THE JESSEE FAMILY OF BLOOMINGTON
The following article was prepared from information supplied by Martha Parker:
History of Kansas, by Andreas - Osage county; Obituaries of J.W., Charlie,
Emma, Hinton, and Carrie Jessee from the Free Press, Osage Co., KS; Lawrence
Journal-World, Variety SectionC, Sunday 15 May 1988; Kansas Territorial
Census of 1855, District No.2; Clinton Township, Douglas Co., KS census of
1860, p.223.; Handwritten obituary of Mrs. William Jessee (Nancy Weaver),
author unknown, but notation is made of a copyright 1982 by Joanna L.
Stratton. Sources submitted by Judy Sweets. Article prepared by the editor.
James Wilson
JESSEE was born March 8,
1838 in McLean County,
Illinois, eldest son and
2nd child of William J.
JESSEE and Nancy WEAVER.
James' father was born
in 1809, one of 13
children born to William
J. JESSEE (son of John
JESSEE and Frances LEA)
and Mary VERMILLION,
both of whom had been
born in Caswell County,
North Carolina. James'
mother, Nancy (WEAVER)
JESSEE, was born June
16, 1809 in West
Virginia, daughter of
William WEAVER (son of
James JESSEE family c.1897. Photo courtesy Watkins Museum.
James WEAVER and Nancy
SMITH) and Mary SIMS
(daughter of James and Elizabeth SIMS). James' parents were married March 3,
1831, and moved to Illinois in 1837. Young James grew up on his parents' farm.
In 1853 or 1854, when James was 16 years old, the JESSEEs came to
Douglas County, Kansas, settling on a farm at Bloomington, which is now
Clinton, about nine miles from Lawrence. When they first arrived in Lawrence,
there were only sod houses and one frame building in the town, and the border
wars fought over whether Kansas Territory should permit slavery soon were
raging. The JESSEE family in 1855 included, besides James ,and his parents,
Mary, Nancy R., David H., Martha, Esther, and Hannah, all of whom had been
born in Illinois. In 1860, David H. (age 18), Martha (age 16), Hestes
(probably should be Esther, age 12) and Hannah (age 10) were still living with
their parents, as were several "laborers": James McCOOK, A.L. MOTE, John W.
McPHERSON, B. BITZEL, and J.H. MORRIS. Nancy had died in 1858 at age 18.
William JESSEE was one of the first men elected to the Kansas
Territorial Legislature and a founder of the Clinton community.
James was active in the Free State cause, serving under Col. Sam WALKER
and John BROWN. He was often sent out on explorations and spy missions, where
his youthful "greenhorn" appearance kept him from suspicion. He helped storm
Fort Titus and helped rout the McGEEs. He accompanied Col. WALKER to Brown
County to meet Jim LANE, who was on his way to Kansas with a large body of
men, and to Lecompton after Free State men were held as prisoners there.

63

Mrs. Nancy JESSEE once saved James LANE from capture by Quantrill's men,
and he thanked her by giving her his picture, which she highly prized.
On July 28, 1861, James enlisted in Company K, Eighth Regiment of the
Illinois Infantry at Bloomington, Illinois, and as part of that unit took part
in the Civil War engagements at Fort Donelson, Fort Henry, Pittsburg Landing,
Champion Hills, Raymond, Jackson (Mississippi), Vicksburg, Slocumb's six days
running fight, and many skirmishes. He was discharged August 2, 1864, with the
rank of Sergeant.
While James was off fighting in the war in 1862, his sister Esther, age
14, died and was buried in a cemetery on the family's Clinton farm.
James returned to Bloomington, McLean County, Illinois where he married
Maria STANDIFERD on July 13, 1865. The next year be brought his bride to
Douglas county and briefly settled at Bloomington.
In the summer of 1868 James took up farming on the Marais des Cygnes
River near Olivet and Arvonia, Osage County, Kansas. James was also a
Universalist Minister and a member of Arvonia Lodge 54, I.O.O.F., and the
Reading G.A.R. Post. His obituary described him as "an enthusiast in anything
he undertook," and he was affectionately called "Uncle Jim" by his friends and
acquaintances.
In 1870, James's father William passed away, and he was buried with his
daughters Nancy and Esther (whose graves were moved from the farm) in Oak Hill
Cemetery, Lawrence. James's mother Nancy came to live at James' home. She died
there on her 90th birthday and was buried in Arvonia Cemetery. Only three of
her eleven children survived her.
James and Maria JESSEE had nine children: Lincoln and Logan S., twins,
born March 21, 1867; Ida May, born May 18, 1870; James W., born July 5, 1871;
Hinton Grant, born December 9, 1873; John Wilson, born January 22, 1876;
Charles T., born July 21, 1878; Emma Bell, born December 18, 1880; Frank
Arthur, born April 10, 1883; and Carrie, born about 1886.
In the late summer of 1897, Charlie, age 19, and Emma, nearly 17, both
died on a saturday within a few hours of each other of a very sudden and swift
illness, which Dr. FISHER of Reading and Dr. ZANE of Osage City pronouced as
pernicious malarial fever.
Hinton, age 23, Frank, age 14, and Carrie, age 11,
were also stricken and ten days later Hinton and Carrie died. They were buried
in Arvonia Cemetery. Hinton had just been preparing to enter his second year
at the state Normal School in Emporia.
Following this horrible tragedy, the local paper informed its readers
that "Mr. JESSEE's folks have shut up their house and left the place for the
present. Although the cause of their sickness has not been definitely
determined it did not seem wise that they should stay there any longer. Mr.
and Mrs. JESSEE and son Frank are with relatives at Reading and John is under
the good care of J.H. BUCKMAN and family here, and all will have a better
chance to recuperate after their terrible siege. Lincoln JESSEE, twin brother
to Logan, and who lives farther up the river on the SANDERSON farm, was unable
to be at the funeral Sunday, but it is hoped he will soon be better and not
get clear down. The son-in-law, John SCHROEDER, was also unable to be there,
and the entire family are worn out from their prolonged care and grief."
James died at his farm on April 17, 1907. Four sons and one daughter
were surviving, and all were present when he died. One son came all the way
from California, another from Colorado.
On May 8, 1988, descendants of William JESSEE came to Oak Hill Cemetery
in Lawrence to dedicate a new headstone for his grave. The location of the
grave had been lost until discovered by Douglas County Genealogical Society
member Jean SNEDEGER while taking a cemetery census. The new headstone reads,
"William J. JESSEE, 1809-1870, Believer in freedom for Kansas."

CLAIM OF WILLIAM JESSEE BEFORE THE U.S. CONGRESS
Kansas Claims
Congress, 2nd
university of
researched by

can be found in u.s. House of Representative documents, 36th
session, at-the Government Documents department, Mallot Hall,
Kansas, call numbers 1106 and 1107. This claim, No. 206, was
the editor.

To the Commissioners of claims under act of February 7, 1859.
The undersigned, William JESSEE, respectfully represents that he is a
citizen of Kansas Territory, and has been such citizen ever since February,
1855. He now resides and since February, 1855, aforesaid, has resided on SW.
1/4 S. 13, T. 13, R. 18, near Bloomington, in Douglas county.
Petitioner further represents that he has sustained losses by reason of
the disorders which prevailed in this Territory from November 1, 1855, till
December 1, 1856, for which he claims indemnity, viz:
That the Territory of Kansas, and particularly the county of Douglas, in
which petitioner resides, was invaded by a numerous and hostile body of armed
men in the months of November and December, 1855, whose avowed object and
design was the destruction of the city of Lawrence and the expUlsion of all
but pro-slavery settlers; petitioner, exerCising his rights as a free citizen,
was known and recognized as a free-State man, opposed to slavery, and as such
was elected a member of the first legislative assembly which met at Pawnee,
where the majority of said body voted out petitioner and other free-State men
who held the governor's certificates of election to that body. As such member
petitioner knows that he was obnoxious to the pro-slavery men and their aiders
and abettors, and when the circumstances arose known as the Wakarusa war,
deponent felt that he was not safe in his life or property while said body of
armed and hostile men, most of whom had been drawn from the State of Missouri,
were assembled and arrayed against the peacable citizens of the Territory.
Knowing that he and his neighbors and friends were in danger from said hostile
forces, petitioner, responding to the call and martial law orders issued by
General LANE, allowed his horses, wagons, and other property to be used for
the common defense. And in such service a valuable horse belonging to him, and
worth $150, was used up and destroyed, that said horse died on the 13th of
December, having been severely ridden and used while petitioner was employed
in actual service of said Territory, as will appear by his discharge, hereto
annexed.
Petitioner further shows that he has never received any compensation for
said horse from any source whatever. WILLIAM JESSEE
HEADQUARTERS KANSAS VOLUNTEERS, Lawrence City, December 11, 1855.
This is to certify that William JESSEE faithfully and gallantly served
as aid in the general's staff of Kansas volunteers, from the 27th day of
November, 1855, to the 11th day of December, 1855, in defending the city of
Lawrence, in Kansas Territory, from demolition by foreign invaders; when he
was honorably discharged from said service. C. ROBINSON, Major General Kansas
Volunteers.
TERRITORY OF KANSAS, Douglas County, ss:
On this 26th day of April, 1859, personally appeared before me the above
named William JESSEE, who, being duly sworn, saith: That the facts stated in
the above petition are true. WILLIAM JESSEE.
Sworn to before me this 26th
day of April, 1859. EDWARD HOOGLAND, Commissioner.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, ss:
Alexander E. LOVE, being duly sworn, saith: I reside in Bloomington,
Douglas county; I resided with him in Bloomington township in 1856, and until
about a year ago. I remember a certain horse that he had in November and
December, 1855; he was 'a bay horse, five or six years old - a good animal. The
horse was brought to Lawrence during the trouble known as the Wakarusa war,
and was taken and used from time to time by various persons for scouting
parties or other service that circumstances required. I was with the forces in
Lawrence at the time mentioned. The horse was always ready, and used for any
of the service as though he were public property. He was in good order and
condition when brought to Lawrence in November. After the dispersion of the
Missouri forces assembled against Lawrence, Mr. JESSEE and I returned home.
His horse was then about used up, and died in one or two days afterwards. He
was destroyed in the public service. The horse was worth $150 or more. I know
that at one time, before he went into the service, Mr. JESSEE was offered $200
for that horse, and declined it. ALEXANDER E. LOVE.
Sworn to before me this
29th day of April, 1859. EDWARD HOOGLAND, Commissioner.

CORRECTION TO FARMER'S MAIL AND BREEZE DIRECTORY - TUCKER/DEAY
Norma Jardon of Baldwin City, Kansas informs us that on page 34 of Vol. XIV of
The Pioneer, the Kansas Farmer and Mail & Breeze Directory entry for Louis R.
TUCKER mistakenly identifies his wife as Dora DEAN. Her name was Dora DEAY. We
thank Norma for bringing this to our attention, and hope that others spotting
errors will also let us know. Editors were not infallible in 1920, either.

THE HOMES OF WINNIE SMITH LYONS
In 1939, Winnie Smith Lyons wrote Reminiscence of Early Day Kansas, which is
now in the Kansas Collection at the Spencer Library, University of Kansas.
This excerpt was submitted by Judy Sweets of the Watkins Museum.
"The winter of 1857-58 we lived in a small log house in Twin Mounds. In 1863
we moved to a house in Lawrence owned by George HUNT on 6th Street. Then we
moved to a house near 7th st. just west of National Bank. Later moved to a
house which was owned by Mrs. KELLAM on the west side of New Hampshire in the
block south of the post office. We moved back to the farm in 1869 and I was
married from the Old Homestead in 1875."

MEMORIAL TO LUCIE A. (CARRUTH) WOOD
August 26, 1845 - December 26, 1897
This memorial was printed for Mrs. WOOD's funeral, and is a sermon by Richard
CORDLEY, D.O., delivered 28 December 1897 at Plymouth Church, Lawrence,
Kansas. The original is contained in the Tracy LEARNARD Scrapbook, Vol. 3, at
the Elizabeth Watkins Community Museum in Lawrence. Researched by the editor.

Lucie A. CARRUTH was born at Cherry Valley, NY, August 26, 1845. In 1856
her parents removed to Kansas, under the common impulse of freedom which
stirred the whole North. Her father, a minister and a teacher all his life,
settled upon a farm, or rather a claim, not far from Osawatomie.
Old settlers will remember the varied
trials of those early days.' First came the
exciting turbulence of 1856-'57; then the dreary
waiting for three years for the returning
prosperity which failed to return; then the
famine of 1860, when the cornfields shriveled
and the gardens died; and then came the War of
the Rebellion, which stirred the whole nation,
but Kansas more than any other section. During
these years Mr. CARRUTH, a teacher and not a
farmer, was trying to develop a farm from a
Kansas prairie claim. Those who have ever
observed the process do not need to be told how
tedious and slow a process it is. That unfailing
visitor to the pioneer cabin, known among the
the old settlers as the "chills" entered this
new home, and they all shook by turns, and then
worked the alternate days. The mother, always
somewhat of an invalid, was laid aside much of
the time, and the care of the home and younger
children fell upon the brave girl of eleven
summers. Thus early did the responsibilities of
life fall upon her. At the age of sixteen she
commenced teaching school to aid in the
maintenance of the home.
In 1863 Mr. CARRUTH was appointed professor of natural science in Baker
University, at Baldwin, a position for which he was admirably fitted, and in
which he did excellent service for three years. Here Lucie had some of the
advantages for which she hungered, and above all she was able to gratify her
love of music, and to secure something of the training she had thus far been
deprived of.
In 1866 ~he family removed to Lawrence, and Lucie entered the State
University. She was a member of the first class which entered that
institution, and was one of the first pupils taught by him who is now honored
Chancellor of the University - Chancellor F.H. SNOW. Professor SNOW, a young
man fresh from Eastern schools, commenced his career as a teacher when she
commenced her work as a student. A schoolmate and intimate friend speaks of
the excellence of her work in the University, and of her enthusiasm for
learning. She speaks especially of her work in Latin, in which her
translations were as classic as the tongue from which she read. Had she

67

remained in the University she would have been one of the first graduates of
the institution. But at home there was a family of brothers growing up to the
years when they needed the benefit of schools, and with the unselfishness
which always characterized her, she accepted a position to teach that her
brothers might have an opportunity to learn. That it cost a struggle to make
this sacrifice, is evident from the fact that to the last she often referred
with regret to her failure to finish her course of study in the University.
Those who knew her in later life as intimate friends or as pupils will testify
that her personal application had largely made up for this early lack.
She was married to Mr. E.W. WOOD in 1869, but her love of teaching was
such that she continued her work for some time, and when she finally withdrew
from public service she gave much of her time to private teaching, and more
than one can testify that they were inspired with a love of learning by her
enthusiasm, and were helped over hard places by her fidelity and skill.
Of her early religious life I only know what one might infer from her
later character and conduct. She had that earnestness of purpose, that
fidelity to duty, that unselfishness to principle, which only grow from the
early planting of religious conviction and life. She connected herself with
Plymouth Church in'1868, and has always been a faithful member, interested and
active in all lines of Christian activity. She was quiet and modest, and never
obtrusive, but she never failed in what she thought was her duty. In the
church service as an interested worshipper, in the Sunday-school as a faithful
and very capable teacher, in the Women's Missionary Society as a contributor
and helper, in the prayer-meeting as a regular attendant and thoughtful
participant, she will long be remembered and long be missed. She never said
much in the prayer-meeting, but when she spoke it was always the expression of
a genuine conviction or a profound experience.
My last recollection of her in prayer-meeting was last July, I think not
long before my summer vacation. The meeting was one of those rare occassions
when the thought of the evening seemed to drift along from one to another, and
each one added something to the common stock. Everyone received what each one
gave, and so the tender interest kept accumulating to the end. As the hour for
closing came I was wondering how to close so as not to mar the frame of mind
which was evidently on us all. As I glanced over the company my eyes rested
upon Mrs. WOOD, who had sat in silence during the evening, but evidently her
thought was with the rest. Her quiet face solved my perplexity, and I asked
her to lead us in a closing prayer. In the choicest yet simplest speech, and
in tenderest words, she voiced the petition which was in every heart, and it
seemed as if we were all just talking with the Master. It was one of those
wonderful prayers which God sometimes gives His children when they sit
together and talk of the deep things of life. She was in fullest sympathy with
the common thought, and so evidently at home in talking with the Master, that
all could feel that it was no new thing to her. I did not know that anyone
else noticed the peculiar aptness and beauty of that prayer; but in referring
to it yesterday I found that others were as much impressed by it as I was
myself. I do not remember seeing her in prayer-meeting after that. I am so
glad to have this as my final picture of her in my mind. Her quiet, earnest
face; her tender tones; her choice words; her fervent spirit, and the hush
that fell in all the room, will abide as a beautiful memory of a beautif~l
character ••••

memorial precedes this article, was taken from the Tracy Learnard Scrapbook,
Volume 3, at the Watkins Community Museum. The clipping is not dated nor the
paper identified, but the article is datelined "Lawrence Kas., Dec. 15."

William Herbert CARRUTH, professor of comparative languages at Leland
Stanford university and a graduate of the University of Kansas in the class of
1880, died this morning at Maywood, Cal., according to word received here by

He married twice. His first wife was Miss Frances SCHLEGEL, an
instructor in the German department of the university, whom he married in
1882. Her culture and forcefulness were said to have been of greatest
assistance to him in his work for many years. Her death occurred in 1908. In
1910 he married Miss Katherine MORTON, formerly a student of the university.
Professor CARRUTH made several trips to Germany. In 1896 he attended
Berlin and Munich one semester each. He took a master's degree at Harvard in
1889 and a doctor of philosophy degree there in 1893.

PETERSON PIONEERS FROM THE YEAR 1867
By Mrs. (A.R.) Harriet Hunter KENNEDY. Submitted to The Pioneer in 1983 by
Kathryn Bunton, and just recently discovered.

In the early days shared by our ancestors, my maternal grandfather,
Joseph PETERSON, came over from Sweden one year in advance of his family, and
established a home for them here in Lawrence. At one time Grandfather operated
a blacksmith shop in the Old Windmill on North Hill, and was later a stone
mason. He helped with the building of Haskell Institute.
My maternal grandmother, Anna Ermat PETERSON, came with her three
children to America, and on to Lawrence, Kansas in the year 1868. My mother
was Anna PETERSON, and was nine years old when she came over the Atlantic
ocean on the steamship "The Great Eastern."
She later married Eli Bloom HUNTER, my father, who was born in a hamlet
near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where as a yo~ng husky boy he rode logs with
the lumbermen down the Susquehanna River during the logging season.
My father was one of the first persons to erect a home in the 1300 block
on Haskell Avenue. His lot extended from the avenue a long distance back to
the Ottawa Branch of railroad track at the rear. He had a wonderful garden and
raised large tomatoes, sweet corn, and huge flat purple and white turnips.
The John HASKELL family lived across the road from our family and the
MAFFETs lived south on this road. As there was no name for the road or street,
my mother had her mail addressed to Haskell Avenue because of the prominence
of the HASKELL family, and this name has been used from that day to this.
My father, Eli B. HUNTER, sold windmills to farm folk allover Kansas in
the early days and later sold organs, and Standard sewing machines. If he were
living he would be 112 years of age.
Mother was ten years younger than he and lived to 95 years and eleven
months old.
They were wonderful parents and raised five children here in Lawrence,
in this good old sunflower state of Kansas, and I am one of them, being now
the wife of Dr. Bert KENNEDY.

KENNEDY CLAN TRAVELS WESTWARD FROM IRELAND TO KANSAS
By Dr. Albert R. KENNEDY. Submitted by Kathryn Bunton in 1983 with the
previous article by his wife.

In the British Isles where I first find my Scotch-Irish ancestors, it
was just a few miles west from Scotland to Ireland, mostly because of
religious differences, often just in the big family. Came the day when my clan
is angry with both Catholics and Protestants, so they make a sail across the
seas to America. In those days clans were clannish so they did not mix with
the Quakers of Philadelphia nor with the Pennsylvania Dutch. Both tribes were
pacifists. Also the Dutch in New York and the Swedes in Delaware couldn't
speak English so the KENNEDYs in great numbers crowd up the Delaware, chased
out the Connecticut Yankees and landed near Valley Forge, then to a place
called Port Kennedy.
Climbing the hills and mountains is quite a chore. So many turned south
and soon came to the Shenandoah Valley. other~ persisted westward and helped
Pittsburgh become the great American city known as the "Scotch-Irish City."
Always in pursuit of land, free land was our American Colonies and later
the u.S. Government failed to pay their soldiers, and some of the older ones
were entitled to homesteads. Now - it was Ohio. But the Indians, our own
Shawnees, Delawares and Wyandottes held their ground.
Floating down the Ohio, the settlers lived a few years in Kentucky where
Daniel BOONE had cleared out the Indians with three campaigns finally leading
the defeat of the Indians. Then the Treaty of Greenville gave the settlers
free land.
Flooding of the Ohio River and its results gave my people in another
half century the urge to go west again. Many had gone to Indiana, then across
the Wabash into Illinois, and while here in that historic state the Kansas
fever overtook them. Homestead laws gave every citizen 160 acres of land for
$1.25 an acre. But ahead of the settlers must come the explorers. So it was in
the spring of 1854, three horsemen rode out of Bluff City in Schuyler County,
going west. The three were my oldest uncle, and head of the family, William
Brinbridge KENNEDY, and uncle by marriage William CURLESS, and John P. WOOD,
an Irish born doctor, later to become a great figure in the Kansas struggle
over slavery.
Out of Westport, Missouri on the Oregon Trail these men rode west and
sighted Blue Mound. Later t'o climb the Devil's Hogback, now Mount Oread. A
look south and they saw the Wakarusa and the Pleasant Hills, and here they
decided to bring their families.
Thirteen wagon loads of men, women and children. Oxen and covered
wagons, extra cattle and young stock made the trip which was a long one. But
in thirty days they crossed the Missouri River on a Choteau Ferry, and that
night camped by the willows of the "Promised Land."
By early morning they were ready to move, but a throng of Wyandotte
Indians (themselves from Ohio) made a courtesy call on our clan. A horse race,
a wrestling match and the women's flapjacks appeased the noble red man, and so
westward again. This time on the Santa Fe Trail. They made it to Black Jack,
and an early start brought them to the brow of what we call Baldwin Hill. What
a splendid view they saw, Blue Mound on the right, and our present Mount Oread
to the left, and clear across the Kaw Valley to the Delaware Hills. Here they
stopped the long oxen train, by this time counting up to twenty and "took in"
the scene and vowed in their hearts never to move again. They took land from
Blue Mound to Lone Star.

COFFIN, HANNAM, POOL
Seeking information on family of Odom POOL, who, with his second wife Melissa
(maiden name unknown) and son Francis Asbury Pool came to Kansas from Vernon,
Jennings Co., IN in 1858. They settled between Blackjack and Wellsville. On 11
Apr 1864 Odom sold the SE quarter, Section 5, Township 15, Range 25 to H.N.
BROCKWAY and moved with Melissa to Montana, where he died at an unknown
location in 1867. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions to aid in
determining the date and from whom Odom POOL acquired this property. Son
Francis married Harriet Isabell BANNAM, daughter of Thomas Higgins and Jane
(COFFIN) BANNAM, who came from Kenosha, WI in 1856/7 and settled in the same
area as Odom POOL. Francis remained in the Wellsville area until he died in
1929 at age 86. James C.T. POOL, 64 Militia Hill Drive, Wayne, PA 19087-5846.

BANISTER, IRELAND, ROSE, SANDERS
Seeking information on Blanche ROSE, daughter of James Mortimer and Anna ROSE.
She married L.D. "Dick" BANISTER and lived in 1943 at 26 S. Valley, probably
Kansas City, KS. She had a daughter, Rose Marie BANISTER, who married Millard
IRELAND and broadcast from a Lawrence, KS radio station in the 1940's. Will
share information. Elizabeth SANDERS, R. 5, Box 366, Warrensburg, MO 64093.

ROSE, SANDERS
Seeking information on George Washington ROSE who probably lived near Lakeview
or Lecompton in Douglas Co., KS during the Civil War. He probably was in
service during the war. His children were James Mortimer, Agatha and Agnes.
His wife was Elizabeth Ann. Will share information. Elizabeth Sanders, R.5,
Box 366, Warrensburg, MO 64093.
