BANNING MEMORIAL
The following articles were titled In Memoriam and submitted by Iona Spencer,
who received them from Dorothy Sage. Mrs. Sage did not indicate the source. It
seems to have been published about April, 1928, at the time of Mrs. Banning's
and Mr. Sherry's deaths.

JOHN BANNING
John BANNING was born near Macomb, Ill., Feb. 15, 1835 (the 5 is crossed
out and an 8 is handwritten over it) and passed from this life Oct. 31, 1923,
aged 85 years, 8 months and 16 days. His mother died in his early childhood,
leaving him and an older brother to the care of their father who remarried in
1842.
In 1855 the family moved to Kansas, settling near Big Springs in Douglas
Co., and John started out to make his own way in the world. He was among the
militiamen called to Lawrence after Quantrell's raid to care for the dead and
wounded and help repair the half destroyed homes. In 1864 he was a lieutenant
in the Shawnee militia regiment under Colonel VEALE, which took part in
fighting back Price's raid at the Missouri border.
At one time he engaged in ox train freighting with a partner named
Thomas CLARK, carrying supplies from Westport to Ft. Larned. In the early 60's
he was postmaster and storekeeper at Big Springs. While there, he married to
Hettie Jane ROBERTS, an Ohio girl, on Sept. 7, 1862. To this union were born
eight children, of whom two, Ella Bell and William B., with their aged mother,
survive him. He leaves also six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
In 1868 he located the homestead in Osage county, on Dragoon Creek, then
a part of the Sac and Fox reservation, and moved his family there the
following year. During the 70's he served the county as commissioner from his
district and later, one term as probate judge.
In the late 80's he became interested in mining and prospecting for gold
in Arizona and later in Colorado, spending several winters and summer
vacations in pursuit of the yellow metal.
His later years were spent too closely on the farm, the quiet life of
which was irksome to him. Having very little schooling, he had read law and
educated himself, and was naturally inclined to public service and a
professional life.
Having some faults, as we all have, he was yet one of the sturdy
pioneers of Kansas, marching in the vanguard of settlement and civilization,
leaving a long life-record that we may well honor.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. McFARLAND of Lawrence. Burial
was made in the Lyndon cemetery.

MRS. JOHN BANNING
Hettie Jane ROBERTS was born in Tuscarawis Co., Ohio, November 18, 1839
and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Belle BRYSON, April 17, 1928, aged
88 years and 5 months.
The funeral services will be conducted at the old Banning homestead, on
Dragoon creek, 4 1/2 miles north of Lyndon, the present William BANNING home,
this afternoon, April 19, and the burial will be in the Lyndon Cemetery.
When about 14 years of age she came with her parents to Big Springs,
Douglas Co., Kansas. In those days banks as we know them did not exist, but

5

the border bandits did, and the demure Hettie carried most of her father's
supply of cash, about $500 in gold, in a belt about her waist. Her father
finally succeeded in establishing a home known far and wide for it's
hospitality and good cooking.
On September 7, 1862, she was married to John BANNING, who was then
postmaster and storekeeper of the little village of Big Springs. Leaving the
store within a year, they farmed near Big Springs, then in 1869, they came to
Osage county, preempting the present homestead on Dragoon, where their active
years were spent in rearing their family and making a home in a new country.
From their early wedded life, both were members of the Christian church,
having been baptized in the Kaw River, near Tecumseh, and maintained the
connection in their new home.
Mrs. BANNING was the mother of eight children, two of whom survive her.
The living children are William BANNING, and Mrs. Belle BRYSON, both of
Lyndon. The children who have preceded her to the Better Land are Josephine
T.; Ephraim N.; Mary M.; John W.; Hettie M.; and Hubert.
Thus passes another of those brave pioneers who battled with the
boundless prairies, Indians, bandits, droughts, ague, poor transportation
facilities, grasshoppers, and the many other things which made pioneer life
strenuous but interesting, and who in the face of great difficulties founded
one of the greatest states of the Union and left their impress upon that state
which will rebound to its welfare for many generations. The ranks of these
pre-war pioneers is thinning very rapidly - even the boy or girl who was then
but ten years of age has now reached the age of 77 years.

DANIEL B. SHERRY
Daniel Boone SHERRY was born October 16, 1853, near Muncie, Indiana, ~nd
passed from this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur KITCHEN, near
Lyndon, April 13, 1928, aged 74 years and 6 months.
Making his own way in life from the age of 12 years, he educated
himself, attending Valparaiso University and Danville College, graduating fr9m
the latter institution in the early eighties, and entered the teaching
profession, which he followed in different sections of the country,
principally in Indiana. He was active in this work until 1916. During his
educational career, he was principal of several schools and was for a time,
employed in the Government Indian schools.
In 1886, he came to Kansas, teaching at Valley Falls, and then in Osage
county. He was married to Josephine T. BANNING June 29, 1887, and took up
farming on a homestead in Ness county, Kansas, near Utica. Driven out of this
work by crop failures, he re-entered the work of teaching, until he acquired
government land in the Little Bitter Root Valley of Montana, where he again
pioneered at farming until 1922.
He was united with the Methodist church while a young man, and took an
active part in church work until recent years.
His wife passed away October 22, 1894, leaving to his care four
children, all yet living, whose addresses are: Homer Kent SHERRY, Asbestos,
Quebec, Canada; Cameron B. SHERRY, San Antonio, Texas; Mrs. Edith ARCHER,
Larned, Kansas; and Mrs. Arthur KITCHEN, Lyndon, Kansas.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Lyndon, April 17.
Interment made in the Lyndon cemetery.

"When they decided to come to Kansas, Aunt Martha's mother the year
before 1858 spun two meal sacks each of flax, wool and hemp to bring to Kansas
in 59. They raised the flax and hemp the summer of 58. When the wagon was
loaded they had two meal sacks of each.
When the weather was bad and everything damp, they used the flax to
start their fires."
"I have so much to do and see to that I don't see how I can visit you
now. Besides all this Sam and Martha are to be married on Sunday next, the
23rd. I am much pleased with Sam's choice. There is no girl in the country
that I respect and admire so much as I do Martha. Well, since writing the
foregoing, I went up to Mr. HOPKINS yesterday morning, got there for dinner
and stayed all night, got home today at noon. Mr. HOPKINS is to come down next
Sunday to do up that little matter between Sam & Martha, and then we will have
a new housekeeper, and a good one too."

EARLY SCHOOL WRITINGS OF THE HART FAMILY
David Hart sends us these childhood compositions of his grandfather, Floyd
HART, and several of Floyd's siblings, which were transcribed from copies of
School News, originally published at Lecompton, KS. Two editions of Vol. 1,
namely, No.1, Nov. 1894, and No.2, Dec. 1894, are on file at the Kansas
state Historical Society in Topeka. Mr. Hart asks that anyone having knowledge
of other possible editions of School News which may contain other writings by
HART children, please contact him at 4001 Jean Ave., Bethpage, NY 11714-4521.

A JOLLY EVENING, by Carl HART, grade 7
School News, Vol. 1, No.2, Dec 1894
One bright moonlight evening my cousin James and I took a span of mules
and the farm wagon and started out with a load of girls to a taffy pulling.
One mule was black about sixteen hands high with one ear frozen off. The
other was a small white mule.
We put some hay in the wagon and all sat down in the bottom. The mules
trotted along quite freely over stones and stumps until we came to a steep
hill with a ditch on each side. We went along gradually until we got about
half way up when the mules suddenly concluded they had too much to pull and
set to backing as mules will, and all I could do did not persuade them to go
on but backed until both wheels on one side of the wagon dropped into the
ditch and over went the wagon and a lot of screaming girls. One got her wrist
sprained another her foot hurt. The rest were unhurt except a few bumps and
bruises. We set the wagon up again, climbed in and went on.
.
We soon arrived at the house and were soon romping and playing. One boy
very eager for some taffy bit into a large chunk and got his teeth fast and
had to sit and hold his jaws until the taffy melted. He then got up and put it
into a girl's hair which was hanging loose. She tried to get it out but could
not and had to cut her hair off.
The fun went on until late and many laughable pranks were played.
At last the crowd became tired and bid each other goodnight and started
for home.

LIONS, by Floyd HART, 2nd grade
School News, Vol. 1, No.2, Dec. 1894
Lions live in the dark forest in rocky caves.
Young lions look like little kittens.
I would like to see a lion.
They are not like other animals and if you would get near one it would eat you
up.

LEAVES, by Alice HART, 1st grade
school News, Vol. 1, No.2, Dec 1894
Most leaves turn brown and yellow in the fall.

POSTCARD FROM ELY, NEVADA TO TOPEKA, KANSAS
Earlier this year, the Ely Daily Times of Ely, White
Pine Co., Nevada printed a 75 year-old picture of the
White Pine High School which had been mailed from Ely on
8 November 1914 by R.H.W. to Mrs. E.E. WARREN in Topeka,
Kansas. The back of the photo had been used as a post
card. R.H.W. wrote that he or she had finally broken
into Ely society for the first time and attended a
"little party."."We are having a fine fall here. This is
~ picture of the high school that I snapped the other
day." The card has been donated to the high school.
