BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH of JAMES LEI BEY
From Tracy Learnard Scrapbooks,
Courtesy Watkins Community Museum

~

AMES LEIBEY, M. D., deceased, was born
~
in Hamburg, Germany, and in boyhood ac.
companied his father, Frederick, to A~erica,
settling first in Philadelphia, but soon gOlOg to
:the Cumberland Valley, where he was reared and
leducated. He then went to New Orleans, where
;he studied medicine and began its practice. Re:turning north in 1848 he left New York for Cali;fornia via Cape Horn on the ship "Columbus,"
:and after a monotonous voyage landed in San
Francisco. Going inland, he engaged in miniug. In 1852 he returned east, bringing with
him a considerable amount of gold-dust. For a
time he made his home in Cincinnati, Ohio,
where he owned property, but later went back
to New Orleans and embarked in the sugar refining business, making shipments of sugar to the
north by boat.
In Logansport, Ind., in May, 1856, Dr. Leibey
married Miss Nancy A. Graham. Their wedding tour was - a trip to Leavenworth, Kans.,
where they arrived on the 30th of the same
month. On the 3d of October, 1856, they came
to Lawrence in a stage with nine passengers, guarded by. twenty-six dragoons, whose
presence the border warfare rendered necessary.
Crossing the Kaw by means of a rope ferry, they
entered the town that was to be their future
home. Both being ardent free-state advocates
and stanch Republicans, they incurred the hatred
of pro:slavery sympathizers, whose malice they
suffered more than once. They were living in
LaYKence at the time of the Quantrell raid and
lost their residence and business property by fire.
Dr. Leibey was taken a prisoner and locked in a
room above the hardware store, it being the intention to fire the building with him in it. A
guard was placed before the store to prevent his
es~pe. Mrs. Leibey was driven out of her house
by the gang. Learning her husband's where-

Sublitted by Judy". Sweets

abouts, she went to the guard' and appealed to
him for the doctor's release, but in vain. Afterward another ruffian was put ou guard and she
made her appeal to him, but of course without
avail. As she stood watching, she saw the
guard hurry across to a saloon. At once she ran
upstairs, took her husband down the rear stairs
and hastened witJt him to the river, where they
escaped in safety. ,..
After the raid, Dr. and Mrs. Leibey returned
to Leavenworth and remained there until a house
was built for them in Lawrence. From the
shock and danger of. the raid Mrs. Leibey suffered a long illness and it was some time before
she 'regained her former strength. In October
they returned to Lawrence and took up their residence in a frame house that had been built for
them. Soon afterward they erected the residence
in which Mrs. Leibey and her daughter ~ow
make their home. The latter, Lily Graham
Leibey, is an accomplished musician, highly educated, well iuformed in arts, music and science,
and is her mother's companion both in domestic
interests and the broader field of knowledge and
culture. Dr. Leibel' was a wan of more thanordinary ability. His education was broad and
he was familiar with several languages, besides
being a musician, a performer on various instruments and a vocalist .. From the age of seven~ .
teen he was a member of the Presbyterian
Church and his life was that of an earnest Christian. Fraternally he was identified with J:he
Masons. His death occurred in 1868, when he
was fifty-six years and ten months old.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF NANCY (GRAHAM) LEI BEY

--'
, ~ RS. NANCY A. (GRAHAM) LEIBEY is one
i
,of the pioneer women of Lawrence, to whose
patriotic devotion and sterling judgment
much of the early gro~th of this city was due.
Much has been written and much said concern, ; ing tbe men who came to Kansas 'in early days
,\ I, with the hope of making this a free state, and
: certainly too much cannot be said i~ their,praise;
but little has been written regarding the women
who came west in the' 50S, who endured all the
. horr,?,rs an!1J),uf(ered_thehardsl~ips of border war- 'I
I fare, and who, in spite of all perils, remained '
, true, faithful and steadfast to the end. Such, iii
brief, isthe story of Mrs. Leibey'slife. Shecame .•
west a bride, leaving a home where every comfort '
had been found and' a state where peace reigned;
from such a place she was brought to a state rent
with dissension and stained with the blood of
martyred citizens. ,Like her husband, she was a
radical Abolitionist and was determined to do all
within her power to advance the free-state cause.
In early days she became acquainted with all the
noted men of Kansas and was an ardent admirer
and personal friend of "Jim" Lane and other
I Abolitionists.
Prom the age of seven until fifteen our subject
lived in Springfield, Ohio, where 'she attended
the public schools and academy. When seventeen she began to teach in Logansport and continued until her marriage three years later. She
then came to Kansas with Dr. Leibey and has
since made this state her home and has maintained the deepest interest in its welfare. While
in Leavenworth a body of men came from Platte
, County, Mo., to terrify the free-state people.
, She was sitting on the porch at the Phillips house
as they passed by. The next morning another
company appeared and surrounding the house,
,sent some of their men into the house. Several
free-state men were shot in the ha11,~.. 'Nillinlll
,Phillips was killed and his brother wounded.
Fearing the seizure of their possessions, she had
the trunks taken into a building in the rear of a
neighboring house and there locked. All freestate' workers were ordered by the pro-slavery
invaders to leave, and many,' fearing for their
'., lives, hastened away, some going on the boat
"Emma." Dr. and Mrs. Leibey were boarding

During the passage they met the i
: "Old Emigrant," and boarded it, finding among:
jts passengers Mr. Geary, the new gov~rnor of:
Kansas, who had been a friend of the doctor in i
California. They returned with him to Forti
Leavenworth and remained in the colonel's home
for twenty-one days. Afterward they experi-!
enced all the perils of war times in Lawrence and j
more than once escaped as by miracle.
;
Since Dr. Leibey's death Mrs. Leibey ha~.i
. given her attention to the management of her!
property and moneyed interests, in which, being j
a thorough business woman, she has been quite ~
successful. She has never lost her love for Kansas and no one rejoices in its prosperity more'
I
than does she.

was born in a hunter's lodge near Uniontown,

CHARLOTTB V. CUTTBR's SBVBNTIETHBIRTHDAY CBLBBRATION

From:

Republican Journal, Lawrence, KS., October 10, 1873.

"Yesterday the seventieth
birthday of Mrs. Charlotte V.
Cutter was made the occasion by
her affectionate children ... It
took
place at
the
Cutter
homestead adjacent to Vinland.
" ... The lady in whose home the
noble company was gathered was
born in 1803 and long a widow,
came to Kansas with younger
members of the family fourteen
years prior to occupy the home
her
sons had prepared
for
her ... We found among the goodly
company the following:
John ROWE, who was born in Yorkshire, England in 1799 and
arrived in Kansas May 21st 1856; also his wife, Ellen ROE born
also in Yorkshire, England and having come to Kansas in 1857.
Zach~riah
WARREN, born in Virghinia in 1799, has lived here
thirteen years. His wife Elizabeth WARREN, also born in Virginia,
1797. These two venerable souls have lived together as man and
wife these fifty-one years.

Thomas PEARSON, born in Tennessee in 1806, has been in Kansas
fourteen years. His wife, Rhoda PEARSON, born in Ohio in 1820.
Rev. C.H. LOVEJOY, born in New Hampshire in 1811, and came
hither March, 1856. His wife, Julia L. Lovejoy, sixty-one years
of age, came to Kansas with her husband.
Daniel GOULD, born in Ohio in 1794. came to Kansas in 1855.
Lurany GOULD, his wife, born in Ohio in 1816, came hither with
her husband.
Z.D. WOOD, a New Yorker, aged fifty-six, and his wife, C.A.
WOOD, sixty years old, born in Vermont.
Mrs. Mary GILL, aged 70, born in Cornwall, England. Mrs. G.
and her husband have been partners in wedlock forty-nine years.
Lucy ESTABROOK, aged fifty-four,. came here in March,
from western Massachusetts.
Mrs. Irene DUNN, aged sixty-nine, born in Ohio.

D

1855,

65

Mrs. K. WALTON, born in Maryland.
Mrs. Sophia L. SOULE, born in Bath, Maine,
in 1807, came to
Kansas in the fall of 1855 to join her husband, Amasa SOULE, who
will be remembered by all the old settlers as the "venerable
cooper," the inveterate abolitionist who harbored runaways, the
non-resistant who moulded bullets and sharpened bayonets; a
member of the convention which framed our State constitution, and
member elect of the first State Legislature, but who died ~re the
fruition of his hopes in the admission of Kansas as a free state.
We complete our list of the more advanced of the party with
Adrian DAVIS, aged sixty-five,
from westport, Maine, on a visit
to Kansas. There were present also, T.C. Marsh of Chicago, Rev.
V.M. King and his amiable lady, now of Burlingame, in this state,
and the children and grandchildren of the family.
We found all these gray heads, then, grouped together for the
first time in their lives, enjoying this occasion immeasurably ..• "

DON JOHN RANKIN

ALICE ANNIE COLLIER
Was born June 21, 1860, in Pittsburgh, Pa. At the age of five
years she took a long journey, taken by many about that time, to
Kansas. Slle was domiciled for the next three years on a Kansas
farm just south of Lawrence. Tiring of country life and rural
school she took up her abode in town and entered Quincy school,
steadily pursuing her studies and graduating from Central high
school in 1876.
She early applled herself to the study of music and became very
proficient. In the fall of 1876, when she entered the University,
she became a member of the chapel choir and continued in that capacity for the five years succeeding, contributing very largely to the
enjoyment of nearly every student occasion and program by the
magical power of her melodious voice. She was the "Sweet Singer of '81." She was an honorary member of the Oroph1lian Society
and an I. C.
In October, 1884, Miss Collier merged her l1!e with that of her
classmate, Don J. Rankin. Her biography will be continued under
that name.

Excerpts of "The Class of 1881"
courtesy of Mrs. Joan H. Parker,
Glenview, Ill. and the "50th
Reunion of the 1881 Class of K.D."

A condensed bundle of perspicacity, was born in Black Jack,
Douglas county, Kansas, (probp.bly in the proverbial log house) on
Oct. 20, 1858, just seven years aiter the advent of the senior member of the class (Floden). At the age of three moved to Lawrence
in time to have been massacred and to have his house burned by
QuantreU. Afterwards lived in the suburbs of Lawrence. Attended
city schools and in 1873 entered junior preparatory class at K. U.
Took a scientific course and specialized in mathematics and natural history. Was an Orophilian.
Mr. Rankin was married in October, 18S4, to our own Alice Collier and together they have journeyed through the 47 years, happy,
buoyant and prosperous. After the marriage they went immediately to the New Orleans Exposition with the exhibit of the Reading Iron Works of Reading, Pa. They moved to Reading in 1885,
where Rankin was superintendent of ice machine construction for
the Reading Iron Works.
He went to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1886 to erect an ice
machine. In 1887 bought the Albuquerque ice plant and returned
there to operate the same, remaining in the business till 1901. Has
been in the real estate and insurance business since.
The children, all graduates of K. U., in order of their ages are:
Herbert W. Rankin, '08, is city manager of Radford, Va., Madonna
R., '08, resides in Kansas City, Mo. Her husband, Albert P. Learned E, '10, K. U., is with Black & Veatch, consulting engineers. Juanita R., '10, whose husband, Howard A. ,Parker, is city engineer of
Tulsa, Okla.; Zelia Rankin, '21, of Cambridge, Mass., whose husband, S. P. Learned, '22, G '25, K. U., is a professor in the Harvard
Buslhess School.
Don and Alice are very justly proud of the fact that all their
four children are graduates of K. U., all are married and have
families, and they boast of one great grandchild. This is surely a
record which will stand for a long time, eight K. U. graduates in
one family, and all back to help celebrate the Golden Anniversary
of the class of 1~81.

EXCERPTS TAKEN FROM THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF
ALBERT R. GREENE

,

~----

1842-1893

liOn the 26th of September 1860, I walked to Lawrence, a
distance of 20 miles, to hear William H. SEWARD. His speech
was the one common cry--"A long cherished desire of mine is
fulfilled".
He was a very distinguished looking man, but it
seemed to me he flourished his gold snuff-box too much for
goo d t as t e ........................ . i l
"I walked home that night, arriving before daylight, having
made 40 miles. The family kept me up an hour relating what I
had seen and heard. Later in the season, I walked to Clinton
to hear Jim LANE. He spoke at night in the unfinished Congregational Church and there being no lamps, he held a stub of a
lighted candle in his hand and spoke until it went out and
left the audie~ce in darkness. He gesticulated frantically
and screamed until I am sure he could have been heard half a
. mile. The wind blowing through the open windows flung his hair
wildly about and altogether the scene was a remarkable one ... "
Note:

Albert R. GREENE'S autobiography is not in printed book
form and can be found at Clinton Historical Museum.
The above mentioned Congregational Church was demolished
in the 1917 tornado.
The Congregational Church site is
now Clinton Presbyterian Church.
