PRESIDENT '.§ LETTER t

Our Society has made great strides this past year. The membership
has doubled and continues to grow. Our finances were boosted through
a booth at the Sidewalk Bazaar last summer and three rummage sales.
Our library, housed in the Lawrence Public Library, continues to
grow. I extend thanks to all who made these achievements possible.
We have had a variety of guest speakers, as well as speakers from
our own group. These included: Arlene Eakle - Workshop; Ronald
Bremer - Seminar; Jim Martin - "Genealogy in General;" Don Hensen "Incorporation;" Sarah Judge - "Genealogy Fever;" Joyce Hensen "Value of a Good Newsletter;" Edna Welling - "Mormon Records;"
Helmut and Ursulla Huelsbergen - "German Records;" Robert Burt "S ons of the American Revolution;" and Dale Nimz - slide show on
"Old Houses in Lawrence."
I, too, joined the ranks of speakers, glvlng sessions on "Genealogy,
How to Begin," and on IIImmigration, Naturalization and Service Records.
In addition, I spoke at a symposium in St. Joseph, Missouri, celebrating
the 50th anniversary of the National Archives, on IIResearch in Court-_
houses and Alternative Sources," and gave a repeat performance on
this for the Jefferson County Genealogical Society. It was also my .
privilege to speak toa local senior citizens' group on family history
in general.
1I

We increased public awareness of our Society by having a booth at theLawrence Independence DaysCelebration and at the Maple Leaf Festival
in Baldwin. In addition, newspaper updates regarding our cemeterytombstone project continue to interest the public. The logo adopted
this year for wear onshir-ts or jackets has also created a visual
awareness of the Society's presence in Douglas County.
Thanks to our fine editor, we ~ere able to publish four excellent
issues of liThe Pioneer," and always on time! Our Newsletter staff
kept not only members, but also other societies, informed regarding
our activities.
The year also included a trip to Lecompton and Lane University, a
Christmas party and covered dish dinner, incorporation of the Society,
arrangements for bulk mailing, copying records, continuation of the
many facets- of the cemetery-tombstone project, work wi th the 1875
census, and development of five-generation charts.
A note of sadness invaded our IIgenealogy family" this year through
th: death of three members: Hazel Lee Simmons, Terry Koder, and
Ollve Stouppe. They- will be sorely missed by all of us.
My thanks to each of you for your part in our many achievements during
the past year, not the least of which-are the friendships which have
developed as we worked together. Let's continue the good work so that
the coming year will be even more rewarding.
Sincerely,

2

The following family history of the PAINTER family, written
by F-rances pAIN;TEe CAMPBELL and read at the fifth annual reunion of.
the PAINTER family at Lawrence, Kansas on 12 Sept 1926 was submitted
9Y William M. GUTHRIE, 1151.3 107th St. SW, Tacoma, WA ",,98498. "Thr:o.ugh
·:·nl:·s:mo.ther, Margaret Ruth PAIl~TER GUTHRIE. Mr. GUTHRI~ traces his
descent from: James Montrose 'P,AINTER, b. 25 Feb 187.3, Cass Co. 1'10
and Margaret KINDEB.KNECHT; Johl1' William PAINTER, b. 15 Mar 1846, 1'10
and Sarah Margaret LOWER; Samuel PAINTER, b •. 4 May 1816, d. 1906 KS
and Nancy VANKIRK; and Solomon PAINTER and Mary ADAMS.
OUR PAST
"Sometime in the early part of the Nineteenth Century, and
somewhere in the state of Kentucky, two weddings occurred at two
different times and places. Our interest still centers in those
weddings ~ -_T~e ,first was that of Solomon PAINTER and Mary ADAMS.
There were~'-rour children born to this couple: Samuel PAINTER,
Sophia PAINTER ~ Hannah PAINTER and Isabelle PAINTER.
Since there is no one here but us, I will say that Solomon
PAINTER belonged to the poorer' class of easy g01ng Kentucky far,~ers.
In these days I fear they might be classed as poor wh1tes or Hill
B11l1es. Sophia PAINTER.married Eldredge HUGHES and emigrated to
Missouri; Hannah PAINTER married Samuel HAMILTON and lived in
Indiana; Isabelle PAINTER married a deaf and dumb man named DaVid
ARNETT; and they also liv~d in Indiana. Some of the children of
those families came to Missouri after the Civil War. Whenever you
meet anyone wearing the naine of HUGHES, HAMILTON or ARNETT, go a
lit~le easy and treat them with consideration for they may be. a dear
relative.
.
The other wedding was that of Matthias VINKIRK or VANKIRK as it
was called in after years, and Elizabeth WILSON. She was a distant
relative of Daniel BQONE. Hence our fighting blood. They belonged
to the well-to-do farming class and--if you please--lived in a hewed, double log house and owned a very valuable negro named Dave.
Now please don't tell anyone but there were sixteen children in this
family. I am not sure whether there were five boys and eleven girls
or s1x boys and ten girls. Two of that large fanily are still
:.
living at this date; Mrs. Mary KIMES, age n1nety~three years, of'
Holton, Kansas and Mrs. Adelia STONER, age n1nety-one, of Youngstown
Illinois.
.
"
There were so many in the family they were not g1 ven double,'
names; or .In~yhap 1 t was not the custom then. The names of the boys

were: John. James. Jack. Henry and Matthlas. The 'girls ,names~::
were: Sally. Nancy. Deborah. Mary. Adella. Ann. Amella. Kltty Ann
and Rebecca. The two last mentloned dled ln early chl1dhood. Kltty
Ann dled from burns recelved by her clothlng catchlng flre. Two
others dled ln lnfancy. As thelr names are gone from my memory I
eannot tell thelr sex as ln those days, the names told the story.
Among the names, acqulred by the marrlage of the daughters,
we have HAWKINS, PAINTER, BECKNER, KIMES, STONER, PERRY and TRACY.
When you meet up wlth those names be on your guard and best behavlor
for reasons glven above. After the 'death of Matthlas VINKIRK the
famlly moved to Illlnols and nearly all except the PAINTERS grew
qulte well-to-do or wealthy.
And now comes a thlrd weddlng and the one ln whlch we are
vltally lnterested: That of Samuel PAINTER, only son of Solomon and
Mary PAINTER, and Nancy VINKIRK, second daughter of Matthlas and
Ellzabeth VINKIRK. Thls weddlng took place
the aforementloned,
hewed, double log house on the seventh of January, elghteen hundred
and forty ln the presence of three hundred guests.

In

The brlde had attalned the rlpe age of fourteen years, elght
and one-half months. The gro:om was twenty three. They began thelr
home llfe ln Kentucky; moved to Indlana and after one and one-half
years there wen~ to the then sparsely settled, wlld reglon of Ililnols.
They stayed there twenty-flve years and dld thelr share ln subdulng
and peopllng that part of our country., They then moved to Mlssourl
just after the Cl vl1 War and helped ln reconstruc.t16n:~of that state.
In elg~t~en seventy-slx they moved to Kansas where they spent the
remalnder of thelr 11ves. Samuel PAINTER dled at the age of elghtynlne years and elght months and Nancy PAINTER at the age of elghtyfour years and four months.
Now I hope there are no eaves droppers around for I must tell
the palnful .truth. There were twelve chlldren ln thls faml1y, four
boys and elght glrls. The eldest, ,James Henry PAINTER, who became
known ln adult 11fe as the Rev.J.H. PAINTER, was born ln Kentucky.
All the rest were born lz;t I ll,lnols~' , One, boy ,Thomas Albert, and
glrl, Adella Evellne, dled ln early chlldhood; whl1e an lnfant
daughter llvedbut a brlef two hours and dled wlthout recelvlng a
name.
James Henry PAINTER marrled Katharlne CARTER and they were the
parents of one boy and five girls. Four glrls are now 11vlng. For
hls second wlfe he marrled Mrs. Nannle R. PIPER, who survives hlm~
Mary Ellzabeth PAINTER marrled James PHILlIPS. She dled at the age
of sixteen leaving an infant daughter. She. is Dora King SPAWR and
is still livlng. John William PAINTER married Maggie LOWER. There .\'~r.---
were three boys and six glrls; three boys and four girls are living,
Eliza Jane PAINTER married Jackson BENNETT. Of their four sons, three
are living. George Washlngton PAINTER married Minnie B. DUNCAN.
Their family of four sons and one daughter are all living. Anna
Missouri PAINTER married Charles S. McARTHUR. One son and three
daughters and all li vlng. Sarah Frances PAINTER married Larkin
CAMPBELL. Their one daughter is living. Nancy· Etta PAINTER married

- --,

Feb 2. 1888 to J.W. REDDEN. Sec. State Board of Health.
Dear Slr,

i

I

. I

I regret that the reports of deaths recelved during the last year are so Incomplete as to render t~ose that 'have been reoelved practlcally worthless. By
comparing the burlal permits that were lssued by the olty olerk durlng the year
1886 wl th the reports of deaths made to thls office', I find the defect much
greater than I had supposed. Instead of an Improvement In the mortuary reports
durlng the year 1887. as was expected, I doubt whether SO per cent have been
reported. A few physlclans who are In actlve praotlce have entlrely Ignored the
law, and have not made· any reports of eIther deaths or birthsi while others have
made partlal reports. The reports of births and marriages are more complete than
durlng the prevlous year, yet they are not perfeot. The law requ1r1ng reports of
oontaglous and 1nfectious dlseases to be made to the County Health Offloer at onoe
by the physio1an In attendanoe. has lnno instance been observed.
.

I

-

Under these circumstances. I can only report my own observat10ns, and facts
derl ved from 1nqulry and oonstan't watohfulness. Measles. mumps and whooplng
cough have appeared In the oounty at different polnts. but In suoh a mlld form as
to requlre very llttle medloal attentlon. Intermlttent and remlttent fevers have
prevalled less than usual. We have had no small-pox or small-pox exoltement. hence
no vacclnatlng has been done. A few cases of scarlet fever have been reported.
but none fatal I It is posslble some or all may have been measles. Many Cases of
death, due to oonsumptlon, and oancer In Itsvarlous torms, have occurred; cases
of the latter have been unusually numerous •. Whlle we have not had any dlptheretio
epldemlc. It has appeared In dlfferent tamilies, in varIous parts of the county.
at varlous times durlng the year, wlth fatal results In numerous Instances. And
the fact that It has been more tatal In rural dlstrlcts than In the ctty. would
seem to Indl cate that its cause was due to impure water •••The Increasin~ frequency of diphtheria. with its tatal results. often strangling its vIct.ms in the
most horrId manner, should guarantee the most thorough inVestigatIon.
.
For nearly two years we have had more or lesstyphold fever'constantly;
durlng last. year It had almost entlrely abated, but early In July It appeared at
several polnts in the city of Lawrence, also in the rural distrIcts, and has prevailed wlth unusual fatality. During ~he present month, deaths due to this cause
have ooourred In Lawrence, and In at least flve townships outsIde the oity. Where
the water that was used for drinklng pUrposes was examined, it was found to be
impure. I. therefore reaffirm my views. which were expressed In former reports.
that the typhoid fever wh1ch has prevaIled in this oounty was due to the use ot
Impure water.
If there Is any movement In the dIrection of better sanitation ••• I shall be
glad to cast my mite In that directIon.

"A Kansas edltor. llke all other ·editors. we suppose, ls··gilad
occaslonally to get out of slght and hearlng of exchanges, types,
presses, composltors, devlls, and all, and enjoy a day amld other
scenes, even at the rlsk of belng called upon to make a speech or
respond to a toast. At least, such was our feeling, as, on last
S$.t.~day mornlng, we took a seat beslde the drl ver, on board a fourhonse wagon, containing the "Lawrence Cornet Band, lien route for
bLINTON. Our way was up the valley of the Wakarusa and, as usual,
as soon as we forgot our editorlal charge, we were longlng for a
quarter-section of that splendld_9.ottom sweeplng back on to the
upland just enough to glve us a 'good buildlng site. We were ready to
shout, "A farmer's life is the .l,.fe for me, sir." And then, as we
gazed upon those broad fertlle 'meadows, wlth the waving grass, we could
not help thlnking of our boyhood days, when, tolilng amld the hliis ,,."
and stumps, and rocks of " old Steuben," in New York, we spent tlme
and labor enough to have made a farm here as rlch and beautlful as
any New -York.
can boast.
-.The Valley of the Wakarusa resembles very much the far-famed ~
Valley of the Genesee, ln Western New York. It is full as wlde,' Ls
as good solI, and sweeps back wltha gentle ascent to the high-rolling prairie. Indeed, had it not been for the lack of large farmhouses and fenced flelds, we could easlly have lmagined ourself on
the Genesee flats below Genesco. We saw some flne flelds of corn
thls slde of CLINTON, some contalning we should judge. from twenty
to forty acres.
CLINTON, THE TOWN
Llke a great many other towns in Kansas, CLINTON 1s as yet, more
ideal tl1an actual. Tl'l~ town is laid off on a couple of quarter
sections of land adloining ~soUth~~,or_~tp.~e town of BLOOMINGTON). Some
. trouble or dispute about the tltle of the latter town, caused, I
-p~'lleve the laying out of CLINTON.
A well~filled store forms already
a part of the future village, and a steam mill is to be shortly erected.
The locatlon ls very pleasant. and is backed up by a f1ne... country.
The CELEBRATION was held in an adjolnlng grove. Abo'ut eleven
o'clock the processlon formed at the store aforesald, and 'Under
escort of the band, proceeded to the place of assembling. There was
a large attendance, some flfteen hundred, I should judge, and in all
sorts of v.ehicles, from good SUbstantial ox-teams to covered carrlages
and gay horses. The ladles and bables formed well on to half the
audlence.--a good.lndlcation thls of peace and prosperlty. Our Kansas
ladies have not yet learned that important lesson of arlstocratlc
high llfe. 'that lt is more proper for a lady to carry ln her arms a
nasty poodle-dog than a sweet -and smiling babe. May they never learn
