great beauty shaded by trees planted by loving hands many
ago. ~ere sleep early settlers, men,who fell in the border warfare
martyrs to freedom and beside them sleep little babes, who, if they
lived, would now be old men and women, for this quiet and forgotten
was used sixty years ago.

Here, too, rest a large number of soldiers from Wisconsin regiments,
probably little more than boys when they marched away from their homes in
the sixties, and for half a century they have been resting with their faces
turned toward the azure blue of a Kansas sky.
The story of epidemics which swept away the little ones is told by a
large number of little slabs bearing almost the same date. Perhaps it was
scarlet fever, or diphtheria, before the modern anti-toxins of today were
known, but whatever it was it robbed: the poor homes of the early settlers
of Lawrence of their dearest treasures.
Character there is also in the monuments still standing or lying
broken on the ground. We find the ephemeral American policy of show in a
stucco monument to "tile unknown dead and the solid, enduring work of the
Germans in solid granite set about with iron posts and chains which show
little wear for their half century of exposure.
It was a long way to the old settler, perhaps two miles from Massachusetts s,treet and it was then up almost inaccessible hills, but those
who were living followed the bodies of their dead and planted trees which
have now grown to large proportions. Even these old trees show the marks
of storms which have blown across the hill and have left broken branches
and twisted trunks.

32

As nearly as can be learned, this old cemetery, which has been known
as Oread, was opened in 1854 or 55,within a year after the town of Lawrence
was founded.
At the corner nearest the city are some evergreens which were planted
by the late N.P. DEMING to mark the graves of his parents. Old Mr. DEMING
loved trees and together with Chancellor MARVIN years ago planted the
walnuts which have grown into the beautiful grove just north of the
university buildings.
The very large proportion of soldiers from the Third Wisconsin cavalry
buried in the old cemetery is said to be due to the prevalence of an epidemic--Wi11iam CRUTCHFIELD says Cho1era--that was prevailing here while
this regiment was in camp enroute to some more southerly point. Others
admit the prevalence of disease but do not think it was cholera. Mr.
EDWARDS and Mr. HUDDLESTON remember the unusual mortality among the Wisconsin men while the Third was temporarily here, but as stated, they do not
agree with Mr. CRUTCHFIELD as to the cause. All the burials of the men
from the Wisconsin regiment seem to have been made in the old cemetery, and
more of them, in fact, than the old headstones disclose, because some of
the bodies, none knows how many, have been taken up and sent East, and
still others are in Oak Hill. The Wisconsin regiment did not have any
fight while here, all are positive, and they are certain its mortality was
caused by disease.
Not a line of the original records about the old cemetery are in
existence, so far as the Oak Hill cemetery officials 'and the old settlers know.
The Rev. L.R. NICHOLS, who died in Lawrence in 1858 and was buried in
the old cemetery and whose body is yet there, is described by William
CRUTCHFIELD as "A young preacher, probably 21 years old, who did not have
any pastorate, but 'preached around' here and there." He had not been
ordained, Mr. CRUTCHFIELD thinks, but was a divinity student out getting
experience. He died of a fever.
Charles L. EDWARDS remembers distinctly the first death in Lawrence,
and remembers seeing the funeral procession wind about the foot.and slopes
of Mount Oread on its way westward. Mr. Edwards was not at the burial,
but was very certain the interment was made in the old cemetery and that
it was the first interment therein. The dead man was name~d POMEROY (from
ANDRES history the name is Moses POMEROY)" and he was a near relative of
S.C. POMEROY, afterwards United States senator from Kansas.
David C. BUFFMAN, who is buried in the old cemetery, and who died
September 17, 1856, was shot by men, probably "border Ruffians, II who
robbed him of his horses while he was working±~ the field. He resisted,
or at least protested, and was murdered in cold blood. He did not die at
the time, but lingered, and was able to tell how he came to meet his death.
This-incident Mr. EDWARDS remembers distinctly.
Thomas W. BARBER, an uncle of O.P. BARBER, of Lawrence, died at a
point on the highway four miles west of Lawrence, December 6, 1855, under
the following circumstances;
He and his brother Robert and Thomas PIERSON, brother-in-law of the
BARBERS, were returning to their homes eight miles southwest of Lawrence,
following the old California road. They had reached a point where their

33

route swerved from the California road toward the southwest when they saw
at a distance to the northwest a party of men supposed by them to number
a hundred or so. As they looked two of the three men rode away from the
main body and "cutting across" intercepted them. The Lawrence men anticipated no trouble and did not run. As they came up to the two men one of
the latter engaged the~ in conversation, and asked them where they were
from. Thomas BARBER answered, "Lawrence." One of the two, a quite young
man, then began to curse and said, "Why don't you fellows obey the law?"
and pulling a pistol fired directly at Thomas BARBER's chest, and followed
. it up with a shot aimed at Robert BARBER's groin. This second shot passed
through the saddle seat and into the horse Robert BARBER was riding. All
five then put spurs to their horses, riding directly away. from each other-one party eastward, the other westward. Robert BARBER, the only one of the
Lawrence men armed, shot at the two retreating men several times, and it
is thought he slightly wounded one of them. About a hundred yards west of
where the shooting took place Thomas BARBER sank from his horse, saying
he was shot. The others dismounted and Thomas died a few moments later.
The slayer of BARBER was never identified.
Thomas BARBER was born in 1814, and came to Kansas from New Paris,
Ohio.
Following is given the names and some of the data to be found on the
stones:
Caro1ita M., daughter of W. M. and M. L. BURHANS, July 25, 1868,
aged 19 months
At Rest, Jacob S., son of Absolom and Anna T. HOLCOMB, June 7,

L. F. AHRBERG, June 12, 1865.
L. M. HOLTZLANDER, Oct. 13, 1864. (This monument is leaning against
a tree and the grave it formerly marked may have been opened.)
A large stucco monument is marked with a copper slab upon which
appeared originally in white letters the following inscription:
"To the unknown dead Union Soldiers of the Civil war."
A broken slab, with a hand pointing upwards, was marked:
Frances M., wife ofJ.C. CUNNINGHAM, Aug. 12, 1864.
"I know that my Redeemer liveth."
Nearby are a large number of stones evidently furnished by the Federal
government to mark the graves of soldiers. Simply the name and company is
given and if one wishes further information there are somewhere the original
rosters of the companies.

James HALL, May 5, 1867. Age 54. At this grave is a locust tree
nearly two feet in diameter and about it are a number of graves ~arked with
ordinary stones.
In the south-western part. of the cemetery are a lot of graves, no
telling just how many, simply marked with the plain limestone pi~ked up in
the cemetery and placed to mark the grave temporarily until a better mark
could be secured. Those who placed their loved ones there have forgotten
them and today there is probably no one who cares.

The best preserved grave and markings in the cemetery is the one
which reads as follows:- Gatte. Carl G. RAU. Geb. 22 Mai 1827, Gest.
4 Nov. 1855. Gewidmet von der Wittwe Elise geb. MAIER, mit ihremkind.
The stone is of solid granite and shows no wear while the four heavy iron
posts connected with chains will stand for a hundred years to come. The
best translation the writer could make is "Husband. Carl G. RAU born May 22,
1827, died Nov. 4, 1855. Erected by the widow, Elise born MAIER, with

That monument makers could make some queer freaks in the way of stone
cutting is shown by the following verse which is given line for tine as it
appears on the stone:

Mr. MATTHEWS apparently loved his young wife dearly and in two months

Henry B. SHAW, Sept. 22, 1858. Age 23.
John T., son of David and Mary EVANS, Apr. 12, 1864.

Age 15 mos.

A stone upon which the name STEARNS and the date 64 could be made
out was so deeply buried that the rest of the inscription could not be read.
There is evidence of an old trail leading through the cemetery and
Mrs. Paul R. BROOKS says that this road was open and used after the cemetery
was abandoned, but was finally ordered closed. The grounds were not fenced
until taken over by Mr. GWIN to be pastured by his goats.
A concensus of the opinions of E. HUDDLESTON, William CRUTCHFIELD
and Charles L. EDWARDS indicates pretty conclusively that the old cemetery
which was deserted in 1865 was abandoned for the most part because it was
comparatively inaccessible--much more so at least than the Oak Hill Cemetery.
Much of the distance was up a stiff grade, and the new site proved so much
more popular that after the new cemetery was opened internments out there
practically ceased. The soil in the old cemetery is said to be for the
most part not so fertile as in Oak Hill, and that fact had considerable
influence in the abandonment.

Charles STARKWEATHER reports that the STARKWEATHER family was living
over the ALLEN hardware store at the N.E. corner of Massachusetts and Seventh
streets at the time of Quantrill's raid. Burials of the following members
of the STARKWEATHER family were made in Pioneer cemetery.
Mary E. MOORE, grandmother of Charles STARKWEATHER, was born in
North Carolina, came to Kansas in April, 1863, died fall of 1872, aged
about 80 years.
John Noble STARKWEATHER, born in Vermont in 1828, came to Kansas in
March, 1863, died in November, 1870. (Father of Charles STARKWEATHER)
Oscar STARKWEATHER, born in Lawrence and died in 1868, age one year.
Not a line of the original records about the old cemetery are in
existence, so far as the Oak Hill cemetery officials and the old settlers
knew.
The date shown on the monument for Sarah PEAKE, Sept. 23, 1882, was
the latest date to be found in the cemetery when Hastie compiled his
Record of Cemeteries of Douglas County, Kansas, in 1939. This probably marks
one of the last burials to be made in the nineteenth century in this cemetery.
Burials were made again beginning in the 1960's. Following is a list of the
twentieth century interments.

the City of Lecompton as a voting place, Calhoun 1n the northeast
with Lawrence as a vot1ng place, Wash1ngton 1n the southeast with
Palmyra as a vot1ng place and Wakarusa 1n the southwest with Bloom1nton as a vot1ng place.
On a map published on the 4th of July. 1857, it appears that the

In August of 1858, the townships were: Lecompton. Lawrence.
Eudora. Palmyra (changed from Calhoun), W1llow Springs, Marion and
Clinton. In 1859. Kanwaka townsh1p was formed ,and in 1867 Grant
