THE EARTHQUAKE.
Our city was the scene of the liveliest excitement, about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, that it has been our fortune to witness. There is no doubt
but this section was honored with a veritable, genuine, old-fashioned earthquake~one that would be a credit to localities a little closer to the quaky
regions of the globe.
'
We were pursuing our usual avocation, on the third story of the building,
everything quieter than usual, when suddenly, without warning, the building
connnenced shaking in a manner that plainly indicated something wrong. Our
. first impression was that the floor was giving way, and. accordingly we made a
hasty transit to the corridor at the head of the stairs. At this juncture
the compositors and printers came·rushing out of their rooms with an alacrity
that was surprising, and someone exclaimed that the building was falling.
The continued and increasing shaking of the whole building fully justified
that view, and we suddenly came to the conclusion that we wanted to get out,
and that badly, too. We started to go down stairs, but the thought struck

63

The Earthquake (cont.)
us that going down two long flights of stairs,·with a three-story brick
building traveling the same direction, was not quite the thing. In this
dilemma, one of the boys threw up the window opening on the roof of the
adjoining building, and if ever a set of fellows went through a window in
less time, we want them to come here and let us see them do it. We ran
to the cone of the roof, and found it was shaking as badly as the one left,
and accordingly ran to the next roof. It was jarring very perceptibly, and,
looking down in the street, we saw the whole city going through about the
same maneuver that we were at. Everyone was rushing out in the street,
and fellows engaged on the upper stories were coming down, six steps at
a jump, hair flying and eyes popped·out, in away that'showed something the
matter. As soon as we saw it was a general complaint we .felteasier, and
left our perch for the street. When we went down the whole city was out,
and everyone concurred that it was a serious shock. Everything of a movable
nature was rattled in an alarming manner, and in many places plastering was
cracked and fell from the walls. A large stone was loosened and fell from
the top of the Unitarian Church, and in many houses and stores small articles were thrown ,from the walls. There· is no denying that it was a rather
serious scene, and we saw a good many white faces on the street, after it
was over.
From the telegraph operator we learn it was felt at St. Jo., Leavenworth,
Wyandotte, and as far west as the railroad line extends. It lasted about
one and a half minutes, according to the report of persons who profess to
have timed it. There is no doubt but something. is wrong with the internal
arrangements of Mother Earth; but it is to be hoped sh~ will attempt to
rectify it in other sections, and not take her medicine in Kansas.
I

The current of the river was checked by the earthquake, causing it to
rise in waves of some height. A tub nearly full of water, in front of
Filley & DeWolf's store, was almost emptied by the shock.
·Nothing was talked of, or thought of, last evening, but the earthquake.
Everyone had his or her experience to relate, and the whole history of
earthquakes was overhauled, and a great many theories advanced, and speculations as to the cause, etc. One little boy gave as plausible a solution
as anyone that we heard. He gravely·informed a companion, who was evidently not so well posted, that he "guessed the earth had the bellyache." We
judge that boy will be a professor in a district school yet. We could find
no one who was frightened, or felt any fear at the time:of the occurrence.
One fellow was detailing his coolness, when another impolitely exclaimed, ;
"What in the h--l did you run down stairs so fast for, if you wasn't scared?"
"Run!" said our hero, "Why, I ran out to see what was the matter." That was
just the way with us~we simply went out at the window to see if anything
was up.

LOCAL MATTERS

Lawrence Business--One of our business men informs us, that on last Saturday, he counted the teams
in town and found one hundred and sixty-five in one street. If that don',t look as if Lawrence was
a business town, we have no conception of what would. It was no extraordinary occasion and scarcely
indicated a difference from the ordinary business of our place. Frequently citizens of other points
of the state are heard to express great surprise at these exhibitions of the active business enterprise of our beautiful city.

MAJOR DAVID STARR HOYT
THE HERALD OF FREEDOM, Lawrence, Saturday, June 27, 1857
Major HOYT, who was assassinated last summer, near Fort Saunders, and
hastily buried by his friends on Rock Creek eight miles from Lawrence, was
disinterred on Tuesday last, the 23rd and brought to this place and buried
with military honors.
The services were conducted in the Unitarian Church, with the choir
furnishing some beautiful music. The Rev. LOVEJOY delivered an oration,
and the Lawrence Brass Band closed with one of their mournful and solemn airs.
His remains were followed to the grave by the Oread Guards and by a
large concourse of citizens, accompanied by music from the Band.
He lies buried between the lamented ,BARBER and the brave SHOMBE, in the
Lawrence burying ground. So long as men love liberty and hate slavery, so
long as they venerate the brave and true, so long as they love principle
more than life, so long will they visit the graves of these martyrs to
liberty to strengthen their manhood, increase their courage, and kindle the
flame of patriotism by the memories of the glorious dead.
David Starr HOYT was born in Deerfield, Mass., in the year 1821. He
was therefore 35 years old, at the time of his death. He leaves behind an
orphan child, a daughter, aged six years. He served in Scott's army in
Mexico, and was in every battle from Vera Cruz to the City of Mexico. He
was considered a brave 'and valuable soldier. He was a scholar and, a man of
varied attainments. In 1852, he was with Stephen's surveying party, in
running out the Northern Pacific Railroad route, from Oregon to Wisconsin.
His services were highly appreciated and well rewarded by the Government.
In March, 1856, he came to Kansas with a quantity of Sharp's rifles,
which were taken from him at Lexington on the Missouri River. From that
time forward he served the cause of freedom faithfully and without interruption, until the time of his death.
In the summer of 1856, the Georgia guerilla companies concentrated
under Col. TREADWELL, and commenced building fortifications and furnishing
themselves with military stores on Washington Creek, ten miles southwest
of Lawrence, on the claim of a Mr. SAUNDERS.
Word went out from this post and others of a similar character that
all the Free-state men must leave the Territory or be killed, but that any
Free Mason might come in and he should be safe. The settlers became alarmed
at these frequent threats and applied to Major SEDGWICK, commander of the
U.S. dragoons at Lecompton to drive them away, or allow them to go do it.
Major SEDGWICK sent over'an officer with a company of soldiers, to examine
into it, and gather information. The officer reported that there was a
company of Southern men building a town and the logs they were hauling were
for cabins. New developments continued to alarm the inhabitants, and they
applied to the people of Lawrence for assistance. In order to determine
what course should be pursued, it became necessary to send a messenger to
Col. TREADWELL to ascertain what his objects and intentions were.
Major HOYT volunteered to go. Trusting to the honor of Col. TREADWELL
as a brother Mason, he expressed perfect confidence in the safety of the
enterprise. He left Lawrence in the afternoon of August 11, 1856, ent~rely
unarmed and stayed all night with a friend, (Augustus WATTLES), near Bloomington, and in the morning went over to Washington Creek to Saunders Fort.

87

Major David Starr HOYT (con't.)
He stayed there until after dinner, left, was followed out on the pral.rl.e
by three men and shot. Early next morning, word came in that a man was shot
near the Fort Saunders by the Georgians who were under Col. TREADWELL. Two
boys who were near the scene of action, witnessed the deed. As Major HOYT
did not return as was expected, his friends became painfully anxious for
his fate. A large company of Free State men gathered, and established a
camp at Dr. E.G. MACY's, on Rock Creek. They sent over a company of thirty
men, under the command of Capt. SHOMBE, to search for the body.
They called upon Col. TREADWELL for information as to where it was
buried, but could get none. After searching nearly all day without success,
they fortunately met a company of surveyors who had seen the grave, and
directed them to it. He was doubled up and thrown into a hole, his knees
projecting from the ground. They took him up,placed him in a wagon, and
then carried him to the camp., On being examined by the physicians, it was
discovered that he had been shot from behind, the fatal ball entering the
back of the head and passing out at the forehead. His face was thickly
covered with corrosive sublimate, so as to destroy his identity as soon
as possible, and probably in twelve hours more, it would have been destroyed.
A strong box was provided by 'Henry HIATT of Bloomington, in which his remains
were deposited, and he was temporarily buried ina beautiful grove on the
banks of Rock Creek. H~ has lain there in peace a little over ten months,
when our citizens have performed the last sad rite of burial, by consigning
him to his final resting place.
Note: It is not surprising that Henry HIATT would provide a burial box for
Major HOYT. Prior to his own death'in 1900 at the age of 84, he completed
a coffin for himself which he carved 'from a large log.

History of Eudora Area Churches.

'

,

Eudora has always had many different churches because it's early
settlers came from Europe where you find a church Or;t nearly every hil~ .
and down in the valley. They are very old and historlc churches. and:-.
well kept. Many have beautiful murals and paintings in them because the
neople could not read the Bible so the pictures told the Bible story
-from the Creation to the start of the early churches.
The Church was important to our European settlers as a vital part
of their religious and social life.Soon after Eudora was se·ttled in
1857 worship was started in hOmes as Missions, then in larger buildings
until the membership grew so a church building was built.
The first known church services in Eudora was before its founding
when the ~hawneeIndian Chief Paschal Fish,Jr. asked for a Mission
school here to provide schooling and religion for his Tribe and others
childrenoThe Wakarusa Shawnee Indian Methodist Mission was built at
about 1215 Elm Street.
The Mission was a two story,rough-hewn building of native lumber
with a thatched roof and Dr.Abram still was the Missionary in charge
of building the Mission school and director. He was a l1ethodist Minister
a medical doctor,teacher,carpenter and farmeroOne son,Dr.AoT.Still
practiced here and founded Osteopathy and another son,Dr. James still
practiced here many years at 806 Main St.The Still's gave land and.
helped to start Baker University.
Chief Fish,Jr. was also a licensed Minister by the Methodist Church
and helped with church services. The Mission started in 1851 and prob<~
ably closed in 1854 because of the slavery problem. Then Circuit Preachers continued to serve Eudora until the churches were established.
The next earliest church 1s the Clearfield Evangelical, now United
Methodist, which began as a Class Meeting by German Evangelicals in 1858
with a Circuit Rider Missionary Preacher, who sometimes could come only
once in three months o These preachers usually wore out several horses
each year and lived only at an average age of thirty-five. They often
slept on the prairie grass which was taller than their head when seatoo
on their horse. They had only a few trails, practicallY'no bridges and ;.
rode in the heat, dust, rain, storms, sleet, severe cold, snow and wind.
When the Preacher came to a certain area the word got around and
people came for miles around, walking,in lumber wagons, buggies and on
horsebackoThey brought a basket dinner and spent the entire day in
worship and Christian fellowshipoPeople from other denominations came
too as some preachers could only get around once in six weeks or SOo
Later when schools were built church worship was held in them
until churches could be erected.
Clearfield was first called Captain's Creek and was a part of the
Evangelical Mission Circuit of Franklin.Sermons were in German there
but communication was difficult because these German pioneers came
from different provinces in Germany and each province spoke German a
little differentlyo
In 1861 a Camp meeting was held on the Schendel and Heeder farms
and they lasted a we.ek and people lived in their wagons and they held
them when the moon was full.
In 1880 the Clearfield Church was built on land donated by George
Hausman. The head carpenter was William Deckwa who organized the men
and members did the building themselves. The original Chancel railing
is still in use in the present church. The men made the pews and a high
railing down the middle of the church to separate the men and women,a
common practice, also in the Quaker,Methodist and other early churches.
1~en the wind was strong, plaster fell on the heads of the worshippers until George Schattenberg put in a beautiful wooden ceiling.Kerosene lamps and wood burning stoves were used until 1907 or 8 0

Acetylane lights were~sed until 1917.
In 1945 the Evangelicals merged with the United Brethren to form
the Evangelical United Brethren Church and in 1968 merged with the
Hethodis t Church to form the United Hethodist Church.Clearfield E. u. B.
and Salem E.U.B. in Eudora shared the same pastor until 1966 and then
Clearfield was joined with Wordeno
Li ttle information is available about Harmony Free He thodis t Church
but a group started in 1856 from the Methodist Circuit rider days in
the Harmony schoolhouse six miles south and two and one half miles we$
of Eudora on the north side of the road until 1857 when a church was
built one halfmile east and one half mile south of the school on the
John Edmond Nichols farm.Mrs. Nichols funeral was tha last religious
service held in the building Aug.,I9I8.Rev. Lovejoy was a Methodist
Circuit Preacher but felt he had more "elbow room" with Free Hethodists
and was the minister there. This seemed to be an English speaking church.
Captain's Creek Methodist Church was organized ~n 1859 as a German
speaking Class Meeting on the Johnson,Douglas County line, southeast of
Eudora.Brother August Mecke served the church first,no regular minister was available ex cept Circuit preachers.During the Civil War,Eudora
and Captain's Cree1Cwere with Lawrence on a Circuit. This church was
often c alled"Little Blue" because the walls were painted blue inside
at one time. The building was erected in 1882 on land donated by the
Joe Millers. The land first belonged to a Shawnee Indian named Adams. He
sold it to Ed Knabe's father.Ed's widow married Joe Millero
Captain's Creek and Eudora Methodist were served by the same minister until 1955 when Eudora secured a full time pastor.VJhen Captain's
Creek disbanded a few years later some came to Eudora,Clearfield,Edg6.~
ton and Gardner. The building is on the Wesley Brecheisen farm and used
for storage.
.
The German Methodist Church began with Class Meetings in 1859 jointly with Captain's Creek and Lawrence Circuit. This group purchased the
home at 6th and Main Street in I870.Worship was on the second floor am
the minister lived downstairs.
In I88r a new frame church was built between eighth and ninth street
on Church Street on the west side while Rev.John Ehrsman was the minis~er
and in r884 a parsonage was built by Frank Brender but it burned in 1926.
This church was torn down and parts of it were used in the buildine of
the home at 825 Locust sto
Some of the r868 records'mention these people: C.Steinm.eyer,H.: . ..l,.r

The local minister H.Meyer was reminded to have a written report
of loc~l conditions of parsonage which had been built in Lawrence, papering etco and if he retracted what he said his license would be renewed.
A supervisory committee was appointed Aug.r868 of Three men to examine
the character of the minister and another committee of three men were
appointed to examine the minister's license to preach. He must have met
their requests as he was granted a new license.
In 1893 some members were: CoEberhardt~Bartz,Albrecht,Schafer,H.
Gabriel,BrinkmeyeriGus Rosenau,Henry Abels,Wuensch,Albert Baecker,W.
Gabriel,A. Gabriel,Walters,Kanzig,Havercamp,Bohnsack,Schutteo A~proval
for membership list was; Anna Gabriel,Bertha Knopp,Carry(Carrie) Abel,
and Brothe Laple is to be excused from attending because of his health,
and Brother Albrecht demanded his membership certificate or he would
withdraw.
In 1893 Lawrence was voted to be removed from the Circuit and Captain's Creek and Eudora would have alternate services in morning and
afternoon.Members sent flour and grain to western Kansas people because
of the drought.
In 1895 Freddie Trefz and George Broers Here -recommended for membsrship and a committee appointed to buy land to build a horse barn on.

91

In 1896 people approved for membership after the reEular six months
probation were; Joseph Broers,Frank Broers,Willie Spitzli,Eddie Bartz,
George Schafer,George Schneider,Lydia Albrecht,Lt1zie Eberhardt and
Tillie Ziesenis.
Hesper Friends Church(originally called Quakers) first met at the
home of Jonathan and Phebe Mendenhall in I86I,one mile east of Hespe~
In 1862 the group was granted a Preparative Meeting called Springfiel~
A meeting house twenty-four feet square was built of native lumber hauled from Leavenworth. (This are was mostly prairie bluestem grass in those
days;few treesL)
The first families besides the Hendenhalls were ;George T.Rogers,
William and Penelope Gardner,Winslow ,Margaret and Adela Davis,John :: _"
Hills ,most all from North Carolina. They were against slavery, military
service, oaths, lotteries and paying wages to n.nisters but even in early
years had women ministers. They spent much time in worship by silent
meditation.
In 1864 the Kansas Quarterly Meeting granted them a Monthly Neet ...~
ing.In 1871 members living east of Captain's Creek in Johnson County
was granted a Preparative Meeting and in 1872 named it Centre. In 1882
a new meeting house was built, a thirty by fifty foot building at Hesperr
and the name changed from Springfield to the name of the town, Hesper.
The Church started planning for an Academy and in 1884 started the
two year High School called Hesper Academy which served until Eudora
High School was built in I9I5.The Church also provided for a Cemetery B
near the Church. English was spoken at Hesper, which was three miles
south and one mile east of Eudora.
The Catholic Church at 300 east 9th Street is the oldest church
building in the area. The members organized in 1863 but they must have
worshipped together before then because we are told that a Jewish merchant(probably Asher and Cohn) let the Catholic congregation worship .
in their general store when a priest could come to town.(Eudora has
always been ecumenically minded'citizen's).We have also read that one
man in early days walked the seven miles to Lawrence to worship in a
Catholic serviceptaking all day for the trip and service.
The Catholic Church,Holy Family Church,building first was a 20X
48 ft. room on the southeast built in 1864 by the ~ople.John Kellerman owned land east of Eudora where the limestone rock was quarried.
Men who hau1ed the stones with horse and wagons were, Jacob Pabst,
Mike Branagan,John Welch and James Brazil.Masons were Casper Weber
and Franz Blechel and some good Lutherans, which was referring to the
St.paul Evangelical Church members. Other men helping were; Fred
Faerber(Eudora's first mayor),Anton Gufler,LW.Pfeif and Leo Vitt.
CarDenter's were,Joseph Hertz,Peter Ha~tig(Captain of the first group
of Germans to settle Eudora),and John Kellerman, who also made a beautiful Altar. They made the inside trim and furniture too.
There was not enough money to buy a bell,so all of Eudora's people
gave money to buy a bell to be rung at 7:00 a.m.,I2 noon and 6:00 p.m.
as it still is.It is now in front of the new ChurchoMr.Greiner rang it
for many years.
German and Latin was spoken in the church and it maintains a cemetery and for many years had a Parochial School for elementary students
and provided a home for the Sisters who taught the children •
. St. Paul Evangelical Church was organized Deco27,1868 by Rev.
Christian Haas under the auspices of the Evangelical &ynod of North

"A LETTER FROM KANWAKA"
Printed in The Kansas Weekly Gazette, Lawrence,

Ks~,

Dec. 22, 1882

If there is one thing more than another that Kanwaka has reason to be
proud of it is its ladies. For intellectuality, sociability and hospitality
we know that they are inferior to none, and for beauty we feel able to take
the cake. They have been carrying on for about two years a Literary Social,
which they have made a grand success, having not only added to their own
intellectual and .social powers, -but have every month opened their doors and
invited in their husbands, brothers and friends and given them a treat in
the way of some very interesting programs. Such a time was last Friday
night, when they met at the house of Mr. and Mrs. E.A. COLEMAN. The large
house of the host was full to overflowing of neighbors, and while the
children" occupied one room and enjoyed themselves in various games, the
elder people filled another and listened to the reading in outline of
Howell's "Chaucer Acquaintance," which was read by. Mrs. TOPPING, Mrs.
PIERSON and Miss Belle RICHARDSON. The close attention given to the readers
showed how their efforts were appreciated, and the look of rapt attention
and numerous sighs from the old men showed how their minds were drawn back
into the past, when they were young and full of sentiment, and how the book
brought vividly to their minds similar scenes in the past, in which they
formed a prominent part. After finishing that book, Mrs. CONANT read "A
Widow's Christmas," from Harper's, which was received with a great deal qf
feeling. Then there was a song by Miss Emma EVANS. Then Rollo DRAPER
recited a declamation, followed by a selection by Mr. CONANT. The literary
exercises then over, the president said they would have an hour of social
talk, which was filled in by friendly greetings among the many present,
with some more music, which they all joined in singing, Miss Ida EVANS
presiding at the organ. The next meeting is to be a Christmas meeting, in
two weeks, at Mr. E.A. COLEMAN's, for the children. In four weeks, at Mr.
RICHARDSON's. We left at ten o'clock, and the house was resounding with
merry laughter and pleasant voices. Many thanks to the ladies of Kanwaka.
May their society always remain on its pleasant and firm foundation.

Western Home Journal, May 25, 1882
Last Sabbath was a day of special interest to the people of Kanwaka.
Their large school-house was filled with an attentive audience, gathered
to participate in the organization of a union church. Prof. L.W. SPRING
preached an excellent and appropriate sermon, and Rev. H.E. WOODCOC
assisted in the organization services, after which the Lord's Supper was
observed. Twenty-three persons united with the church and others will
join at an early day. Rev. A.M. RICHARDSON, who has been preaching
there for some time, is pastor of the church. They hope to build a
house of worship in the near future.
