You enjoyed the happiness of work and family.
Felt the pangs of grief that comes to us all.
Your cheerful self has gone on to realm more tranquil.

A heartfelt tlThanks~ to those who "helJ)ed' to make this a most
productive year for our Society. Many projects have been successfully completed and new ones started.
Remember. helping with these projects can be a valuable
learning experience and will help when researching your own fam1ly
lines. The erosion of time causes a "wearing away" of records and
family history will be lost to many future generations if we don't,
compile information now. Rewarding friendships are created from
working together. Let's keep going.

At first. it was theor1zed that Mr. RUTH m1ght have committed suicide
until a search of Mr. RUTH I s bedroom revealed a small diary or memorandum book whioh included a letter implioatlng Dr. MEDLICOTT. The
letter had been written the night before by Mr. RUTH and addressed
to Mrs. RUTH, who had gone to Leavenworth for a couple of days. The

Dr •. John J. MEDLICOTT was born about 1841 1n Ireland (or was
of Irlsh descent)\ He was reared ln Marletta, Ohl0, served in the
Army ln a W. Vlrglnla Reglment, wasdlsmlssed ln 1864,/-and studled
Med1clne ln Clnnclnatl, Ohl0. In 1868, he marrled Mrs.- SarahE-. -DOYLE, a: wldow, "many years hls senlor" at Hagerstown, Maryland.
They moved to Lawrence soon after and he opened a practlce at hls
resldence. He was a member of the Eplscopal church. In 1871, hls
parents were stll1 llvlng ln Mar1etta, Ohl0, he had one marrled
slster ln Pennsylvanla. two ~rled slsters ln Kentucky (one brotherIn-law named WATSON, one named JONES) and one unmarrled slster ln
Clnclnnatl, Ohl0. Hls In-laws, parents of Mrs. Sarah DOYLE MEDLICOTT
had dle~ suddenly a few years before In.Maryland.
Mr.s. Isaac M. RUTH (Ann Catherlne VOULLAIRE RUTH. also known as
"Kate" or "Kltty") was sald to have been a French Creole. born ln the
. South about 1836. Her malden name ls unknown, but her mother's name
ln 1871 was "Mrs. MURRAY". ~j's-.-RUTH-was des·crlbed. as a- beautlful
and well-educated woman who could speak several languages and had
muslcal abillty. She went to St. Louls about 1853. where she marrled
a young lawyer, Seymour VOULLAIRE, who afterwards became Dlstrlct
Attorney of St. Louls. They ¢arrled, had s1x chlldren and remalned
together at least ten years untll she became lnvolved with Mr. I~'M •

the VOULLAIRE's were dlvorced and on 29 Jan 1868 Mr. RUTH and MIS.
VOULLAIRE were marrled ln St. Louls. It wasn't long before they ~, moved to Lawrence. where they 11ved wlth four of her chl1dren. (The
VOULLAIRE chl1dren declded to adopt the name DeSPANGH. whlch was
thelr maternal grandfather's surname. He was supposedly a French
nobleman). It was ln Lawrence that Mrs. RUTH met Dr. MEDLICOTT.
Isaac M. RUTH had llved ln Lawrence slnce the 1850's. He
drove a mllk wagon for qulte a few years before he went to St. Louls.
Hls father's name was also Isaac and he had at least one brother.
named Davld. Hls flrst wlfe was a Mrs. BENNETT. a dl vorcee whom he
probably marrled ln Kansas. She later dled suddenly. At the tlme
of the Clvll War he went to St. Louls and became a clerk ln the Post
Offlce (or a reporter for the Mlssourl Republlcan). After' hls death
and autopsy. he was burled ln Westchester. Pennsylvanla.
THE TRIALS_,

E-~

Dr. MEDLICOTT had been ln the Lawrence jal1 fo~nearlyjhalf
a year when hls trlal was moved to Garnett. Kansas (Aiiderson Co~J.
Due to wldespread publlclty. lt was felt that he would not get a falr
trlal ln Douglas County. ~WLRepy,bllcan Joy,[ni-l. a Lawrence newspape,r.
gave detalled coverage of the trlal from Oct lO'to"'Dec 9 .~ :t$2f: Dozens

Samuel WALKER. Doctors were called to testlfy about the morphlne
found ln Mr. RUTH's body. (I t was reported that there was so much
polson ln hls body that flles on the sheet thrown over hls body were
polsoned and hundreds of them fell dead on the floor). Nelghbors
suggested that Dr. MEDLICOTT may have polsoned a black woman and
several cats as an experlment a few months before Mr. RUTH I S death.
Much lnformatlon was glven about the llfestyle and hablts of the
'
RUTH and MEDLICOTT families. Henry JOHNSON (allas Wm. Sperry~,., a
cellmate of Dr. MEDLICOTT. testlfled about an elaborate escape attempt
planned by the doctor. coded le,tters he passed out of the jal1 and

But the f1nal chapter of Mrs. RUTH's life is no mystery. This
woman, with "eyes black as coal emitting sparks that 19n1 te the t1nder
of a suscept1ble heart" went to New Orleans where she met (and married?) Mr. KELLEY, an agent of a steamship line, had a son, Paul and

Twelve years after the RUTH murder ln Lawrence, Kansas, a couple

identified by her son, Belmont DeSPANGH. Unknown to her children and

and Mrs. SHEPARD. It was believed that Mr. SHEPARD. a yound man in
his 20's wlth a gentle manner and from a very flne family of Saybrook.
Conn •• had recently learned of her past and that he had kllled her

2. 1859

Gentlemen: I lost ln the dlsturbances of 1855 and 1856: Flrst. one valuable
horse. about the middle or last of November. 1855; he dled ln consequence of
hard driving to glve me and others notlce of the Mlssourl lnvaslon: he took the
horse ln my absence: the young man has since dled.
Second. I lost near the same tlme. but a few days later. a valuable mare
rode by a young man. the particulars of whlch I know.,nothlng further than his
report. He sald she fell and killed herself. I have not seen or heard of the
man for three years past. These two horses I drove from Indlana. and they were
worth there $150 each. and more here.
Thlrd, I loaned to Mr. LOWRY a mule to rlde durlng the winter of 1856. I
went to Lawrence for her once and she was gone to Leavenworth. he did not know
who had her. She was taken from him again and rode to Fort Scott. to organize the people for detence, & etc. Durlng this trip she was tied out to a tree
over night 1n the snow several times with nothing to eat. and somt1mes travelled all da~without food. so I was told. When she returned to Lawrence. she
was sick and never recovered. she lived a few months and died. She was a
large mule. 16 hands hlgh. three'''years- old. coming four: I paid $175 for her
in Missouri.
Fourth. I lost a large red ox. which I believe was killed and eaten by
the free-State army in Lawrence. in August. 1856.
One of my neighbors. Ell HUDDLESTON. told me he thought he helped to
dress him. It was common then to drive in cattle and kill them. Thlsc'ox was
worth i50.
)
Fifth. I lost a heifer which was kllled and eaten. A young man who has
slnce worked for me helped to do 1 t: His name is Henry C. CARPENTEB. He 1s
not in the Territory now. and I do not know where he ls. ,She was worth $25.
The evidence substantiat1ng these claims is on file with General STRICKLER
During the sUlDlller of 1856. while the free-State army was encamped near my
house. a few days previous to the at~acks on Franklin. Fort Saunders. and
Titus's fort. and for several days after. I was forced by circumstances and by
my sense of duty to feed many men. My provision and grocery bill was three
hundred dollars for these expenses. I was forced into the position of defending the country. and I was obliged to do it or run. G.W. HUTCHINSON is my
witness'~ere also Captain BELL. and Dr. ROOT, and many others.
There was no time from May tll1 September, 1856. that I d1d not have from
two to three sick persons to take care ot, made sick. I believe, by exposure
and hardship in defence of the Territory. I cla1m $)00 for money expended. but
nothing for serv1ces.

They started from here. with two light teams and went allover the
territory and when they could find no place like BISMARCK, they all
gottogether one night at dark and said. "See here suppose we all
journey northward to a colder climate." No sooner were these words
spoken then all the family together arose and agreed to start at the
dawn of day for a land that is fairer than Oklahoma.
, An upper boy, a son of the late Dan BANKER, aged about 9 years
turned in one day last week to Aunt Sibley WALKER for a home where
he now'is unt1;.l a home is found for him. The boy has been turned
loose with no',~,one to care for .him. There were two boys of them not
related, that for months past have been running on the commons awaitlng some chance' to get to the reform school. Not long since' one of-:-, '
, them stole a dollar and by thls generosity on his part got two weeks
in the calaboose where he enjoys life to lts fullest e~tent.

E.W. BLAKER is perhaps the oldest gardener and vegetable deliverer in the, county. After passlng hls eighty-flrst mile stone he sells
more garden produce and the longer he lives the more he is known as
a peddlar.

A young man by the name of James MORROW, who for a few years past
has llved near BISMARCK, has been missing from his home forfou.r
weeks. He' owned about twenty acres ln po;t's.toes,' all of whlch are
stlll beneath the sod. He left a wife and four children; not one
of them know of hls whereabouts. He planted these acres w1th the
h1gh hope of making a raise, and seeing noth1ng prospect1ve before
h1m, his discouragement has led hlm either to sulc1de or derangement.
Somethlng of a search has been lnstltuted several times, only to
find no trace of the unfortunate man. His we1ght will reach near
200 pounds, and he is quite an iritellig~nt man 1n conversat10n,
be1ng always a hard work1ng farmer.
E.W. BLAKER, so well known around BISMARCK is spending a few
weeks at.Bonner Springs at ~ Methodist camp meet~ng.
OutSiders, or those who never go to town to trade, should spend'
some of their money wi th, J,.H. MILLER, who runs a stand outside of
the city limits by keeping q·il1.-te a store of goods.
The republicans made a rally last Saturday might at the br1ck
school house with several speakers from Lawrence.

A cur10us and rather a startllng lncldent occurred at the ~~',
" dlnner table. A mali who had been 81 ttlng at Mr a ARTHUR' s left and
who had been plylng hlm w1th questlons was suddenly dragged out by
the Deputy Sherlff upon the charge of havlng k1lled BAILEY o~ th~
prevlous nlght. Learnlng that hls nelghbor at the ~lnn~r taol'e, ,tilas
a lawyer the accused, whose name 1s not remembered,.~~iins~8ted upon
retalnlng hlm for the defense ln the com1ng examlnatfon whlch was
to oocur lmmedlately. Excuses and decllnatlons were of no avall:
the man was very much determlned that the young lawyer from the East
should remaln and defend hlm. Flnally, Mr. ARTHUR agreed to go wl th
hlm before a maglstrate, ~ut upon arrlv1ng there succeeded ln Induclng hlm to employ other counsel.
A stlll more amuslng and lmpresslve clrcumstance whlch the

Presldent recalled with twlndllng eyes and an lnfectlous laugh, was
that the Sherlff had ln the room ln whlch the magistrate sat all the
prlsoners under hls charge. The jall was so lnsecure that he was
obllged to take hls prlsoners wlth hlm and he had them all herded up
ln a corner llkeso many sheep. ThePresldentremembers a 11 ttle
red-headed fellow, appar, ently about 16 years old who had be,en ar:';"
rested for kllllng hls own cousln ln a quarrel over a game of cards.
There were some half-dozen other prlsoners, all crowded lnto the
corner and surrounded wlth a klnd of paling. The examlnatlon of
the alleged murderer contlnued for a day or two, and the Presldent
belleves he was flnally dlscharged, but ln the meantlme he and hls
frlend had returned to Lawrence.
'
The Presldent reoollects vlsl;t;lng one or two other places lni-.,
the 'l',errltory, but cannot now recal;!. the partlculars. He dld 'not,
go to Topeka, then scarcely more'th8n a mere settlement, as he was
lnformed, but whlch he now knows to be a large and flourlshlng clty.
But for the panlc of 1857 and lts far-reachlng consequenoes, the
Presldent feels persuaded
that ~e would have settled ln ,the ,-West •.

Well, Dudley, I was at a croquet party one week ago yesterday
afternoon. Had a very passable time. But I would enjoyed myself much better if you had been there. You cannot guess who'
came home with me. You need not guess Keely for he was no~here.
But guess Irving Love & you will guess it. Well if George &
Will had not told you about the hoppers I would say something
but that was the subject of their letters. The neighbors are ,
all well as far as I know. Mrs. Ferguson has not written yet.
If she does write I will tell you what she says in her letter.
If Frank and Ellen are anywhere about tell them that I send my

write a little to Chas & Annie.
