"Mr. Brown: I am highly pleased with THE KANSAS FARMER. regarding it as an excellent medium through which the farmers. stock raisers
and fruit growers of the st.ate can exchange opinions. and give for
their mutual benefit their individual experience and varied successes
in agricultural pursuits.
Having had an experience of over eight years in Douglas County. I
think I have learned to my satisfaction that fruit cannot be successfully raised on wet land or on a clay sub-soil withou~ underdraining
of subsoiling.
I have found also. that the rapid growth of summer.
the early frost of autumn. the warm days with sudden changes to
severe cold in winter. render it useless to attempt to cultivate the
tender varieties of apples and other fruits.
We must propagate the
hardy varieties only.
Wheat. oats. barley. hemp. cotton. tobacco. sorghum and potatoes
may be successfully raised in Kansas. but our strong hold is in grass
and corn. if we can secure by pasturing the grass that grows so luxur
antly on our prairies. and convert our bottom land into corn fi.slds
and meadows. we can then raise sufficient corn to fatten our hogs.
and stall-feed our cattle.
But in order to do this. we must have
good fences. whether we fence stock in or out. and the sooner we quit
dreaming about Shanghai fences or none at all. the better.
The
subject of fencing is of the highest importance to the farmers of
Kansas.
A stone fence is better and cheaper in the long run than any
other that can be made. but it requires green backs and muscular
power. which we cannot all command.
In making a wooden fence. good
·ten-foot rails are cheaper at sixty dollars. than common fencing
timber at thirty dollars per thousand. I see some otherwise sensible
men in making board fence. using black walnut for fence posts. which
out of ground last well. but will not last for posts. Others have a
superstitious notion of putting the top end in the ground.
I would
say put the largest and soundest end down without regard to which end
grew uppermost.
Next to a stone fence. is hedge made of Osage Orange. which has
proven to be hardy and of vigorous growth. and which can be made
without expending much money or hard labor. time and care being only
required.
[ have already said too much or treated on too many subjects. r
wou I d like. however •. to say a word to co[·.responden ts.
[f you ~H' ita
for the ~'armer and I hope yOU wi L1. let us know \~ho you il.re and where
you live.
It is a satisfaction when we hear from you. to know
whether you live in Maine. Florida or Kansas. and whether your experience is applicable to our climate or not.
Very respectfully.

WEAVER, an early town and community located one mile east
and a mile north of Eudora, Kansas, in the fartherest north-east
corner of Eudora Township is bounded on the west and north by
the Kansas River and on the east by Johnson County.
This is
fertile Kaw Valley bottom land which was orginally owned by the
Shawnee Indians.
The 1854 treaty of Congress gave to each eligible Indian man 200 acres of land and another 200 acres to his
wife and each child.
The area at that time was covered with
timber, but by 1865 most of the land had been sold to white men.
Some of the owners were: SAUER, LYKINS, SCHNEITTER, HEROLD and
BOSCHE.
The. land was cleared and laid out in farms.
The community was named for the WEAVER family.
Henry WEAVER came in
1865 from Columbiana County Ohio and purchased over 1000 acres
from the above named investors.
John WEAVER, youngest son of Henry, owned a general store,
was named Postmaster and was also appointed as Station Agent for
the Santa Fe Railroad (which runs through WEAVER).
Several
trains, both passenger and freight, would stop at the depot.
John also had a rock crushing business and furnished rock to
the railroad for track construction.
John and his wife, Aus~
tralia, deeded one acre of land near the home and store building
for a school which was built around 1894.
In 1900 there were
53 pupils.

HORROW's.

DATA OF FRIENDS (QUAKERS) MONTHLY MEETINGS
AT LAWRENCE, KANSAS

1869-1935
Data was extracted from Micro-film copies of
Monthly Meeting Minutes kept in the Archives of
Mid-America Yearly Meeting, reposing in the Friends
University Library~ Wichita, Kansas.
The film, in some cases, was not as clear as
desirable, the penmanship displayed differences in
skill and design and the reading not always above
question.
The spelling of names was not consistant but
from this point in time it is hazardous to guess
which is preferred so the original was copies as
faithfully as possible.
When the word "birth, born, died, death" is
the first word in the data column the date in the
date column is the birth or death date.
Otherwise
the date signifies the date of the entry in the
'minute book.
There were discrepancies as to date (generally
one month) as the Men's meeting and the Women's
meeting did not always deal with a given item at
the same time.
The extracting was limited to microfilmed data
so more work will need to be done in the futur~.
The minutes contain a wealth of information
and inspiration that is only hinted at in these abstracts.

Compiled by Wayne & Mary Catherine (MILLS) LEWIS of
Gove, Oklahoma
Submitted by Violet G. FLEMING of Eudora, Kansas

SOME FARM HISTORY
From LAWRENCE JOURNAL WORLD, 8 Dec 1939.
"The George and Hannah NOE farm of 80 acres waas purchased by a
land grant signed by President Pierce in June 1854. George NOE
was a civil war veteran • . The place now (1939) is occupied by
. David Noe a grandson of George NOE. A.G. NOE was the only child
of George and Hannah NOE who owns the place adjoining his father's
farm .... George and Hannah NOE. came to Kansas from Peoria, Ill."
"The 160 acres homesteaded by HOWARDS in 1860 was purchased by
L.D. HOWARD in 1870 (and) at his death was divided between his

Editor, THE PIONEER
Douglas County Genealogical Society
P. O. Box 3664
Lawrence, Kansas 66044
Dear Editor:
This letter will serve as a clarification and elaboration on
a small bit of material that appeared in THE PIONEER, Volume
XIV, Issue #4 Summer 1986.
On Page 162 there appear marriage records from Douglas County.
Toward the bottom of the page there is an entry that reads
SALAVUIEL(?), John, of this· city and Jemima Correll of Wakarusa
Tmmship. . . . . . . .
On Page 163 there is the Bride I s Index, where
this couple is shown as CORNELL, Jemima and SALVCIEL, John.
These surnames should be SALATHIEL and COREL.
Jemimah Corel Salathiel
Corel La Hay Dobbins.

~.,as

the niece of my great-grandma, Nancy

As to John Salathiel,
Brown, edited by F.

Brown,
Villard
Bro~vn ' s

In the History of Hontgomery County, Kansas, which \-las published
in 1903, there is an biography on Thomas Salathiel, son of this
John Salathiel. In part it reads,
His father, John Salathiel, of Independence, pioneered
to the Territory of Kansas, in 1854, having brought
his mother out to the new town of Lawr'ence, in that
year of the separation of Kansas and Nebraska, and
the formation of the latter into a territory, with
its present boundaries.
Mr.· Salathiel, Sr. was a
resident of Lawrence till his mother's death, directly
after which he settled on a 'farm, some ten miles from
the town, where he was living during the Quantrell
Raid.
He
joined
Plumb's
company
for
the
"hoped- they-wouldn ' t- find- 'em" pursui t of the guerri lla
band, and this and the volunteer service he rendered,
when Price threatened Kansas, was all the military
service he rendered during the Civil war.

-2-

John Salathiel was born April 30, 1836 in Lawrence
county, Ohio, on the townsi te of Ironton
. He was
one of the early merchant's in La\'lrence, but in 1860,
became a farmer in Douglas county, and purchased' a
cla~m,
on Sycamore creek,
two miles north of the
historic, but eccentric, tmm of Radical.
He remained
a farmer unti I 1880, when he came to Independence and
engaged in the grocery business with which he has since
been connected.
He married, in Lawrence, Kansas, in
1858, Jemimah Corel, a daughter of Henry Corel, who
settled just east of Lawrence, in an early day; a part
of the old farm being now the city's beautiful cemetery.
Mr. Corel was a settler from West Virginia but both
he and his wife died early, thus orphaning a family
of eight young children~" ,
Hy information on Jemimah Corel primarily comes from the census
records and my reconstruction of the Corel family.
She was the
oldest daughter of Henry and' Nancy Matney (Matiney) Corel.
A
typescript family history belonging to Joe Cullen of RockliQ,
California, says that Henry and Nancy Corel and their oldest child,
William, died in an 1855 measles epidemic that hit Lawrence in
1855, and these three were buried on Mt. Oread.
It is of interest
to note that Jemimah Corel Salathiel is also listed in the appendix
of Joanna Stratton's Pioneer Women, Voices from the Kansas Frontier,
although nothing directly attributed to her is quoted in that
book.
I am hopeful that these corrections get entered in your
quarterly. Please feel free to use or edit what you wish.
Cordially,

,
