Western Home Journal, 6 June 1872, p. 3.

"While the family of S.N. Walker, of Baldwin City, were attending Older's circus, on the afternoon of the 28th ult., their house
was entered through a back window, which had been left fastened down
and about $20. in greenbacks taken from a bureau drawer. There were
other valuables in the drawer which were not taken. Suspicion fastens
on two men lately released from jail in this city, who had been seen
lurking in the vicinity."
Note:
A burglary of the George Banks residence in Lawrence on the
same date was reported in the same newspaper .

"I's" and "J's"
Did you ever consider that a name or surname beginning with
an "I" or "J" may b e recorded under either letter ' in old records?
These letters were one and the same until well into the 1800's &
were used as either a vowel or sonsonant, according to Ruth Wilder
Sherman, editor of The American Genealogist. The German handwriting
of today uses the same character for either in capital letters,
though the lower case letters are different. (from Gen. Guild of
LaSalle Co. H~st. Soc.~ Newslett~r, 1984, via DuPage Co. (IL) Gen.

MARION TOWNSHIP
The following material on Lapeer School, Rock Creek School and
Bethul M. E. Sunday School was submitted by Letha (TRANSMEIER)
McCRARY. The originals belonged to her mother, Mabel (LAWSON)
Transmeier, and are now in the possession of Letha McCRAR1.
Mabil LAWSON changed schools during the 1910 school year so her
name appears on Rock Creek and Lapeer Schools "Souvenir" records
for that year.
Other members of Letha's family that attended Lapeer School were:
Ernest TRANSMEYER, her father, IVan TRANSMEYER, her uncle, Martha
TRANSMEYER, her aunt, and Esther OEHRLE, a cousin.
The teacher, Carrie VINCENT, boarded at Katherine and Lewis (Lou)
LAWSONT s home (Mable LAWSON's parents) during the school year.
(This was told to Letha by her mother, Mabil, who is still living
and will be 85 years old come 29 may 1988.)
The Rock Creek School is now being used as a house and the Lapeer
School is still standing but being used as a barn. The Bethul
M. E. Church was located south of Globe one (l) mile and is no
longer there.
