HISTORY OF THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF LAWRENCE
society member Zona Smith recently compiled this history and membership
list of the First Christian Church located at 1000 Kentucky, Lawrence, KS. The
church is affiliated with the Disciples of Christ of the USA and Canada. The
church burned in 1947, but some records were salvaged. The chronological list
of members was obtained from those records remaining from the period before
1905.
Disciples of Christ church records are also housed at the Disciples of
Christ Historical Society, 1101 19th Ave. South, Nashville, TN 37212.

**
During the year 1883, a small group of people affiliated with the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) met from house to house on Sundays for
church services. As they grew in number they were able to obtain halls for
meeting places. On January 12, 1884, they formally orgainzed themselves as a
church with about twenty-five members. The first elders were Henry NEWBY, to
whom much of the credit has been given for the actual organization, William
BURTON, Addison HYDE, and D.P. DUTTON. The first Deacons were H.C. PATTERSON,
who has been termed "one of the mainstays of the work during the days of
struggle," J.H. BUCKLEY, A. BURTON, and R.A. KIER. J.M. GRAHAM was the first
clerk of the church.
A charter from the State of Kansas was applied for on June 13, 1884, and
was granted on June 19, 1884. The first board of trustees was composed of the
following: Henry NEWBY, William BURTON, Addis HYDE, H.C. PATTERSON, and J.H.
BUCKLEY.
The newly formed congregation purchased from the Universalist their
church building on the corner of 11th and Kentucky Streets. On September 15,
1887, J.T. WILLIAMS assumed the debt. on the old building as a memorial to his
daughter, Mrs. Lillian B. GRAHAM. With the burden of debt lifted for them, the
members of the congregation were encouraged and worked even harder than before
for the Kingdom of God.
In March 1907, H.C. WILHITE conducted a great revival meeting in South
Park, where a tabernacle seating 2,000 people had been built by the men of the
church. The tabernacle was erected in one week. This revival added 300 to the
church and made larger quarters imperative. The church trustees soon sold the
old building to the Friends and planned erection of a new building. During the
erection of the church the congregation met for a while in the old brick
church which stood where the Masonic Temple is now located. This was the
original Methodist Church. When the Masonic Order found it necessary to clear
the ground for" the Temple, services were held in the large hall which was in
the Fraternal Aid Building.
The new church was erected at 10th and Kentucky Streets and dedicated
December 13, 1908, during the ministry of C.L. MILTON.
Early in the year of 1947, in the interest of progress and to deepen the
spirit of worship, it was decided to remodel the sanctuary and change it from
the Akren type to chancel type with the Communion Table and baptistry being
the center of attention during services. Mr. A.F. WICKES, architect for the
Board of Church Extension, visited Lawrence and planned the changes.
On December 8, 1947, a fire broke out in the office of the church,
destroying all equipment and supplies. Most of the membership records were
saved and copied.

(28) Augustus WATTLES, son of Erastus and Sarah (THOMAS) WATTLES, born 25 Aug
1807, Lebanon, CT, died 19 Dec 1867, Mound City, KS. Entered Lane Theological
Seminary near Cincin~ati, OH, where he studied for the Presyterian ministry
and organized schools for black boys. Traveled throught Ohio and the country
establishing more schools and working for abolition of slavery. Bought land in
Mercer Co, OH, where he continued his ministry by giving freed slaves title to
portions of the land. He also helped school blacks to be self-supporting when
they attained freedom. In 1848 his health failed and he moved his family to a
farm on the Ohio River about 40 miles above Cincinnati. In the spring of 1855
moved his wife and four children in three covered wagons to Kansas to prevent
it becoming a slave state, reaching Lawrence 7 May 1855. He took up farming
near Bloomington in Clinton Twp.,Douglas Co., KS. On May 22 he was elected to
the Kansas legislature, which met at Ft. Riley on July 1st, only to have his
seat taken from him by Missourians. During that summer he commuted to Ft.
Riley to work for the fort commander and to care for those struck by a cholera
epidemic. In November of that year, while he was engaged in work for the
government at Ft. Riley, he lost two horses he had brought from IN when they
were used to spread the alarm that the Missouri raiders were coming. During
that winter, one of the coldest on record, he assisted in distribution of
clothing and provisions to isolated farms and communities where residents had
been robbed or had their homes burned. In August 1856 the free-state army
camped near his home at his invit~tion, during which time he fed. them and
cared for their sick. After Quantrill's raid destroyed the Herald of Freedom
office in Lawrence, he brought from Pawnee a printing press and assisted in
installing it. At about the time the first issue came out, 2 Nov 1856, he
became the paper's assistant editor. His resources were so depleted that he
was forced to sell his land. In 1857 he led settlers to Linn Co., KS, where
earlier free-state settlers had been driven out. He established a claim
adjoining his brother John, and they were both among the six incorporators of
the town of Moneka, Feb 1857. Here he operated a station on the Kansas
Underground Railroad in his home. In May of 1858 he was in Leavenworth on
business where he met John Brown just returning to Kansas from the East and
convinced Brown to come back to Linn Co. with him, where Brown made his
headquarters for a time at Augustus' home. By 1859 the pro-slavery
sympathizers had driven away the residents of Moneka and put a price of $1,000
on Augustus' head. After John Brown's disastrous attack on Harper's Ferry, VA,
Augustus joined a party attempting Brown's rescue from jail, but the rescue
was never sanctioned by Brown himself and so did not take place. Augustus was
summoned before a senate committee investigating those who may have financed
or known about Brown's plans. He was detained in Washington during the
hearings, during which time he appeared for various matters concerning KS.
Sent by the Indian Dept. to inspect the condition and activities of Indians in
KS when the Civil War began. After the emancipation proclamation, he assisted
those newly freed to become self-sufficient. His health began failing,
however, and he was forced to return home, where he died at age 69. Married
Susan E. LOWE, a teacher who volunteered to teach one of his schools in
Whitesborough, NY. May have married 2nd Mary __ • Children:
(30) Theodore W. WATTLES, born about 1840
(31) female WATTLES, m. Hon. O.E. ·MORSE of Mound City, KS
(32) Stephen O. WATTLES. Held rank of Lt. Col. when he took command of the First Indian home
guard, Carthage, MO, 11 Jul 1862.
(33) At least one other child. No further information given to the editor.

CLAIX OF WILLIAK J. CARD

This claim can be found in "Kansas Claims," House Reports, 36th Congress, 2nd
Session , Vol. 2 at the Spencer Research Library, Governments Document
section, University of Kansas (call number 1107). Researched by the editor.

No. 427
In the matter of the petition of William J. CARD.
Dwight W. SCOUTEN, of lawful age, being duly sworn, deposes and says:
That he is acquainted with William J. CARD; that he is a citizen of Kansas,
and resides near Bloomington, in Douglas County; know of his having incurred
losses during the difficulties of 1856, by way of loss of property, to wit:
One cornfield of seven or eight acres, the property of Mr. CARD, was entirely
destroyed by (in the main) irresponsible persons engaged in the difficulties;
deponent saw persons with teams in the field gathering corn, this was in the
fall of 1856; the corn was worth about sixty to seventy-five cents per bushel;
it grew upon bottom land - "old ground" - and would have yielded between sixty
and seventy-five bushels to the acre; the field would have yielded about (450)
four hundred and fifty bushels.
DWIGHT W. SCOUTEN
Subscribed and sworn to before me this 20th day of June, A.D. 1859.
(L.S.) H.J. STRICKLER, Notary Public
William J. CARD, being duly sworn, deposes and says: That he made a
statement of his actual losses incurred during the difficulties of 1856,
before H.J. STRICKLER, late commissioner for auditing claims; which statement
was true and correct to the best of the knowledge and belief of this deponent;
this deponent therefore respectfully asks that the proofs, papers, and
testimony taken before said commissioner, upon which he made his award in my
favor, may be received by the board of commissioners appointed in accordance
with the provisions of an act entitled "An act to provide for the adjustment
and payment of claims," as his petition and testimony under the present law;
your petitioner would further represent that he settled in Kansas Territory in
the year 1855, and has resided_near Bloomington, Douglas county, ever since;
this deponent would further represent that he has never received compensation
or indemnity for said loss in any way whatever.
WILLIAM J. CARD
Subscribed and sworn to before me this 20th day of June, A.D. 1859.
(L.S.) HIRAM J. STRICKLER, Notary Public
D.W. SCOUTEN, being duly sworn, deposes and says: That on or about the 15th of
October, A.D. 1856, he passed the field of W.J. CARD, in which field he saw
some persons who were engaged in loading corn from said field upon a wagon
that they had with them; that these men, to his knowledge, were not employed
by the said W.J. CARD to load said wagon; and that he, this affiant, verily
believes that the said men intended to carry away and appropriate to their own
use without the knowledge or consent of said W.J. CARD, the said corn; that
the said field cons~.sted of about seven acres, all of which was under
cultivation.
DWIGHT W. SCOUTEN
Sworn to before me and subscribed in my presence this 14th day of June, A.D.
1859. Witness my hand and the seal of the second district court of Kansas
Territory.
(L.S.) L.W. ARTHUR, Clerk,

who has donated her letter to the Watkins Museum. Mrs. Matney does not say
where she got her information.
Irvin H. SMITH, 1830-1874.
Line HECOX and Irv SMITH were friends of Captain JACOBS before the Civil
War started. Line and Irv took wagon trains of merchandise over the
Santa Fe Trail, so Captain JACOBS was apparently looking forward to a
good visit with them at some fort along the trail. (In reference to
Captain Jacobs' letter of 13 November 1864.)
Just before he died, Irvin SMITH sent for Henry HIATT to have him make
out a will. He left everything to the school teacher, Mary C. "Mother"
JOHNSON. Her first task was to put markers on the graves. These were
replaced by Nela about 1963/4.
Celinda B. SMITH, 1840-1874.

EXCERPTS FROM THE LAWRENCE DAILY JOURNAL, FEBRUARY 24, 1892
In CHARLTON's Court: This morning Chas. SMITH was brought before Justice CHARLTON on charge of stealing coal from
Union Pacific trains. His prelimiary trial was set for next Monday. The warrant has been out for SMITH for some
time, but it was only last night that he was found.
Wm. WHITE was also taken into CHARLTON's court this morning for trial on charge of drunkeness and disorderly
conduct. He was an old offender and was fined $10 and costs. He could not raise the money and is now in jail.
COUNTRY NEWS: LAKEVIEW. Mr. CROWDER has rented a farm on Deer creek and will move next week.
BALDWIN: W.H. HOUTT, a teacher of German, is endeavoring to organize a class here in town to take a six weeks'
course in conversational German.
Miss Nellie HOWLEY died at her home Monday noon after a long and severe sickness.
The store of Steve STURDEVANT's at Baldwin was broken into and about $100 of goods taken on Monday night. The
robbers were tracked as far north as the bridge across the Wakarusa but there all traces were lost.
CITY ITEMS: The CARRUTHERS cases regarding the title to certain tracts of land in the city were given a final
decision in district court today. In several of the cases motions for a new trial were filed.
E.M. DEDRICK has purchased a half interest with S.R. RILEY, and the new firm have opened a barber shop in the room
formerly occupied by Sutorius' Jewelry Shop.
NOTICE: I have bought all negatives made by Mr. A.C. HAMILTON also Mr. E.W. HAMILTON. There are many thousands of
these negatives dating back to October 1882. Parties wishing photographs from any of the above negatives can get
them by leaving order at my studio, at an early date, as they will positively be kept only a short time, 829
Massachusetts Street. J.L. MORRIS, Photo Artist.

DOUGLAS COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY GENEALOGIST AVAILABLE
The Society's Board recently voted to raise the rates charged by its
genealogist for research, yet we think they still remain reasonable. The new
rates are $10.00 per hour of research, plus our costs for copying and postage.
The new rates go into effect 1 April 1990. To retain the genealogist's
services, send a letter outlining the information you need to the Society to
the genealogist's attention. Please indicate if you have a budget which you do
not wish her to exceed. It is also a good idea to tell her all you know about
the person you seek and where you got the information so that she will not
duplicate your efforts.

DOUGLAS COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY MEMBERS' FIVE-GENERATION
CHARTS ARE DUE JULY 1, 1990 if you want them in the upcoming
publication. Members are limited to three charts per member. You may update
previously submitted charts (please indicate they are updates in an attached
note). If at all possible, please submit typed charts.
