1B63

This year marks the 125th anniversary of a
murderous raid on Lawrence by a group of'
guerillas led by William Clarke Quantrill. On!
the morning of August 21, 1863 Quantrill and
his band of raiders,
numbering about threehundred, entered Lawrence and murdered
an
estimated 150 men--wounding thirty others. Not:
only did the band kill nearly every man they
found but they burned many homes and much of
the business district of the town.

.

For years there had been violent confrontations
between the "jayhawkers" and the "bushwacker's
--betweenproslavery and abolishionists. So a
raid by this pro-slavery group against the
"free-state"
town
of
Lawrence
was
not
alt~gether unexpected.
In fact,
in the three
months prior to the raid the city had been on
the alert for just such an attack. By August
21st,
however,
the town had relaxed it's . William Clarke Quantrill
vigilance and was unprepared to defend· itself Was Charlie Hart When He

when the raiders entered Lawrence about dawn •

Quantr ill was no stranger to Lawrence. A few years earl ier he had
lived there under the name of "Charlie Hart." Most residents of
the town knew him as a school teacher, but he apparently spent
some of his time as a kind of "double agent" who freed slaves in
Missouri and elsewhere, took them to an abolishionist house in
the Lawrence area and then got a bounty by telling the proslavery authorities where to find them.
With inside knowledge of the political leanings of the men of
Lawrence, Quantrill had instructed his men before they entered
town exactly which men he wanted killed.
But the drunken raiders
often shot indiscriminately despite the plea~ of the victims and
their families.
After the dead were buried, ·the citizens of Lawrence began rebuilding their town. Today Lawrence is a prosperous and thriving
city. Few realize that only 125 years ago the entire town lay in
ashes.
Because the people of Lawrence would not give in to their
grief, but instead began the difficult job of rebuilding their
town,
tribute was paid to them a few years ago when a city seal
was adopted in which a phoenix is shown rising up from·the ashes.
Many stories of the atrocities of the raid and of the herorism of
the victims and their families have been passed down in writing.
On the following page is one such story--that of Rev. Hugh Fisher
who was saved from the guerillas by his wife's ingenUity.

" ... After some preliminary remarks,
Dr. Fisher
began the story.
He said:
'I was always an
anti-slavery man of the most 'anti' kind,
and
after I moved to Kansas, without any prominence
having been given to my sentiments by myself, I
found myself the object of the most
vindictive
hatred of the pro-slavery party of the region
where I resided.
My life was unsuccessfully

When the war' brclke ':'Ut I
went as a chaplain.
Most of the male members
of my church went to the war, and I went as one
of ,Jim. Lane's chaplains.
The news clf my
connection with the army,
and of my being put

Kansas,
got abroad,
and the rebels hated me worse than
ever.
They got my photograph and distributed it throughout the country,
and it was fixed among them that I was to be shot whenever met.
armory,
and there was an understanding with the farmers of the
surrounding country that upon the ringing of an alarm they should
come in to defend the town,
but the coming of Quantrell and his
men was a complete surprise.
When the alarm was rung the arsenal

I was in bed,
and heard,
about 3 o'clock in ·the morning, horses
galloping ~ery rapidly away,
and woke my wife,
telling her that
it was singular that horses should be galloping so fast so early
in the morning;
but she said it was some farmers who had been
into a railroad meeting the even ing before,
and were hurrying
back to their work. We lay·and talked for some time. The children
were going on that morning to get some grapes and my wife thought
she would call them earlier than usual,
and herein,
brethren, I
see the hand of F'rclvidence.
It
was not yet daylight,
but day
was dawning.
Having called the

and

rebels are in tClwn.'
I said
that
could
not
be;
but,
neverless I sprang from the bed
and ran to the door.
There they were just acrbss the green and jus~·then they shot the
United Brethren preacher as he was milking his cow in his barnyard. I rushed b~ck into the house; my wife caught up her babe; I
h~ve four boys;
one was on my wife's breast,
another was by her

rushed up the lot in which our house stood.
Then I left my wife
and with the two oldest boys ran up the hill,
but something
seemed to tell me that I was running away fro~ safety.
So I told
the boys to rwn on and I would go back to mother .•• My boys
separated, the oldest getting with a neighbor's boy,
Robert
Winston,
and while the two were running for life,
the soldiers
saw them and fired a volley,
killing poor Bobby and frightening
my boy almost to death.
He ran off and hid among some graves in
the grave yard. My younger son ran off on the prairie.
In
fixing my cellar,
I had thrown up a bank of earth near the
entrance and
I crept down there and laid myself between the
mounds of earth and the wall in such a way that the earth would
partly screen me.
I lay up close to the kitchen door.
I had not
been there lonq when four of Quantreli's men rode up to the house
and demanded admittance.
My wife went to the front door and let
them in.
They demanded whether I was not in the house or in the
cellar.
She 'replied:
'My husband and two older boys ran off as
soon as the fighting began.' The leader swor~ that he knew I was
in the cellar. My wife replied that she had two young children by
her,
and that she did not want any more oaths uttered before
them.
'You have doubted my word,' she replied; 'you can look for
yourselves.' I lay so near the floor that I could hear every word
that was said. The men called for a candle.

.!: ..

My wife replied that we did not burn candles.
Then they wanted a
lantern,
but she said we hadn't any.
They asked then,
with an
oath,
what we did
for a light.
She replied that
we ~urned
kerosene in a lamp.
then they called for a lamp, and my wife had
to get it, but the men in their eagerness to light it, turned the'
wick down into the oil.
Failing to light
it themselves,
they
called upon my wife to light it.
'Why,
you have ruined the lamp,' said she,
'It <an't be lighted
with the wick down in the oil~"Haven't you another lamp?'
said
they. 'Yes, there's one upstairs,'said she, and they then ordered
her
to g.:) and get it.
'Gentlemen,' said she,
, I can't do it,
your
rudeness has so frightened me that I can scarcely hold my
babe.'
One of the men then offered to hold it for her,
and took
it from her arms. My poor wife then
went and got the lamp,
which they
lighted
and
started on
their
search.
They all ":c,,:ked
their
revolvers and passed the word to
kill at sight,
and started for the
I
cellar.
I laid myself as flat as I
could be, and turned my fac~ to the
wall,
for
I
knew my face waas
thinnest from ear to ear. The light
came to the door.
I tell you brethren
I just quit living ••• I stood then before the
judgement seat.
I was a dead man.
My heart ceased to beat.
I
already stood before my Judge.
Brethren,
what could I do,
but
just trust myself to the Lord?

5

The man who carried the light was tall and providentially stooped
so low in entering the cellar, that the light shining against the
bank of earth threw a shadow ov~r me.
They searched the cellar,
but did not find me ••• My wife afterwards told me that when the
men went down cellar,
she took her babe and went into the parlor
and stood there holding her hand against one ear and her babe
against the other expecting every moment to hear the report of
the revolvers in the cellar, anouncing the death of her husb~nd.
The soldiers set fire to the house in several places and leaving
one of their
number to prevent my wife from putting it out,
departed .•• My wife then came to me and asked me whether it was
all
right between me and God.
'I am afraid they will come back
and kill you yet,
and it will be the greatest comfort to know
that you felt prepared t.:. die.' I tc.ld her that I was prepared
to die.
Telling me to pray,
she left me. It was not long before
another
party
of
Quantrell's men came and
in
drunken
tones •.. demanded to know whether I was in the house.
'Do you suppose,'said my wife, 'that he would stay there and you
shooting and burning all ~ver town? No; he left this morning as
aoon as the firing ~ommenced and unless some of you have shot him
and killed him outside,
he is safe.
Some of your men were here
this morning and searched the house.
However,
you may look for
yoursel ves. '
In this she bluffed them. They set fire to the house and left one
who drew his revolver on my wife and said he would kill
her
if
she tried to put it out.
He stayed until the house was so far
consumed that there was.no possibility of saving it.
My wife pulled up a carpet, and in taking it to the yard, dropped
~t
accidentally by the door.
My wife was afraid and so was I,
that
I would ·be burned alive,
for I had no thought of doing
anything but what my wife told me.
The floor was on
fire almost
over me and the flames were
" 'r rl. e

creeping nearer.
My wife stood
and
threw

when
a
neighbor,
;

Catholic woman said: 'Wh~, Mrs.
a.rld.
Fisher,
what are you doing?
What good will it be to save
that floor? Besides, you can't
save it.'

~-----------------------------I

'I don't care what good it will do' replied my wife,
'I am going
to keep on wetting that floor.' But finally,
when she saw she
could not save it, she asked the neighbor whether she could keep
a secret.
She then swore her by the Virgin Mary never to reveal
it. 'toJell, then,' said my wife, 'my husband is under that flc.c.r.'
The soldiers were still everywhere,
shooting and burning and the
air was filled with the shrieks of wounded and dying men,
the

wailings of widows and orphans and the sound of
falling
buildings.
My wife then c~lled me to come out and threw a dress
over my shoulder.
The two women picked up the carpet and
I
crawled under it between them and so we proceeded to a small bush
about four feet high in the yard.
There my wife saw four soldiers ready to fire.
They were not a
hundred yards off ••• l slunk under the bush and they threw the
c ar ~)f.~t over me.
'Save the chairs!
cried my wife;
and they rushed to where the
chairs were piled close to the burnin~ building and ran with them
and
flung them carelessly upon me and piled up all
that was
saved of our household goods about me.
The soldiers evidently
thought the pile only a lot of household furniiture, and left it
unmolested.
I stayed there till two hours after they left and
then gathered my wife and my four children--for the two boys had
come back--and in the garden we knelt and thanked God
for
deliverance. Brethren you don't know what i t i s to be thankful.'

MRS. RANKIN's HUSBAND SHOT BY RAIDERS

Mrs. Mary (CARPENTER) RANKIN of Quenemo, Kansas wrote in 1913:
"I.-Je were living on F.:hode Island StY·eet in a hc.use ,just
finished
and had been married ten months.
When two of the raiders called
at
our
house and saw my husband,
they fired a shot at him and
after his race through the yard they fired a second shot. Of what
passed around us I know and remember nothing,
until I sat beside
the body of my husband and saw him in a rude coffin and laid away
in a corner of our yard."

"My husband was nClt ki 11 ed,

our home was not burned.
I saw Mr.

to the ravine.
He reached it and saved his life.
I had to warn

I can hear the pounding of

Women Bring I'n Mimi tion Supply'
Ingenuity

Outwits·Pto~Slavery'Guards'

Surrounding Lawrence

AUtho,ri ties on the histo'ry of Do-uglas county state that four attempts
were made by men to get wOlrd ta' Cawrence warning them of the coming of Qu:an~
trill and all~ of those attempts failed. whether by degree olf fate or by eager;..
ness which faiied to· take full accoun:t of' ciicumstanc.es that might arise.
The atiempts may have failed becau'se the pioneer women were' not called
on to use their ingenuity and initative, ~o displayed during several incidents'
in saving lives of men and their homes' during the Quantrill'. Raid, and the bo-rder wars.
Such ingenuity furnished pO'\II<ier and sho,t for the defenders of Lawrence',
when in December olf 1855, hordes of Missouri ans were camped two or three miles
from Lawrence! and had pickets around the cHy. Every man was needed fo·r the
defense of the city against an attacIc expe~ted hourly. The bravery o-f two
women allowed every man to be used fo·r the defense and at the same time the
necessary ammuni tion was pro·vided;
.
Mrs. S~ N~ Woods and Mrs. Loi s H~ Brown vlere the women who, secured the'
ammuni tion from the farm of Mrs .• Brown' s· father, and from the home o·f Maj or
Abbot who had powder', shot and Sharps 'rifles, sent by friends in New York and
Bo·ston buried in a trunk on his .claim..
.
On December 8, 1855-, Mrs. Bro.trn was calli ng at the home olf Mrs.
N'. Wood-.
General lane came in and said. "I do no·t know what we shall do _. we have no
ammuni tion no:t even enough to l.t1tcd(e) a show o-f defense.'"
.
Mrs. Brown said that her father had a bag of powder out on his farm and
that she would go after it and asked Mrs. Woods to'gol with her. Mrs. Woods
consented and arrangements were made to go the next morning. Jt large work
basket,. a medicinal book and knitting were taken by Mrs. Brown.
Sam Gleason, the fathero-f Mrs. Brown, li ved ~everal miles south o-f Lawrence at Mud Springs on the Santa Fe' ro'ad. When Mrs. Brown reached the home
oJ Mrs. Woods: she found Captain J. E. Stewart who lived a mile ot! the other'
side of the Wakarusa getting ready to go- out to_ bring some ammuni tion buried
there. brought into the territo:ry by Mr. Abott with Sharps rifles secured by
friends in Boston and New yo:rk.
Captain Steward and (blank) have some twelve or fourteen men to gO with
him. He had what was then known as a cracky wagon. General Lane coming up at
the time. Mrs. Brown said:: "It will not be necessary for Mrs. Woods and me to
gOI for the powder at father's."- General Lane said:: ''No, You are going ...·
Turning .to Captain Steward he said: "By what authority do- you take these
men out ()if this place just at this time when tile are expecting an attack every
hour. These women will bring it safer than you can wi th all these men.'"
Captain Stewart helped them in and gave Mrs. Brown the reins. The guard'
accompanied them to the edge of town and turned back •
. The women drove out to Blanton's Bridge. After passing that a mile they
notIced two; men or scouts watching them closely. The halter came down and .Mrs ~
Brown got up to' put i t up'~ The men turned olff and paid no furthe·r' attention)
to the. women. A mile or two further on they met two men on foot. Mrs .. Brown
turned to them and inquired how far it. was to· a Mr. Bayes', a pro-slavery
neighbor.
After getting the direction the women drove on. Later they stopped to
pick up a whiskey flask which they thought might be well to have fi lled with
milk •. Soon after arriving at the home of Mrs. Brown's father, Mrs. Woods and
Mrs. Bro~1In h?d dinner •. Two pillow slips were borrowed and a small keg of powder emptIed Into them. The women arranged them under their dresses like bustles'.

Fr'.l'il tiw Gleason home they drove to Mr. Abbott's where the ammunition was
buried wi th a half kC0 of powder in an oid trunk. This was fldJustcd wi th the
help of Mrs. Abbott, Mrs. W"ods tying some of i't around her person.
The caps, c:1rtridges, bullet molds and gun wipers, the women put up their
sleeves and in their pockets. The bflrs of lead were stood up in their stockings.
Three packages the women could not take were given to Howard Dickson, a boy,
wh,) W(lS going to Lawrence to help in the erection of fortifications. He was
driving a pair of oxen which were to be used in throwing up the earthworks.
O'l'Iino tn the heavy weight of the powder nnd lead the women could not get
into the buggy_ Mrs. Abhott and Dickson assisted them.
After crossing the Wakarusa they noticed that they were closely watched.
"There, ~lrs. Woods, they are coming," Mrs. Brown said.
A man stopped them. "Excuse me, ladies, we thought you were men. We have
orders to let no man pass this road to Lawrence."
The women ~'rove on slowly.
In back rode a man partly di smounted, wi th one foot on the sti rrup, ready
to fi re on the women. The man comi ng to the buggy and seeing nr)thinfl suspicious,· if a milk bottle and a work basket could seem suspicious, went back
to a cornpnnion do\'m the road then back to the boy dri ving the oxen. They
seorched him and found nothing.
.
~lrs. Brown drove her hnrse slowly and feigned indifference, then drove
rapidly.
They found the men waiting anxiously for them. Cheer after cheer greeted
the women as they drove up. It was then that they learned that Thomas Barber
had been shot while attempting to get out of his home, some -five or six miles
from Lawrence. He was brouqht in and laid out in the Free-state IIotel, full
of life and hope on the benutiful morning when he left.
The wind blew a perfect gale from the north before'morning and blew down
the tents of the prO-Slavery men so they struck their tents and left.

JIM LANE SAVED BY DISGUISE

Mrs.
D.L.
KRETSINGER,
daughter of Wm.
memories of Quantrill's Raid:

BRASS wrote one of

her

"I had gc.ne to Lawrence that week to attend schcII::.I, bc,ardi ng wi th
John SHIMMONS and rooming with his daughter,
Nellie YOUNG.
Jim
LANE came over.
He hurriedly put on one of my dresses and a sun
bonnet and assisted us in carrying
food out of the house. He was
not recognized as a boy and I have always felt that his disguise
saved his life.
I think I can safely say that I also saved a Mr.
EATON's life."

DATA OF FRIENDS (QUAKERS) MONTHLY MEETINGS
AT LAWRENCE, KANSAS
(Continued from Vol. XI, No.4)

1869-1935
Data was extracted from Micro-film copies of
Monthly Meeting Minutes kept in the Archives of
Mid-America Yearly Meeting, reposing in the Friends
University Library~ Wichita, Kansas.
The film, in some cases, was not as clear as
desirable, the penmanship displayed differences in
skill and design and the reading not always above
question.

~:

The spelling of names was not consistant but
from this point in time it is hazardous to guess
which is preferred 50 the original was copies as
faithfully as possible.
When the word "birth, born, died, death" is
the first word in the data column the date in the
date column is the birth or death date.
Otherwise
the date signifies the date of the entry in the
minute book.

'.'

There were discrepancies as to date (generally
one month) as the Men's meeting and the Women's
meeting did not always deal with a given item at
the same time.
The extracting was limited to microfilmed data
so more work will need to be done in the future.
The minutes contairi a wealth of information
and inspiration that is only hinted at in these abstracts.

Compiled by Wayne & Mary Catherine (MILLS) LEWIS of
Gove, Oklahoma
Submitted by Violet G. FLEMING of Eudora, Kansas

BRAYE WQMEN SAVE MR. WINCHELL EROM RAIDERS
rrom: ~ ~i~~2~~

2i

bs~~~n~~,

by Rev. Richard Cordley.

page 225-226.
"The women of Lawrence always proved themselves heroes when the
occasion presented itself." Rev. Cordley told of the foll,:;)wing
incident:
" ••• Mr. WINCHELL ••• ran into the house of Dr. Charles REYNOLDS,
formerly rector of the Episcopal church. The:doctor was away from
home, a chaplain in the army. Mrs. Reynold~ and two other ladies
~ere
in the house. They at once set
their wits at work to
devise a plan for saving Mr. Winchell in case the raiders came to
the house. They finally hit upon a plan which proved successful.
Getting a razor they shaved off the man's whiskers, put a lady's
wrapper over him, and tied an old woman's cap on his head. They
then placed him in an invalid chair with a stand beside it,
covered with cups and spoons and medicine bottles. One of the
ladies sat by his side fanning him. This was to be their 'Aunt
Betsie,' very ill.
It was not long before a band of the raiders
came in. The ladies bade them take anything they could find, but
begged them to be as quiet as pOSSible, so as not to· disturb
'Poor Aunt Betsie.' They helped themselves to what they wanted,
looked suspiciously several times at the invalid chair, but
fi naIl y went away wi thout di sturbi ng the poor i nval i d. "
