BLUE MOUND DISTRICT NO. 29
High on a hillside directly south of Blue Mound from which it took its name, stands a
schoolhouse, one hundred ten years after its first building stone was laid. Though begun in 1862
it was not finished and ready for occupancy till 1865. It is the first and only schoolhouse this
.fistrict ever had, and is the one that remained in use the longest of any rural school in the county.

ELLA (REBER) GERSTENBERGER t'1a10RIEs
(As RELATED FOR EUDORA HERITAGE BOOK

1975)

My Grandfather, Joshua REBER, and Grandmother, Esther (HOlLENBECK)
REBER, were born in Hamburg, Pennsylvania. They had eight sons and three
daughters. They came to Kansas in 1878 with two sons, Oscar and my father,
Daniel and one daughter, Alice (Mrs. Andrew KOHLER).
Grandfather was a Civil War Veteran and I have some of the medals and
brass buttons he wore on his uniforms. I am still using his walking cane.
Grandfather REBER built the front part of the house I now live in; my
father added to the house in later years. (This was midway between 9th and
10th Street on Church Street, west side of street.) He had a blacksmith
shop where my garden is located. Occasionally we still find square nails
and bits of harness, etc. when the garden is plowed. He later moved his
shop to 10th and Church Street, where Mrs. Bill KELLY now lives. Grandfather sold the blacksmith shop to Ed. Mistele. The white lilac bush,
floweri..'1g almond and the Juneberry bush in my yard were planted by my Grandmother REBER.
During part of my early life when I was in school, I stayed with her
and helped her cook for boarders. She never cooked on Sunday; always fixed
the Sunday meals on Saturday and kept them warm in her oven. She would sit
by the front window in her rocking chair on Sundays and read her Bible.
My father was first attracted to my mother at the wedding of Minnie
STRbBEL, my mother's sister, and Peter NElS. Daddy saw mother standing with
the wedding party and remarked that Louisa STROBEL was going to be his girl.
My older sister, Emma, was born in a hand-hewn log cabin. Dad later bought
twelve acres, one fourth mile out of town (east) on the Cemetery road, where
Archie and Frances GOODGER now live. (Archie razed the old house and built
a new one.) Dad cut down walnut trees, built a home where I was born. It
had one large room downstairs and two rooms upstairs. In later years he
added to the north side of the house. The first well drilled was on the
west side of the house, three hundred and twenty feet deep, which turned
out to be salt water.
Daddy built a smokehouse and did custom smoking. Fred ARKLE, John
MIENEKE and John EVERLEY helped Dad butcher hogs in the lower yard. The
hogs would hang in the big walnut tree overnight. The next day we cut up
the meat and rendered lard in a big kettle outdoors. That night we stuffed
sausage in cleaned hog intestines. I would sit on one end of the board
that held the sausage machine and run the press.
Our fruits and vegetables were dried on the porch roofs, processed in
the oven to kill germs and placed in gallon jars. Green beans, cucumbers,
etc. were salted down for future use (oh, you salty stuff!!). Apple butter
was made in a big iron kettle over a yard fire; gallons were made. Poor
Mom would sell some and always her baking powder can over the cellar door
got the tenth money for her church. Butter was churned in a wooden tub.
It was sold for twenty cents a pound and delivered to customers. Lots of
d~cks, geese and chicken feathers went for the "rich" guy's pillows. Our
plllows had straw. Flour sacks were used for pillow slips and also underwear. Our home-knit black stockings were itchy.
My mother was custodian at the church (Salem Evangelical) for $15.00
per year and my sister and I would take care of the lamps. We used a little
hand pump to pump air in the gas lamps. We had a church orchestra, the REBER-

104

GOOD Orchestra. I played guitar, later played the old pump organ in church
and still later the piano. Now at age eighty seven I am still playing piano
in church.
Sometime around 1900 there was news of an oil boom in Oklahoma. A number of venturesome men from Eudora left to stake out land for homesteading.
My Dad covered a lumber wagon with canvas, put straw in the bottom of the
wagon, fastened two long boxes by the endgate to feed the horses. He tied
a sack of corn under the wagon to feed the horses along the way in case they
could not find corn along the way. They packed blankets, food, coffee pot
and tincups and cooked their meals along the way. I recall that Charles
GABRIEL, Ed DIEDRICH and Gus FIEHLER went with Dad. Dad found nothing satisfactory to homestead.
After graduating from Eudora High School, I worked in the dry goods
department of the PILLA Store for $3.00 per week for five years, ignoring
my desire to attend Emporia College to become a teacher. While working there
I recall the Kaw Valley Bank was robbed; the robber was captured and injured
and brought back to the City Hall Jail. '(This jail was in the basement of
the old City Hall and located at 7th and Main Street). After working hours,
some of us from the store viewed the yaung man through a window; he was a
handsome young man and I felt sorry for him and offered a prayer.
Motor cars came into existence during my lifetime. We used to run two
blocks south to see the "Devil \-lagons" go by at ten miles per hour .. We .
could hear them coming down the road from one mile east, at Uncle Fritz's
house. wtat an age! Every occupant was wrapped up so they would not get
too much fresh air.
I have seen church programs change. Prayer meetings used to be crowded
and God was present, now people are afraid of "prayer night". It is called
mid-week service, if there is one. God is the same, but people are not.
I married Charles GERSTENBERGER, one of my high school classmates and
we lived in Kansas City for about six years, then moved to Prairie Center
to manage the general store there for about a year for Fred LOTZ, then back
to Eudora, where we both were born. I have lived in my present home since
1919. We rented the present home from my father and later purchased it from
him.
My Dad worked for many years for Delbert ADAMS at the Eudora Mills and
was very fond' of Mr. ADAMS. When our oldest boy was born my Dad asked me
what we named the boy. I told him "Orville Charles". He said, "I can't
remember a name like that, why don't you name him Delbert Charles after
Delbert ADAMS?" So he was named after Delbert ADAMS and his father.

Note: Charles GERSTENBERGER was employed by the Charles PILLA Store until
1929 when it was sold and then he and his wife opened the GERSTENBERGER
Grocery in 1930 in Eudora, starting at the old ROBINSON building, 731 Main
Street .. A few years later they.bought the BARTUSCH building, 723 Main Street,
where the EISELE Tin Shop had been. They closed their grocery in 1950.
Both buildings have been razed. Their children were: Delbert C., Lauretta
and Arvon Gale GERSTENBERGER. They were musically talented.

ALARIC GANDY ALRICH
The following is taken from the book,
Genealogy," by Naera Smith ALRICH and
or correspond with the authors, write
Ave., Upper Darby, PA 19082. The book

"Uncle Levi and the A1rich (A1ricks) Family
William Henry ALRICH, III. To order a copy
to Mrs. William H. ALRICH, 29 South Kirk1yn
cost them about $25 each to print.

To correspond with or join the Pieter A1richs Foundation, write to Bill ALRICH,
248 Upper Gulph Road, Radnor, PA 19087.

Alaric Gandy ALRICH was born 24 September 1868 at 511 Cooper St., Camden, New
Jersey, the only son of Levi Lockard and Emma Buck (ELDRIDGE) ALRICH. His father
was employed as foreman of an umbrella factory, then became the proprietor of a
grocery and provision store for about four years. In July 1878, Levi took his wife
and two children to Cawker City, Kansas when Alaric was about 10 years of age.
They arrived in January 1879, and Levi took a job as a clerk and began to edit the
Soldier's paper, "Camp Fire." In April 1883, he bought the "Free Press" and
changed its name to "The Public Record." Over the next 34 years, he remained as
editor of "The Public Record" and bought out a number of his competitors. One of
his hobbies was genealogy, and it was from him that the authors obtained much of
their information.
Alaric attended public schools, helping his father in his newspaper office in his
spare time and learning the printing business. His father was intensely interested
in providing his chi1dreri with a good education~ Alaric and his sister Rachel
became accomplished musicians and were invited to perform at church and social
events.
By 1906 Alaric had established his own Commercial Printing Co. in Lawrence,
Kansas, dealing in letter heads, envelopes, rubber stamps, business forms and
cards, invitations and book-binding. He became active in community affairs,
serving as Division Commander of the Sons of the Veterans in Kansas in 1913 and
1914. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and for 30 years was a clarinetist in
the Baptist Church.
On 30 June 1897, Alaric married Helen Marion "Nellie" OATMAN, daughter of Ade1fus
and Mary (RANSON) OATMAN. Nellie had been born in Leavenworth, Kansas on 23
October 1876. They had one child, Eleanor Evelyn ALRICH, born about 1905 at 347
Indiana Street in Lawrence. She married first a Naval officer attached to the
Brooklyn Navy Yard whose name is unknown to the authors. Shortly afterward the
marriage ended in divorce. About 1930 she married the son of Dr. James NAISMITH
(the physician, teacher, and minister who invented basketball as a gym sport and
was Kansas University's Director of Physical Education for 39 years.)
Alaric died 19 October 1939 in Kansas City, Kansas. Nellie died 13 January 1960.
They are both buried in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence, Kansas •

HISTORY NOTES
January 1881: On the 19th, Kansas became the first state to prohibit all
alcoholic beverages.
January 1889: Mrs. J.E. COVELL held a gymnastics class at the Rink, 807
Kentucky. She charged 25 cents admission to see exercises with wands,
dumbells, and clubs. An advertisement in the Lawrence Journal on January 13
said that lithe chief aim of the whole work is physical culture. 1I •.. A fire
at E.B. GOOD's grocery, 937 Massachusetts, Lawrence, did several hundred
dollars worth of damage.
