THE ACCIDENT AT CLINTON - 1888
Editor Tribune - Your account of the accident at Clinton on the
11 th inst. by which Charles CHRISTIAN lost his life. was not cor,~:>:
. rect in every particular. Charles was found by his brother, Leroy.
a few moments after the report of the revolver was heard, lying on
·his back, assisted by James JENNINGS and Ed PAYNE, they carr~ed the
wounded boy into his father's store.
By all the circumstandial evidence that can be gathered anctf;")
his many conflicting stories, it is quite evident that Willie "-v
MORRIS did the shooting, notwithstanding his denial thereof. First;
He said, when ask what became of the revolver. after the shooting;
"I threw the gun as far as I could see it". (Willie is known to
be a very bad boy, who has given his father a great deal of trouble)
When the teacher, S.B. KATHERMAN walked out the following morning
to see the spot where the~_boy was shot, there lay the revolver.
cocked. Mr. KATHERMAN [pfc, ked it up and gave it to Leroy to put
away.
We hope this sad affair maybe a lesson to the boys in this
community, and to all others who ,are \~andling these dangerous
weapons.

ELLA (REBER) GERSTENBERGER Memories
(As related for Eudora Heritage Book 1975)
My Grandfather, Joshua REBER and Grandmother, Esther
(Hollenbeck) REBER, were born in Hamburg, Pennsylvania.
They had eight sons and three daughters. They came to
Kansas in 1878 with two sons, Oscar and my father, Daniel,
,and one daughter, Alice (Mrs. Andrew KOHLER).
Grandfather was a Civil War Veteran and I have some of the
medals and brass buttons he wore on his uniforms.
I am
still using his walking cane.
Grandfather REBER built the front part of the house I now
live in; my father added to the house in later years.
(This was midway between 9th and 10th Street on Church
Street, west side of street). He had a blacksmith shop
where my garden is located. Occasionally we still find
square nails and bits of harness, etc., when the garden is
plowed.
He later moved his shop to 10th and Church Street,
where Mrs. Bill KELLY now lives. Grandfather sold the
blacksmith shop to Ed MISTELE.
The white lilac bush,
flowering almond and the Juneberry bush in my yard were
planted by my Grandmother REBER.
During part of my early life when I was in school, I stayed
with her and helped her cook for boarders.
She never
cooked on Sunday; always fixed the Sunday meals on
Saturday and kept them warm in her oven.
She would sit by
the front window in her rocking chair on Sundays and read
her Bible.
My father was first attracted to my mother at the wedding
of Minnie STROBEL, my mother's sister, and Peter NElS.
Daddy saw mother standing with the wedding party and
remarked that Louisa STROBEL was going to be his girl. My
older sister, Emma, was born in a hand-hewn log cabin.
Dad
later bought twelve acres, one fourth mile out of town
(east) on the Cemetery Road, where Archie and Frances
GOODGER now live.
(Archie razed the old house and built a
new one). Dad cut down walnut trees, built a home where I
was born. It had one large room downstairs and two rooms
upstairs.
In alter years he added to the north side of the
house.
The first well drilled, was on the west side of the
house, three hundred and twenty feet deep, which turned out
to be salt water.
Daddy built a smokehouse and did custom smoking. Fred
ARKLE, John MIENEKE and John EVERLEY helped Dad butcher
hogs in the lower yard.
The hogs would hand in the big
walnut tree overnight. The next day we cut up the meat and
rendered lard in a big kettle outdoors. That night we
stuffed sausage in cleaned hog intestines.
I would sit on

one end of the board that held the sausage machine and run
the press.
Our fruits and vegetables were dried on the porch roofs,
processed in the oven to kill germs and placed in gallon
jars. Green beans, cucumbers, etc. were salted down for
future use (oh, you salty stuffll).
Apple butter was made
in a big iron kettle over a yard fire; gallons and gallons
were made.
Poor Mom would sell some and always her baking
powder can over the cellar door got the tenth money for
her church.
Butter was churned in a wooden tub.
It was
sold for twenty cents a pound and delivered to customers.
Lots of ducks, geese, and chicken feathers went for the
"rich" guy's pillows. Our pillows had straw.
Flour sacks
were used for pillow slips and also underwear. Our
home-knit black stockings were itchy.
My mother was custodian at the church (Salem Evangelical)
for $15.00 per year, and my sister and I would take care of
the lamps. We used a little hand pump to pump air in the
gas lamps. We had a Church orchestra, the REBER-GOOD
Orchestra.
I played guitar, later played the old pump
organ in church and still later the piano. Ndw at age
eighty-seven I am still playing piano in church.
Sometime around 1900 there was news of an oil boom in
Oklahoma. A number of venturesome men from Eudora left to
stake out land for homesteading. My Dad covered a lumber
wagon with canvas, put straw in the bottom of the wagon,
fastened two long boxes by the end gate to feed the horse.
He tied a sack of corn under the wagon to feed the horses
along the way in case they could not find corn along the
way.
They packed blankets, food, coffee pot and tin cups
and cooked their meals along the way.
I recall that
Charles GABRIEL, Ed DIEDRICH and Gus FIEHLER went with Dad.
Dad found nothing satisfactory to homestead.
After graduating from Eudora High School, I worked in the
dry goods department of the PILLA Store for $3.00 per week
for five years, ignoring my desire to attend Emporia
College to become a teacher. While working there I recall
the Kaw Valley Bank was robbed; the robber was captured and
injured and brought back to the City Hall Jail.
(This jail
was in the basement of the old City Hall and located at 7th
and Main Street). After working hours, some of us from the
store viewed the young man through a window; he was a
handsome young man a I felt sorry for him and offered a
prayer.
Motor cars came into existence during my lifetime. We used
to run two blocks south to see the "Devil Wagons" go by at
ten miles per hours. We could hear them coming down the
road from one mile east, at Uncle Fritz's house. What an
agel
Every occupant was wrapped up so they ~ould not get

too much fresh air.
I have seen church programs change. Prayer meetings used to
be crowded and God was present, now people are afraid of
"prayer night".
It is called mid-week service, if there is
one. God is the same, but people are not.
I married Charles GERSTENBERGER, one of my high school
classmates, and we lived in Kansas City for about six
years, then moved to Prairie Center to manage the general
store there for about a year for Fred LOTZ, then back to
Eudora, (where we both were born).
I have lived in my
present home since 1919. We rented the present home from
my father, and later purchased it from him.
.
My Dad worked for many years for Delbert ADAMS at the
Eudora Mills, and was very fond of Mr. ADAMS. When our
oldest boy was born my Dad asked me what we named the boy,
I told him, "Orville Charles." He said, "I can't remember
a name like that, why don't you name him Delbert Charles
after Delbert ADAMS?" So he was named after Delbert ADAMS
and his father.

Note:
Charles GERSTENBERGER was employed by the Charles
PILLA Store until 1929 when it was sold and then he and his
wife opened the GERSTENBERGER Grocery in 1930 in Eudora,
starting at the old ROBINSON. Building, 731 Main Street. A
few years later they bought the BARTUSCH Building, 723 Main
Street, where the EISELE Tin Shop had been. They closed
their grocery in 1950. Both buildings have been razed.
Their children were: Delbert C., Lauretta and Arvon Gale
GERSTENBERGER.
They were musically talented.

LAWRENCE EVENING NEWS
DECEMBER 9, 1883
CENTRAL TELEPHONE COMPANY
Great Improvement and Increase in the Telephone Business of
Lawrence - Complete Directory or Exchange List
Yesterday afternoon we called at the headquarters of the
United Telephone Company, and were met with a friendly
greeting by Charles W. DAVIS, Manager, who proceeded in his
pleasant way to show us over the rooms and explain to us the
mysteries connected with the business. The office is on the
east side of Massachusetts Street, between Winthrop and
Henry, over Geo. A. HUNT's dry goods house, in the rear part
of the building. The operators' room is furnished in a real
comfortable and cozy manner, having more the appearance of an
elegant parlor than an office, - nicely carpeted, and walls
decorated with choice pictures.
Several choice plants are
scattered here and there and even a canary songster, to
warble his merry notes.
In the midst of all these pleasant
surroundings, gracefully sat Miss Lizzie KNIGHT, one of the
day operators, who is kept quite busy calling for connections
and sending messages over the wires, which she does with all
the ease and dignity of a little queen. Her voice is low,
pleasant and distinct, just suitable for a successful
operator, and the company is to be congratulated upon having
so competent an assistant. The other day operator, J.W.
OHRUM, seems to be a very pleasant young man, and well
qualified to fill the position in a satisfactory manner.
He
knows how to manipulate the board to perfection. H.E. WEBB,
the night operator, we found to be an agreeable and pleasant
young man, and although we did not hear him send any message
or manipulate the board, we know, by the way in which he
explained to us the manner in ~hich the connections are made
and sound transmitted across the wires, that he is master of
the situation and thoroughly competent for any emergency
.which might arise in connection with his part of the work.
The night operator's room is another cozy place, well
furnished with all necessary conveniences. Here an alarm
bell is attached at the head of the bed just over the ears of
the slumbering operators, which never fails to accomplish its
pur~ose.
From this apartment we enter the store room, where
instruments and all of the paraphernalia connected with the
business are kept.
It is indeed quite interesting and
instructive to look and study the mysterious mechanism of all
connected with the establishment; but space and time forbids
our entering into further details in regard to the office;
and we will follow the network of wire to the alley, back of
the building, where the main line runs north and south
through the city, with wires branching in all directions.
At present there are fifteen to twenty experienced telephone

men at work in the city rebuilding. The main trunk lines are
all being transfe·rred from the old poles to new 45 and 50
feet cedar ones at an expense of $3,000. And so it will be
with all lines throughout the city. The old ones will be
taken down, and new and more substantial ones constructed.
Work will not cease until everything is in first class order.
It has been through the untiring energies of the manager, Mr.
Chas. M. DAVIS that to-day Lawrence has its excellent
telephone system. When he assumed the duties of this
exchange in September last, the central office waS in a most
dilapidated condition and complaints were universal.
Following his arrival came the thorough overhauling of the
exchange. The old switch boards were fired and new western
electrics put in their stead. Next, over fifty old style
instruments were disposed of and in their places were put the
new "Gilliland," and to-day the reconstruction is under full
headway, which, when completed, will compare favorably with
any in the State. when Mr. DAVIS took charge of the
telephone interests of this city, sixty-four telephones were
in use, and those mostly in bad shape and out of repairs.
To-day there are seventy-six in use and fifteen additional'
ones contracted for.
The territorial net-work of wires extending to outside points
is certainly worthy of notice. Among the most important are
Kansas City, Topeka, Leavenworth, Atchison and st. Joseph, as
well as many smaller cities.
The central office is open day and night, Sunday included,
where the able manager or his kind and agreeable assistants
are always ready to wait on their subscribers or the public
in general.
For carrying on a five minutes' conversation with parties in
Topeka, Kansas City, Leavenworth, Atchison, St. Joseph,
Easton, wyandotte and Independence, Missouri, the reasonable
fee of 25 cents will be charged.
