A BRIEF AND INCOMPLETE ACCOUNT OF THE HARTS IN DOUGLAS
Written and submitted by David L.

Hart~

COUNTY~

KANSAS

4001 Jean Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714.

More than 103 years ago my grandfather, Halleck Floyd HART, was born in the
vicinity of Douglas County, Kansas. His exact date of birth is February 20, 1886.
He was born at Lecompton, and he was the eleventh of thirteen children (4 boys and
9 girls) born to Samuel Calvin and Lucy Emma HART, who resided in that city (it is
believed) from at least 1883-84 to around 1907-08. There they bore three other
children: Geneva Beatrice~ born December 1, 1884; Alice Waif, born November 8,
1887; and Helen Frances, born May 2, 1891. The other nine children were all born
in Washington County, Kansas between October 1869 to January 1883. Three of those
children died within the first two years of their innocent lives. One male child
died at birth.
One of the surviving children was my great uncle~ Calvin Wild HART, who was
born January 22, 1883 and who died at the tender age of 22 1/2 years on July 15,
1905 at Lecompton from "appendicitis" (then undiagnosed) according to an 84 year
old niece of his currently living in California. Calvin, a sister Estella Eugenia
(HART) WILSON (1877-1964), and another niece, Lenore W. CARLYLE (1905-1984) are
all buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Lecompton. All three graves are
together.
On October 2, 1895. Viola Willit HART, Samuel's and Lucy's second child, was
married to a man named Charles E. DUMMER at Lecompton. They had a farm, according
to information I've gathered. which is now the site of a Dupont plant.
Sometime around 1905, "Floyd," as my grandfather was called. moved to
Colorado Springs, Colorado. where he is known to have shared a room with older
brother Carlos Maedon HART (1879-1847) for a while. A letter dated September 21,
1905 was written by Floyd HART to his mother~ Mrs. Lucy E. HART, from that city.
This letter mentions "Carl," as he was known, and his success at his bookkeeping
studies. In any case. no envelope accompanies the letter and there is no
indication whatsoever as to where it was sent. However. it is presumed that the
remnants of the HARTs (the remaining members) still resided in Lecompton at this
time.
.
On November 14. 1907. Geneva Beatrice HART married a man named Arthur Henry
PLATT at Lecompton. KS. He was the manager of the J. THOMAS Lumber Yard there. The
PLATTS lived in Kansas a while and later removed to California. "Neva." as my
great aunt was called, and Arthur PLATT had two daughters, Wanda and Beatrice, who
presently reside in Manhattan, Kansas.
Sometime around 1907-08 it is believed that Sam and Lucy HART and at least
two daughters also relocated to Colorado Springs due, it is said, to a bad case of
asthma he suffered from. For reasons of Samuel's health the HART family was
compelled to find a cooler climate in which to live.
As for my grandfather, H.F. HART, he married Evelyn St. JOHN on May 4. 1912
at Colorado Springs. Together they had three boys. Harold (my father). Homer and
Roy (1913, 1915~ 1917 respectively). Floyd HART died on Decmeber 20~ 1953 (about a
year and a half after my birth)~ was cremated~ and laid to rest with his parents
and youngest sister~ Helen Frances ANDERSON~ in the family plot at Colorado
Springs~ Colorado. The other HART family members (Floyd's brothers and sisters)
are buried in California. Missouri and various parts of Kansas. Two. as I stated~
are known to be at rest in Lecompton. Douglas County, Kansas~ where the HART
family once called "home."

LAWRENCE HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1911

The following descriptions of the members of the
Lawrence High School class of 1911 were printed in
the "Commencement 111 Budget, II VoL XV II I, No.5,

THE THIRTY-SEVENTH

ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT

FRIDAY, JUNE SECOND

Mabel Wilma ARNETT, "Billie," came to this earth
Nov. 4. 1893 and ever since has continued to grow.
Really that is all that has been happening all
these years and now she is the tallest girl in
High School. Her one ambition is to get fat so if
that ambition is realized, weill probably hear of
her traveling with some show. She has been on
several high school programs and besides, has
remarkable talent as an artist. She will spend the
most of her time next year still higher - on the"·· . c:c:-=-'--_ _ _ _ _ __

John Lambert BAXTER was unfortunate to the extent of being born in Missouri, but
he says that he is going to try to live it down. The date of his arrival is June
10. 1894 and the place Kansas City. He came to Lawrence last year. Since he has
been among us he has exhibited a strong tendancy toward the gentle art of posey,
but he does not intend to become a poet for some time yet. His program for this
summer is printing in Topeka (why Topeka?) and for next winter college on the
hi 11 •
Frank G. BENEDICT, "Stub," was born Dec. 22, 1892. The most important event in his
life is yet to come - that is. getting out of high school. His motto is, "You
'rim' the high school or they'11 'rim' you." Stub has been accused of being lazy,
but that is an unjust accusation, for his rapid growth upward has used up the most
of his energy and there is no superfluous vitality left for his studies. Next year
he expects to take the engineering course.
Jessie Eleanor BORG lives in Lawrence, and in fact has lived here for years and
years. She is very quiet and has another accomplishment besides, that of playing
the piano. Not everyone knows of her talent as she does not believe in telling
what she can do. She expects to teach next year.
Hattie Beach BROWN was born in 1892 although she is very apt to tell you 1492. She
came from Missouri, but she doesn't have to be shown, much to her credit. She's
been here only a year, but we1ve found her greatest accomplishment is singing
tenor. She expects to go on the hill next year.

67

Homer Howden BROWN, "Jack," was born Nov. 25, 1893 at Skidmore, Missouri. He lived
in Baldwin a little while but when he heard of the class of 1911 at L.H.S. he made
a quick rush for Lawrence and got here just in time to spend a year with us. We
are glad he came, for he helped to win the championship for our basketball team,
but we can't help being a little afraid of his short, business-like manner and
that severe expression of his. He going with the rest of us to K.U. next year.
Olve Irene BROWN was born July 25, 1892 in Lawrence and has always lived here. The
boys all well remember the good banquets she helped prepare in the domestic
science department. She will attend the University next year and take the college
course.
Wallace BROWN doesn't know when he was born except that is was the same time as
his twin sister was. He lived in Meadville, Mo., but came here a year ago. He has
always been very fond to say the least of Athletics and is quite a football shark.
Next year he is going to enter the Engineering school at K.U.
Nellie BRYANT was born in Illinois but she wouldn't tell when for
Anyway she came to our fair city four years ago and graced L.H.S.
presence. She is always a joy to have around, fo whether the joke

Helen Elizabeth BUCK, "Buckie," was born in Nebraska, but she can't count back far
enough to tell when. She lived in Kingman, Kans., till she came here seven years
ago. She's the shorty of our class but she has energy enough to make up for her
deficiency in height. Next year she will either teach or get married. If she
teaches, won't the kids need our sympathy?
Dorothea Graham BUNN, August 5, 1892. Tho living in a suburb, so to speak, of
Lawrence, she has attended school in town. You all liked her in the Senior Play so
nothing needs to be said about that. If appearances count, Dorothea is "tagged"
already and it's a shame too that she should be so young. She intends to go on the
hill next year and take elocution, which will eventually land her on the stage.
Herbert Rockwood COLEMAN, "Bus Herbie," condescended to come to this earth in
1890. He landed in California, but three years ago he found Lawrence on the map
and that settled it for him. We have found out pretty nearly everything he ever
did or could do, but we aren't quite sure how long he has been in high school. He
is noted for his chapel speeches and so many other things that there is not room
to narrate them, but if you want to know, ask Herbie.
Clyde S. CONSTANT was born on Feb. 1, 1893 in Lawrence, Kansas, but it is said
that he was completely finished the last time a girl smiled at him. His dandy
little car has won his way into several girl's hearts. He says that he will go on
the hill next year.
Lyman Alvah CORNS was born in Bennington, Kansas on the fourth of March, 1893. He
came to Lawrence to go to L.H.S. in 1909. This spring he suddenly showed that he
was an actor by carrying one of the principal parts in the Senior Play. Lyman
sings, too. He has thought of teaching next year, but he will probably go on the

Corrine Ruth CROWLEY was born Oct. 17, 1893 at Council Grove. She came here five
years ago. Since then we have learned that that frown so often on her face does
not mean anything dangerous, for a smile comes out in the midst of it. The most
important event in her life was when she cut herself on a test-tube in Chemistry
and everybody thought she would faint. She expects to go on the hill next year.
Jonathan Mahaffie DOW was born in Olathe, Kansas June 6, 1893 but came to Lawrence
in time to see part of the big flood of 1903. Since he has been in high school he
has been on several chapel programs. He was a member of the debating club,
President of the Life Problem Club and Editor-in-chief of the Budget this year.
Ray DUNMIRE, Born sometime during the nineties somewhere in Western Kansas.
Greatest event in his life is getting through high school without studying. He may
take chapel and gym at K.U. next year. If he does, he probably will make things
lively in basketball for he took an active part this year in hauling down that
state championship.
Agnes Estelle ENGEL was born in 1893. She had always lived in Lawrence until this
year which she is spending in Germany at a boarding school. We are truly sorry (as
she also must be) that she cannot sit on the stage with the class of 1911 when we
receive those hard-earned diplomas. Agnes has always had a peculiar way of knowing
her lessons without studying. She expects to return this summer and attend K.U.
next year.
George H. FAIR was born in 1894. He is sweet sixteen and the baby (shall we say)
of our class. You wouldn't know it. though, for he has an amount of wordly wisdom
which exceeds that of most of us. He has lived in Abeline and Emporia and this
year joined our Senior class. He was on the Senior Play cast and was a shark
debater. Next year he is going to climb the hill.
Erna C.T. FISCHER was born. She thinks that's the only thing of importance that
ever happened during her life, but that's because she doesn't know about two
youths (very ardent admirers of hers) who had a duel about her not long ago. Erna
has made a public announcement that the man she marries must be a millionaire so
she can have an automobile and a butler. While she is waiting for this millionaire
she will attend the University.
Ray Jesse FOLKS. "Fokie," was born May 21. 1894 in Wellington, Kansas. The most
important event in his life was when he came to Lawrence in 1897. If you want to
know his highest ambition, ask Bess. She knows. Next year he is going to "bum."
Christine Beatrice FREARK was born July 6, 1890. She has had an exceedingly
eventful life. having had narrow escapes from drowning and in other ways of
killing herself, but the most important event of her life was when she went to the
Junior Prom with - a man. But what is she going to do next year? Ask her.
Frank Eugene GODDING was born in Lawrence on October 23, 1894. He has been on the
Budget staff two years. this year as Business Manager. He has had several bad
cases since his Freshman year, but has generally recovered. He will probably take
the college course on the hill next year.
Virgi~ia Fer~ GOFF is a new member of L.H.S., but after arriving here she became
acqualnted rlght away, and began to take part in things. We are glad to have her
with us. She is to go on the hill and take the college course.

Warren HANSEN arrived on July 12~ 1891 in Lawrence. His tastes are along the line
of drawing and painting and those who have seen his work agree that it is
splendid. He has planned to stay in Lawrence this summer.
Gladys Margaret HENRY was born in Lawrence on January 18~ 1893. She has always
taken an active part in class affairs and has often appeared on class programs.
School work is also one of her long suits. This is her fourth year as a special in
the music department of the University and she intends to continue her work in the
School of Fine Arts next year.
Helen M. HORNADAY was born April 28~ 1893 and is the "girl from Abilene." She
moved to Lawrence five years ago and immediately everyone was wild about her.
"Happy" is a true sport as far as having a good time goes. "The way to a man's
heart is thru his stomach." So says Bob~ for Helen certainly is a cook. She will
go to K.U. next year. We might call her the most popular girl in the class and it
would be the truth.
Edna Marie INGELS was born in Hiawatha. In 1908 she
get the advantage of the fine high school here. She
teach next year or not, but seems inclined to go on

Conrad Karl JESPERSEN was brought by the stork to Lawrence, Kansas, U.S.A. October
19, 1891, just a day late to be a birthday present to his mother. He has always
attended the schools of Lawrence. One year of his life (1904-1905) was spent in
Denmark, so if you run acros a Dane, just send him around to Con. and he will talk
to him in his native tongue. If you want to know his merits in cooking etc., ask
any member of the Life Problem Club. Providing he does not go to K.U. next year~
you will probably find him at L.B.C.
Margaret S. KANAGA was born in Hutchinson~ Kansas Sept. 3~ 1892 but moved to
Lawrence when she was seven years old in order to imbibe some of the soothing air.
She has had quite a political record~ making every class position except
President: Secretary of Freshman Class~ Treasurer of Sophomore class, and Senior
Class, Vice-President of Junior class. She was the Society Editor of the Budget
and was the star of the Junior farce. Of all her many cases the one with the man
who has the longest name in the Senior Class is the most serious. It is like a bad
penny; it always comes back. Ask Sam.
Adelaide Marie KAUZER~ (better known as "Della~") was born in Milwaukee~ Wis., on
the 25th of June 1893. She came to Lawrence in 1906. The quotation that hangs in
Pap's office will apply to her: "The reason why people who mind their own business
succeed is because they have so little competition." She intends to go on the hill
next year.
Marie KETELS was born in Lawrence August 24, 1893. Marie has always been at the
head of all class affairs and a strong standby in the chapel programs - you all
remember the pretty pieces. In the Class Day program she gave the Class History.
It was very original. She will take Fine Arts on the hill next year, but isn't
very enthusiastic about it; she wants to go to a girl's school.
Gertrude Agnes KIRCHOFF is a Senior who has already made extensive plans for the
future. What are they? Well, ask Gertrude.

70

Lucile Minerva KREIDER was born on a farm near Oregon) Missouri in 1891. Not many
years ago she came to Lawrence and has been attending high school for four years.
She has spoken on chapel programs many times and has made a decided hit. The most
important event in her life was when she ate ambrosia ice at "Wiedie's." Her
motto is always to look on the bright side of life. She will attend K.U. next
year.
Victor Robinson LARSEN was born August 25) 1891 at Stockville) Neb. He attended
Sherman County High School until he came here in 1908. Singing is Vic's great
occupation. Although he denies ever having done anything of consequence everybody
knows what a success he has been on the stage several times not only with amateurs
but also with professionals. Next year he will continue taking vocal lessions at
the Fine Arts School.
Georgia Bessie LAWRENCE start in drawing and the arts connected with it. One of
the most remarkable things that has happened lately is the beginning of a case
that gives indications of being one of the most serious in school. She is planning
to take the college course next year.
Ruth Marie LILLIS was born in Great Bend on

Rebecca Enola LONG came to L.H.S. from Madison) Kansas not long ago) but had to
leave school in May on account of sickness in her family. She has planned to take
the college course on the hill.
Louise Anna LUCKAN was born August 3) 1892 in Lawrence. Like her sister she is
awfully bright. She has been a staunch supporter of the Bible Class and an all
round fine girl. She will attend K.U. next year.
LaDora Grace LUPHER was born in DeWitt) Nebraska August 2) 1893. Isn't it funny
how they all come to Lawrence? Her call was in 1900. She is a gun in German and is
scheduled to win the Carruth scholarship. Besides that she is a fine cook; just
ask the Normal girls if she isn't.
Holly Avery MAN ROSE was born Somewhere in Nebraska on Oct. 30) 1893. He came to
Lawrence four years ago and since then has been going to high school. Holly made
his mark this year on the debating team. He is booked for K.U. college.
John Ruthven MARCH was born on July 5) 1892 in Jefferson City) Missouri. John has
had a good many things on hand for a long time. He has been prominent in class
affairs - part of the time as an official. This is his second year as Athletic
Editor of the Budget. ~e taught some classes in drawing for a while this year) and
was one of the actors 1n the Senior Play. Next year he intends to take law.
Maribelle McGILL has a reputation for her age) but whether its on account of her
youth or otherwise we d~n't know. This is her first year with us) but we have
already found that she 1S free from worry) free from care and has fun almost
anywhere. Like many other Seniors her program for next year includes the college
course at K.U.

Charles Lewis Callaway MILTON was born on the 24th day of November in the year
1891 in McPherson~ Kansas~ but came to Lawrence not long ago. Like all of the
Mi1tons~ he has been a fine football player. Was captain of the team this year.
The only class office he remembers of having was that of "Seargeant-at-Arms" of
the Freshman class. You would hardly recognize IChar1ie" by this long name at the
top~ but it is the same man nevertheless. Charlie has a faculty for intermittent
cases.
Alexander Baldwin MITCHELL was born in this city on October 21~ 1893. He has
played football considerab1y~ and played well too. He can also play the piano and
sing when he wants to. He was president of the class of 1911 during its Junior
year and has held the position of one of the parties in a most serious case for
years. Next year he expects to go on the hill. His ambition to be of course a
great lawyer.
William Randall MYERS was born on December 14 in the year 1892 or 1893. He came to
Lawrence when he was seven years old. Here he has been known as "Ching~" although
this name sounds Chinese. Next year he will probably be seen on the hill.
Avery Fincher OLNEY~ "Litt1e Pap~" was born August 19~ 1893 in Lawrence and has
lived here ever since. Thinking to start the class of 1911 in the right way~ he
secured the presidency of the Freshman Class and thinking to close it in the right
way~ he was President this year.
He was on the track team t\'/O years~ on the
B~dget staff~ on the last chapel program~ and has been a star debater. K.U. will
have his political and athletic services next year.
Frances PENCHARD was born on July 17~ 1892 in Lawrence and has remained true to
her town. One remarkable thing about her is the number of years she has attended
Sunday school without missing. Everyone expected her to teach as she was in the
Normal C1ass~ but she informs us that she intends to rest next year. She is a gun
in German and a "Gute~ Frau1ein~" always follows her recitations.
Nettie May PHILLIPS has fallen into the habit of studying. This year she has been
applying herself to the Normal Course and to the Budget 'in the local department.
She is on the Commencement program. She has already secured a school for next
year.
Frank Arthur PREYER is a jumper. The fact is that he is some jumper. On two
different occassions this year he has cleared the bar at five feet six inches the L.H.S. record. Pole vaulting is another of his specialties. K.U. will have him
next year.
Lila REECE was born February 25~ 1892 on a ranch. Ranch life has not made her
brawny and big as it does some people. Her highest ambition is to teach but if she
ever does there is danger that the "youngins" will run over her unless she has a
protector.
Mabel Jennie RICHARDSON is another of the promising teachers L.H.S. is sending
forth this year. It is not hard to imagine that under her school work would be a
genuine pleasure. Anyway let us hope so for the sake of the little kids who will
go to her school.

72

Albert Clayton ROSS was born in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma in 1893 - he has forgotten
the date. Soon after this he moved to Lawrence and for the past two years has been
a star on the track team. L.H.S. certainly owes him a lot. Many people were very
much surprised at some things that took place at the Senior picnic but perhaps
this first case will not be serious.
Kathryn Marie SAlLE was born November 5. 1893 in the good old town of St. Joe. She
moved to Lawrence sixteen years ago. When she graduated from the grade schools she
won the scholarship and now on leaving L.H.S. her record is still excellent. She
has been taking the Normal Course this year and will teach next: otherwise she
would have taken the Carruth Scholarship prize. we know.
Eva Lena SCHRADER was born in 1893 in Missouri. She came to Kansas nine years ago.
She has been taking the Normal course. If she passes in that terrible examination.
she will consider that as the most important event in her life. Next year she will
impart some of her great store of knowledge to ornery kids in some school.
Karl B. SPANGLER. known as "Sprecken." has been one of the Business Managers of
the Budget this year and has occupied himself with "chasing ads." Karl is noted
for his walk. for when he starts to go somewhere he gets there at a 2.40 gait. He
will be seen next year going up Mount Oread.
Ralph D; SPROULL was born on Teddy's birthday in 1892 in Pittsburg. Kansas. He
came to Lawrence in 1909 and jumped into athletics at L.H.S •• principally
basketball and baseball. He was something of a shark in chemistry this year.
getting his lab work done in a hurry. He intends to take college on the hill next
year.
Allan STERLING. lithe jumping kid." was born in Lawrence. August 27. 1892. He has
been on the track team for three years and has annexed many points for L.H.S. We
saw the beginning of a case in his Sophomore year. but guess that he put it aside
in order to shine all the more brightly in athletics and he certainly has made
good.
Myra STEVENS is a story writer. She took one of the prizes for a Christmas story
in 1909 and has been on the Budget staff for two years. this year as Literary
Editor. Next year she can be found at K.U. in the college.
Florence Mabel STRAHAN was born August 27. 1893 in Mindenmines. Missouri. For
those who don't know where it is. I will say that it lies a few miles north-west
of Kansas City. After moving around the country many times she at last settled in
lawrence three years ago and graduates on the honor roll. She is on the
Commencement program. The college course at K.U. is her destination for next year.
Gladys Allene STRAHAN was born August 20 in the town of Mindenmines in the year
1892. She accompanied her sister on her many travels and like her stopped in
lawrence three years ago in order to assimilate some of the knowledge of L.H.S. As
a result of this assimilation. she graduates an honor student.
Ashby Adelbert STREETER was born July 23. 1894 at Hesston. Kansas. By his size one
would never suspect that he had seen only sixteen short years. - and that wise
look on his face - that would mislead anyone.

73

Stella STUBBS was born in Mulvane, Kansas July 10, 1894. When you consider that
she is some relation to our governor it is no wonder that she is all right. She
was Vice-President of the Class of 1911 and had one of the main parts in the
Senior Play. She is an honor student and on the Commencement Program. She will
attend K.U. next year.
Olga Margaret THUDIUM was born in Lawrence November 20, 1892. She wouldn't tell us
anything interesting about her, but we do know one thing without being told - that
terrible enduring case. Olga has been a fine student and intends to go on the
hi 11.
Ethel Lenore ULRICH was born June 12, 1893 in Lawrence. It isn't any wonder that
she has so many friends with those grand brown eyes. She was Class President in
her Sophomore _ _ _ _ _ in 1911, and on the Junior Prom committee. She intends
to take the college course on the hill next year.
Charles Frederick WALKER was born on January 15, 1893 in Frankfort, Kansas. In
1910 he came to Lawrence and has been attending this high school and getting his
lessons very successfully. He intends to join the ranks of the engineers on the
hill next year.
Charles Emerson WARD was born in Lawrence on November 11, 1891. He has been a
member of the 1910 track team, a member of the High School Orchestra of 1910-11, a
member of the High School Glee Club of 1908-9, a member of the debating Club in
its infancy before any great debates were pulled off, Vice-President of the Life
Problem Club that met at the Y.M.C.A. K.U. College next year.
Arthur Bu11ene WEAVER came to earth Feb. 2, 1894 but he didn't stay there long at
least his head didn't. Just look at his height and see if it isn't true that "Art
is long." But of all the handsome men in the class of 1911, we'll gladly give Art
the blue ribbon. He has had many little love affairs but has disentangled himself
from them all, so that now he can go on the hill next year a free man and open to
the highest bidder.
Leo N. WEIBEL arrived in Colony, Kansas on December 1, 1891. In 1906 he came to
Lawrence. He has been a faithful member of the class of 1911, especially in
chemistry. He expects to attend the School of Engineering on the hill next year.
Justina A. WEST was born February 4, 1893 on a ranch. All her life she has been
used to doing nearly as she pleases so when it comes to studying there isn't much
doing since that occupation isn't the most pleasing to "Tiny." Nevertheless she
expects to go on the Hill next year.
Hazel Eme1yn WILSON and Helen Agnes WILSON. "The Class Twins," were born June 19,
1892 on a farm a few miles from Lawrence, but moved here as soon as they were old
enough to go to school. You can tell them apart, which is unusual. The cases that
these two have had between them are appalling. However, none have been serious.
They will puzzle their instructors on the hill next year.
Ida Newell WOOLSEY was born in Cambridge twenty years ago, but on account of the
migratory nature of her family was forced to lose out on three years of school of
which we are very glad as it makes it possible for her to graduate with the cl~ss
of 1911. She has been taking the Normal Course this year and has already secured
her school for next year.

Mrs. George D. DOREMUS~ RR #2~ Washington~ IL 61571
Seeking information concerning Thadius WHEDON and wife Hanna
HAMMOND~ who homesteaded on Wakarusa Creek where the Santa Fe

where from and when they came to that area~ brothers and sisters
if they had any. I often heard my grandmother say that Ruby

The family of Henry NEMEYER is looking for his children and a

McMARMICK~ married 1st Adam EVANS of Randolph Co.~ IL~ by whom

SOME TIPS FOR WRITING QUERIES
I put together these tips by looking at the policies of a variety of publications.
- the editor.
1. Feature the surnames PROMINENTLY~ but don~t just submit a list of surnames.
2. Focus your inquiry on one family at a time~ but if that family can be linked to
other surnames~ include those links.
3. Include as many birth~ marriage~ residence and death dates and places as you
can for the persons you are inquiring about. A suggested format is: first name~
last name~ birthplace~ birthdate; place of death~ date of death; place of
marriage~ date~ spouse's name.
4. Note references already consulted if space permits.
5. Use only standard abbreviations. The New England Historic Genealogical Society
requires these listed below~ and they have become somewhat the standard:
anc. = ancestors~ ancestry
b. = birth~ born
bp. = baptized
bro. "" brother
bur. "" buried
c. or ca. "" circa (about)
ch. "" child~ children
c.r. "" church record
co. "" county
d. "" death~ died
dau. "" daughter
desc. "" descend~ decendants~ descended~ descends
d.s.p. "" decessit sine prole (died without issue)
d.y. "" died young
fame "" family.
fl. "" flourished~ lived
g.s. "" gravestone
info"" information
m. "" married. marriage
p. "" parents~ parentage
pOSSe "" possibly
probe "" probable~ probably
ref. "" reference
rel. "" related~ relative(s)~ relationship
rem. = removed
res. "" resided
sis. "" sister
twp. = township
w. "" wife
wid. "" widow~ widowed
