BEST TIME EVER
"PAST 75" PICNIC AT WOODLAND
PARK ENJOYED· BY A GREAT
MANY VISITORS.
Afternoon Was informaL
One Heat of a Horse Race Was Pulled Off, There Was Fiddling
and Singing and Visiting and Picture Taking.
It was thought the limit of enjoyment at Woodland park had been
reached with the children's picnic last week, but this proved not to be
the case. There was absolute joy with the "Past 75" picnic held there
yesterday afternoon. The joy of anticipation was as great as that of
realization, and the preparation·for the event impressed everyone with
the strong feature that made the occasion such a huge success--the perfect
delight of those who were invited to take part.
There wasn't much going on at the park~not nearly as much as there
will be next year when the· event is repeated--but the gathering under the
great old trees, with their carpets of splendid verdure, where the breezes
always blow, was enough to make the event enjoyable. The guests gathered
and visited; gathered even as the children, before the hour set; and
visited as hard as the children played. Then all gathered in the auditorium, where there was some old time fiddling by Captain J.M. SPENCER
that made others gathered suggest that a. sort of an old fiddlers program
would be an interesting feature another year; there was some singing, too,
led by Miss Olivia OLSSON.
Then the crowd separated and visited some more, the greater number
going to the race track seats to watch a heat or two of a horse race that
had been promised. There was an annoying wait, as the horse men were
quarreling among themselves about making the race, although they finally
emerged from the stables and drove a hap-hazard heat around the track.
Then all assembled for the photograph that was to be taken by Lawrence.
In the contest for the five-pound box of candy for the spryest of
the guests, age considered George KIMBALL and Mrs. Charles PEASE won.
There was lots of good lemonade for the visitors, who just had to walk
up and show their badges, and get all they wanted, whenever they wanted
it. It was a great afternoon, and was worth while.

FRANCISCO LIVERY SOLD
S.C. BYBEE of Garnett, Assumes.
Charge January 1.

The FRANCISCO livery barns at 808-10-12 Vermont street, one of the
largest of the kind in the city, was sold this morning to Mr. S.C. BYBEE
of Garnett, Kansas, who will assume charge as owner with the opening of
another year.
Negotiations for the sale of the property have been going on for some;
time, but always some hitch occurred until the final consummation of the
deal this morning. Mr. FRANCISCO has been in business several years and
has made a big success of it. Whehheassumed charge several years ago
the business was run down more or less, but he has built up and added
until now the barn and business is the largest of its kind in the city.
Mr. BYBEE, although not assuming absolute charge, will remain here until
January next, and will thoroughly familiarize himself with the business
and at the same time become acquainted with his Lawrence trade. He is a
married man with a family and will move here some time after the opening
of next year.
Mr. FRANCISCO has not definitely decided upon his future course of
action, but will remain here at least until after the barn has passed
out of his control .

From "Kansas Claims", House Reports, (36th Congress, 2nd Session)
Government Documents, Spencer Research Library, University
of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas.
"No. 54
Territory of Kansas, Douglas County, ss:
To the commissioner of claims under act of the
assembly of Kansas, approved February 7, 1859,
at Lawrence, March A.D. 1859.

legislative
in session

Your petitioner, E.A. COLEMAN, respectfully shows that
he is and since the 27th day of October, A.d. 1854, has been
a citizen of Douglas county and Terri tory of Kansas. That
during the troubles and disorder that prevailed in said Territory between the 1st day of November, 1855, and 1st day
of ' December, 1856, and in consequence thereof, he lost and
had stolen and taken ~way of his goods and chattels the property mentioned in the lahnexed schedule, at the time and in the
manner therein stated, which schedule is annexed to and made
a part of this petition, for which property he has never received any compensation whatever.
He further alleges that .about the 1st day of September,
and for several weeks thereafter, armed bands of men were
infesting said county and the neighborhood of petitioner,
and he, with others of his neighbors, was driven away from
his home and unable to save his crops, and thereby the crops
mentioned in said schedule were totally lost and destroyed.
He further alleges that his occupation at that time was
that of a teamster, which was entirely broken up by said loss
of his team, to his damage $50, as set forth in said schedule.
Wherefore he prays your honors to audit and cerfi fy said
losses, amounting to $574 in all, and the interest thereon
from said 1st day of September, A.D. 1856, as damages resulting
from said loss, and to award him certificate therefor.
E.A. COLEMAN
Sworn to and signed before me this 16th day of March, A. D.
1859.
SAMUEL A. KINGMAN, Commissioner"

Note: Supporting testimony from Ezekiel COLEMAN's son Charles
COLEMAN and his neighbor, George GILBERT are also'included
in this claim.

AN INFORMAL HISTORY OF SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 22,
WASHINGTON CREEK SCHOOL.
By
ELIZABETH K. DUNN
The first school building was a log cabin, in the 1850's. In 1860,
Darwin E. BOWEN received a patent from President James BUCHANAN and it was
from the southwest corner· of this quarter section that he and his wife,
Sarah A. BOWEN, on June 24, 1863, deeded an acre of land to District 22
to be used for school purposes. The school. board members at that time
were: Joseph LOVELACE, Sylvester CREEL, and Darwin E. BOWEN.
On this site a stone 'school house took the place of the old log one.
This school house served the district for 60 years. A frame building to
replace the stone building was built in 1898. The clerk's annual report
for the school year, 1897-1898, carried only the surnames of those of
school age: ATTIC, BOYD, BOWEN, BOND, CREEL~ DARNOLD, HASTIE, HYRE,
LONGANECKER, PARNERLL, ULRICH, SUTORS, MATNEY, DUNN, EVANS, MARKLEY,
McKAY, and HALVERT.
I, Elizabeth DUNN, attended Washington Creek School from 1916-1924.
Some of my teachers were Edith STRONG, Mary LANDON, Lola WILBUR, Mary
A. NORRIS, Mary Leone ISAACS, Alice McTAGGART. Some of the school board
members were: Hugo SCHELLHORN, O.P. McNEES, G.E. MARTIN, J.W. BANKS,
and D.E. BOND. Some of my classmates during those years were: Inez BOWEN,
Neal BANKS, Winston McNEES, Inez MOHLER, Earl MARTIN, Venita BOND, Esta
LONGANECKER. I thoroughly enjoyed school and looked forward each September
for the year to begin. I enjoyed all the programs, the pie suppers, the
last day of school picnics. I t was a happy time in my life.
The social life of this community, Washington Creek School, was always
an active one, with entire families involved in programs, parties, basket
lunches and dinners. The 300 volume library was also in constant use.
The disorganization of the district was June 24, 1959, when District
22 became part of the Wakarusa Valley District No. 98. The personal
property of the district was sold, the large bell becoming the property
of Mr. and Mrs. George BERG, and in the fall of 1984 was sold to Jane
WIGGINS. The school house burned after being a rental property for some
years.
Note: Part of this.information was' taken from: RURAL SCHOOLS AND SCHOOLHOUSES OF DOUGLAS COUNTY, KANSAS, by Goldie PIPER DANIELS.

start a creamery with Jess COLEMMAN's wind mill to furnish power;
Charley BROWN will put in a big store; Gus JOHNSON will run a blacksmith

Lawrence Daily Gazette
December 4, 1884
24 years ago Mr. Thaddeus FISH, now a resident of Grant township, in
this county, declared that he would not be shaved till a Democrat was
elected president of the United States. He has faithfully kept his pledge
till to-day, when he came into the city and indulged in the luxury of a
first-class shave at Frank WILLIARD's. Mr. FISH is 73 years of age, and
like millions of other good citizens, feels happy over the election of
CLEVELAND. Our friend, Ed~ CANOVAN, accompanied Mr. FISK in pursuit of
a good democratic shave, and was master of ceremonies.

Death of Jason MOORE

I

Mr. Jason MOORE, one of the oldest and most respected colored citizens
of Lawrence, died at his home at 285 Lake street, North Lawrence, yesterday
evening. Besides being a member of the North Lawrence Baptist church, Mr.
MOORE held a membership in several fraternal societies. The funeral notice
will be given later.
The Daily Gazette, Sept. 12, .1913
Fred LAPTAD A Winner
Fred LAPTAD was a winner at the Topeka state fair this week on the
yellow dent corn, raised this year on his Grant township farm. He got
several first prizes and made one of the best corn showings made at the
fair. It was a demonstration, too, that there is corn in Kansas this
year that is fine enough to take the blue ribbon prizes .at the fairs.

.' '.:' WINTER DIST. NO. 70.,
I

i The first known school in this community was held in a little two~room frame house, one room
above the other, located on the R. T. Richards farm, about one and three-fourths miles north of
Kanwaka Corner on U. S. Highway 40. This was not an organized school, and probably main'tained by subscriptions, with the top floor used to house the teacher. When no longer needed for a
;school, this little house was moved to a different location on the farm and used by the Richards as
. a dwelling, being enlarged as needs of the growtng family dictated. .
The actualorganiz.cition of District No. 70 as shown in the earliest district record, reads as
follows: "The legal voters of School District No. 70 of Douglas County, met, pursuant to notice
of the County Superintendent on the Sth day of June, 1869, and proceeded to organize by calling
, J. A. Kelly to the chair. On motion, R. T. Richards was elected director of said district, J. A.
: Kelly was elected clerk, and C. F. Deskins treasurer of said district. Meeting then adjourned."
M. S. Winter donated an acre of land on which a stone schoolhouse was built in 1870, and this
.!tale (stat~ent by_ Qlas. ~in!f!)'_d~t~ed tJ1e_!1_~J>~ "70" _gi_V~!O .Yt~ .4is~rkt.!- ______,
On June 3-, 1871, a special meeting voted to increase the size' of the-sehoolgrounds by buying i
. from Mr. Winter an additional three-fourths acre adjoining the acre already donated. This was
legalized when on July 11, 1871, Matthias S. Winter and Mary E. Winter, his wife, for the sum
of $15.00 gave a warranty deed to District No. 70, for this parcel of land located in the Southeast
, corner of theS.W. 1j4 of Sec. 13, T.12, R. 18, same being recorded the next day.
The first annual school meeting was held March 30, 1871, resulting in the election of S. M. ,
Sedgwick, director, M.S. Winter, clerk, and R.T. Richards, treasurer. School was to be held for
three months in the summer with a female teacher, and four months in the winter, sex of teacher
,optional with the board. A tax of three-eighths of one percent for the teacher, and one-eighth of
one percent for incidentals, was voted. The meeting also instructed the board that in hiring a
teacher, the contract should be that the teacher be obliged to stay with the children at recess and
,during intermission at noon.
Like many rural schools in early times, no well was put down for years after the schoolhouse was
: built, the older boys carrying drinking water from a spring across the road southeast of the school.
i Not until 1906 did the district dig a well on the grounds.
i The first term of school was held from May to July 21, 1871, with Alice Colman as teacher.
I The pupils were Nancy, Arminda and Mary BLANKENSHIP; Laura, Maggie and Elmer
IBURCH; Annie DONAHUE; Huldah, Susie, Lizzie and Willie DESKINS; Geo., Mildred and
I'Margaret ANDERSON; Mary, Annie and James HAMILTON; Ella HAGAN; Hattie and
,Joseph MONTGOMERY; Mary, Leora, Milton, Thomas and George WINTER; Perry and
lJ:larll WQIHHINGTON.

Since the summer term usually-taught onlygirls and small boys, it was customary to hire female
teachers. The winter term of four months accommodated the older boys and girls and such
younger ones as could battle the bad weather and roads. So for this, a male teacher was usually
, selected as being better able to cope with the rigors of the elements as well as the disciplinary
:.~
problems which frequently arose among the older boys.
The social side of life here was not neglected. The Community Oub held monthly meetings in
, the schoolhouse and provided entertainment in the form of dialogue:; and plays, followed by the
spelling bee which was inevitably featured.
.'
For this bee, two captains were selected, and they then proceeded to choose sides, selecting the
, best spellers first of course. This continued until all present had been chosen, old and young. As
, their names were called they took their places by their respective captains in tw(' lines on opposite
, sides of the room facing each other. The person to pronounce the words (usually the teacher)
, armed himself with a speller and the serious business of spelling down, began. When a speller
" misspelled a word he took his seat, until as the ranks thinned to two contestants, the mounting
tension could almost be sliced. Upon the ability of one of these two, rested the championship of
the evening.
! Tax-payers in the district in 1874, were Thos. Anderson, John Anderson, Wm. Anderson, Eli
,Barnes, Elias Chris, C.F. Deskins, Wm. Donahue, Daniel Freeman, Henry C. Howlett, ].S.
'Kelly, Wm. McCarty, R.T. Richards, Henry Rodgers, Julia B. Sumner, ].T. Cummings, M.S.
Winter, W.H.T. Wakefield and Chas. Worthington.
At this time schools were not graded except as pupils were grouped into primary, intermediate
and grammar grades.
I Teachers' records between the years 1877 and 1887 are missing, but from treasurer's books the
! names of these teachers are revealed: E.M. Emmett, Eliza Emmett, George Draper, S.E.
: Winrick, Alice Ingersoll, Dora Patten, Myra Fitz and C.R. Wenrich. '.
.
: Academic requirements for teaching in rural schools at that time were not high but one of the
prime requirements was a teacher's ability to "keep order," and sometimes this factor alone :
.
determined whether or not a teacher was hired or fired.

In 1885, Beattie Armstrong was paid $13.05 to point up the schoolhouse, which involved

• Other teachers in the late 1800's were Wm. Parsons, S.M. GaSton, Anna ~ars, Ella Flinn,
Florence Crowder, Maggie Gregory, Julia Hutt, Rose Heise, Olive Wisely, Kate Oark, Mary :
I Riddle, C. E. Houdyshell and Alma Nelson.
.
;
, In 1898 the district board consisted of M. R. Winter, Geo. T. Richards and Fred Deskins. The'
: teacher, Mr. E. E. Houdyshell, received a salary of $25.00 per month and total expenditure for;
: the school year was $224.21. Names of those of school age in 1898 were: Corbet and Shipman,
CARTER; Clarence, Abbie and Jake BROWN; Agnes KELLY; Chester PELSOR; Jack, Kate, i
: Maud, Fred and Mert READ; Raimer, Eva, Clark and Sadie RICHARDS; Arthur, Granville,'
, Henry and Leeman UNDERWOOD; Mark, Hazel, Bessie, Paul, Georgie and Maud WINTER. i
I For the first ten years of the twentieth century, the teachers were Lillie Gwinn, Camilla Nelson, '
, Sylva Kettering, Clara Colman, Alta Phillips, Mildred LaHue, and Emma Dews. Board members
, of 1910 were George Banks, Mrs. Lenora Colman and George Carter. Bertha Bailey taught the
i 26 pupils. During the term taught t?y Clara Colman, Mr. George Banks took a wagon-load of:
school children to Lawrence to the dedication of the water fountain at 9th and New Ha.nlpshire '
I Streets, by President Theodore Roosevelt; the same fountain, now in South Park in Lawrence. '
Teachers of the next decade were Bessie Jackson, Carrie Geelan, Marguerite Ice, Ada
Schroyer, Jeanne Winter, Lillian Stover, and Rebecca Miller who taught the term ending in
1920, with 26 pupils enrolled. During this period a number of improvements were made. The ,
: school-room was replastered, new weighted win~ws installed, a new hitchrack set up, a concrete.
,~~ and platform built in front of the schoolhouse, and a woodshed erected.

that most of the previous teachers may have been inexperienced. If such was the case, it might tie

in with the story in the next paragraph:."
In early years of the district a small woman had worked a bluff on the teachers to the point of
. once bringing a ball bat with her when visiting the school, in order to emphasize her ideas as to
, how the school should be conducted. There came a year finally, when things were to be different,
and matters were brought to a head when one of this parent's offspring defied the teaclierand
received a shaking therefor. This teacher, however, proved to be experienced and the game of .
I bluff was finished. Thereafter baseball bats were used only for the purpose originally intended.
Other improvements made during this period were an anteroom built on the front, with shelves
installed for dinner buckets, slate blackboards purchased, an eight-foot United States flag bought
and chains to replace the old ropes used for the swings. The term ending in 1920 was the first
: eight-months' one for this school. Board members were C. J. Banks, R. E. Schroyer and M.
Shelly.
Teachers of the 1920's were Lenora Schroyer, Christeen Schroyer, Lawrence Journey, Rose
Dews (Wymer), and Dorothy Elliott, whose monthly salary was $91.00 for teaching the 15
pupils. Board members were Newt. Hamlin, C. B. Winter and Willis Coleman. Total expenditure'
for the term was $1245.66.
' " , '
.
: The teachers in the 1930's were Dorothy Elliott, Kathryn McCaHrey; Mrs. Ruth Sa~er,
Alice Mitchell, Mary Sanford and Edna Reekie. Board members of 1940 were J. Elmer Shields, .
C. B. Winter and Willis R. Coleman. Twelve pupils were enrolled.
After 1940, Ruth Bertsinger, Roberta Swearing, Anna Hubbard, Vesta Bahnmaier and Emma
Petefish, brought teaching in Winter School to an end in the terin ending in 1946. The school

:!
When this was done, schoolhouse and grounds were turned over to the Winter Community I
Club which some years later distributed the equipment among its members and sold the building!
and grounds to Max McClure who owiled the surrounding farm. He, in turn,' finally sold the'
property to Jerry Smith, a car dealer in Kansas City who tried to preserve it 'as a: museum and
1 offered its use to Boy Scouts and other like groups. Eventually it fell a victim of vandals and decay
and now stands on the prairie a forlorn reminder of better days. Its large bell was broken and
destroyed when persons unknown attempted to steal it.

The Winter School Preservation Inc., a non-profit corporation
was recently formed by members of the WINTER family and friends to
renovate Winter School.
Sen. Wint WINTER, Jr., the great-great grandson of Mathias S.
and Mary E. WINTER who donated the land for the school was elected
president.
The gvoup decided to restore the school to its condition in
the 1920's~which means no running water and no electricity. The
work will probably start this fall and may take about a year to
complete.' The Quilding would be open by appointment to visitors
and to classes from area schools.

Death has entered our ranks and his icy touch has stopped the beating
of two hearts. Youth, beauty, wealth, power have naught to charm away his
coming. "With his sickle keen He reaps the bearded grain at a breath,
and the flowers that grow between."
Willie ALBRITON (colored), aged nine years and ten months, died of
La Grippe, on the morning of Feb. 16.
Willie was a bright and promising little boy, and his death, so
unexpected, seems sad and untimely. He was a pupil of the First Primary
where he will be greatly missed by his teacher and schoolmates.
Nellie HAWLEY, aged fourteen ,years, died Feb. 22, at 12 o'clock.
Nellie was a member of the Seventh Grade and was respected and loved by
teacher and schoolmates. Sad indeed is it to record this early passing
away of so beautiful and so promising a life. It "adds one more to the
inexplicable mysteries of Providence that perplex us here." No., we do
not, cannot understand His ways, for "Now we see as through a glass
darkly;" but there will come a time when it will be made plain to us,
and we will rejoice in the love ofa just God who doeth all things well.

IN MEMORY OF NELLIE HAWLEY
-Edith DIXONDear Nell, you have gone and left us,
And we all do miss you so;
But we hope sometime you will meet us,
Where we all now.hope to go.
And won't you be waiting, Nellie,
At the beautiful golden gates,
To welcome us into glory
Who once were your old schoolmates?
And we will ever remember
Theone with whom we played,
When the flowers were in the blossom,
And the grass was in the blade.
As we study and work at our lessons,
We think of you often, Nell,
And the days you assembled with us,
To learn to figure and spell.
You will see no more sorrow and trouble,
But ever with angels shall dwell,
While we are awaiting the morning
When we shall bid the world farewell.

MRS. JENKINS' NINETIETH BIRTHDAY
Spending her days in peaceful quiet in the town in which she witnessed the great tragedy of her life, is Mrs. Gaius JENKINS, the widow
of the man who was shot by James H. LANE, while Lawrence was still
scarcely a town, Mrs. JENKINS celebrated her ninetieth birthday last
Friday at her home at 1617 Kentucky street, where she lives with a
daughter, 'Mrs. M.E. WILDER. Mr. and Mrs. C.L. EDWARDS and Mrs. O.E.
LEARNARD were guests at a little dinner given in honor of the event and
hostess and guests, all of whom had suffered in the wild early days, had
a long talk, concerning the events of the stirring time, though it is now
far in the past as a human lifetime goes, but must always be remembered
as the most thrilling period of their lives, by those who experienced it.
Mrs. JENKINS came to Lawrence with her husband and family in 1855
and Gaius JENKINS homesteaded a quarter section of land, a part of which
is now west Lawrence. Later James H. LANE instituted a contest to the
title of the land and a feud grew up between him and JENKINS. This
went on until June 3, 1858, when LANE shot JENKINS as the latter was
trying to get water from a well on the land under dispute.
The killing of JENKINS by LANE aroused a great deal of feeling all
over the country, and this was particularly the case at Lawrence. The
killing was done in cold blood, as JENKINS'only object ori the premises
was to get water from the well which LANE claimed as his own. The
well stood near what is now the corner of Henry*and Illinois streets.
Although the well had been dug by JENKINS, a short time previous to the
killing LANE had put a padlock on the gate leading to the well, and
had forbidden JENKINS entry to the premises. The JENKINS family had
used water from a ravine for a few days, which had caused sickness in
the family. The head of the household finally went to the well, where
he was killed by LANE. The murderer was never punished for his crime
except by the ostracism of many who had been his friends.
Mrs. JENKINS has lived in Lawrence nearly all the time since the
day when she helped to carry the body of her husband back to the home.
It is now fifty-five years since the tragedy occurred, and Mrs. JENKINS,
one of the chief sufferers from it, is spending the evening of her days
in peace and tranquility.
