THE HAlfPSHIRE AND DEERING FAlfILIES
Mark B. Hampshire submitted notes from various sources from ~ihich this article
was prepared: Hampshire, Levi W., genealogical and biographical description of
the Hampshire family; Hull, The Stahl Family; Owens, Inez M... Hampshire family
notes; Hampshire, Mark A., From Maine to Kansas.

Emanuel HAMPSHIRE was born July 18, 1835 in Seneca County, Ohio, son of
Jonas and Mary (SWOPE) HAMPSHIRE. On January 4, 1857, he married Sarah STAHL,
born September 2, 1840, Seneca County, Ohio, to Jacob and Tena (SMITH) STAHL.
They subsequently had several children, among them William H. and Levi Wesley,
born June 14, 1867. The family spoke and read German in their home, and
Emanuel loved to work with timber.
Sometime after Levi's birth the family moved to a farm near Garnett,
Kansas. Emanuel tried to interest his sons in the farm, but each one in turn
completed his education and left to seek greener pastures elsewhere. Finally
only Levi and his younger brother Jesse were left, and Emanuel turned over
management of the farm to Levi, setting aside the money made from hog-raising
to finance Levi's first year at Lane University.
While attending Lane, Levi taught at a country school during the winter
months and helped his father on the farm during the summer. He studied
English, grammar, mathematics, history and German. And he also met a tall,
slender, dark-eyed young lady named Maria Emma DEERING, born April 12, 1868 at
Blackjack in Douglas County, Kansas to John Henry and Cornelia (GIFFORD)
DEERING. Her father was born February 21, 1833 in Bath, Maine, son of John and
Sarah B. DEERING. Her mother was born October 27, 1842 in Kane Co., Illinois,
daughter of Hezekiah and Mary Jane (SMITH) GIFFORD.
The DEERING family lived in Prairie City in Douglas County until shortly
after the Civil War. Prairie City had begun with much hope for the future,
anticipating the railroad to come through the town and spur it:s growth. But
the railroad located the depot about half a mile north in what: had become
Media, or West Baldwin, and the village of Baldwin was growin9 up around Baker
University. Emma's father tried to make a living hand-making wooden products,
but he was competing against manufactured goods, and as not only his business
and the town itself dwindled, his lungs and heart also began to fail him, and
he was forced to dispose of his business as best he could. He moved his family
to North Lawrence, where he established a drug store. After only five years,
his health again forced him to sell, and he passed away December 12, 1880.
Emma's mother moved the family to a small farm at the edge of Lawrence, and
family members were forced to work at extra jobs to keep the family going.
Emma's older brother John became a traveling salesman for Morell Packing
Company. Her younger brother Sam became a printer. The younges't son, Albert,
entered the regular Army. The youngest child, Adah, stayed with her mother,
and after completing her schooling, taught school in Lawrence. Emma's mother
Cornelia lived until 1900, when she died on October 4th at Lawrence.
Soon after Emma and Levi graduated from Lane University, they were
married on December 21, 1890, by the Rev. A.H. STOTE. They livE~d on the
Hampshire farm. Levi was good at inventing labor-saving devices, and was
interested in scientific approaches to farming. He contacted the new
Agricultural College at Manhattan, Kansas, and they sent him pamphlets about
new experiments, and grains and new seed corn for testing.
In the fall of that year, the college organized a contest at Garnett,
and prizes would be given for the best ten ears of corn. Levi selected samples

grown from the seed the college had sent him, and easily won the contest, even
though one of the ears had a red cob. His report of the number of bushels
shelled per acre of corn also exceeded any other, and a professor from the
college took this opportunity to lecture to the assembled farmers on the
wonders the college and science had to offer. Over the years, Levi's farm
became a place where his neighbors could see the positive results of his
experiments with new and better corn, new dairy herd management techniques,
and scientific poultry raising. He had one of the first John Deere grain
binders in the county. Levi's goal, however, was to enter the teaching
profession and eventually become a school administrator, even though it took
him many years to accomplish it.
As the century drew to a close, Emma's health was failing due to
injuries she had received as a girl when she had been dragged by a team of
horses. Her brothers had come in from the field with a team dragging a pair of
double-trees, and Emma. had begged them to let her drive the team to the barn.
The team became frightened at the dragging double-trees and bolted, and Emma
could not stop them. Several ribs were broken as she was dragged over the
ground, but the injury went undiagnosed, and untreated. Later in life it
developed into cancer. The doctor had a surgeon come from Kansas City, and
they operated on Emma on the kitchen table. She became aninvali.d, unable to
do the housework, gardening and other duties required of a farm wife.
Levi sold the farm at a
public sale and moved to Garnett
in Anderson County. He took and
passed the necessary examinations
to obtain a teaching certificate,
and his long put-off dream was
soon realized.
Emma died March 27, 1910 at
Garnett. Levi's mother Sarah died
there on June 4, 1913, and his
father Emanuel on October 22,
1923. Levi himself remarried and
lived until the age of 82, when
he died at Garnett on June 3,
1949.
Levi and Emma had a
daughter Ruth, born about 1891,
and died about 1945. Their son,
Mark Anthony HAMPSHIRE, was born
..
July 27, 1893 near Garnett, and
married March 20, 1919 Katherine
Cordelia LAZENBY, daughter of

... ',
Frederick Dean and Anna Adeline
(PARSONS) LAZENBY, as his first
wife. She died March 3, 1963 at

LE'l'TER OF RElfElfBRANCE FROB VIRDILLA (lfcGEEJ

GAl1IfER

Written and submitted by Bobby Dobbins Title.

Among the early settlers of the Kaw Valley of Douglas county were two
large families, the CORELs, coming from Virginia via Westport, and the McGEEs,
from center county, Pennsylvania. There were three COREL/McGEE marriages:
William COREL and Margaret McGEE, James P. COREL and Susannah McGEE, and
Olivia COREL and John J. McGEE.
The latter two families lived their entire lives on land they
homesteaded east of Lawrence. Olivia and John's oldest daughter, Virdilla,
born in 1861, married George GAUMER in 1881 at the old home place. They
shortly moved to Mexico, where Dr. GAUMER was engaged in biological research.
The following letter, sent by Virdi11a from Mexico, reflects on "old" times in
the Kaw Valley.
September 26, 1912
My dear Mother, Brothers and Sisters,
Your very kind and welcome letters received six weeks ago. And dear
brother, your happy reminiscences of our dear old home and childhood
associates brings a mist before my eyes. The cherished memories of childhood
are indeed precious, as we have left the scenes of our early childhood, still
memory dwells lovingly on those past scenes and youthful pleasures and happy
pasttimes. You ask, did I remember the old set? Our set? Bless them, I
remember everyone of them. When we used to make up the invitations to our
juvenile parties, we put on our list -- our grammar wasn't just as Antoinette
WILLIAMS, our "school marm," might have permitted, but our hearts were
sincere. We began the list: "Let's see," Me and Bush, Em and Al, 011, Kate and
Ella. Nell and Lizzie KENNEDY, Jennie WALKER, and Lid CORNILUS. And the Boys,
oh the boys, the Romeos and Hiawathas, we were particular. Always first on the
program, "Bugyotzy," Ollie's pet name for Watson SPERRY, then Jim SPERRY,
Charlie WILCOX, John and Will GARRET. Orson would never accept our invitation;
he was too shy. Then E.H. - Jack, John WALKER, Marshall WHITE, and Willie
CHARLTON, the "town boy." He was a friend of the SPERRYs. How our hearts did
flutter with anticipation of the happy evening. You younger boys were not
included in the invitation, you were too young. Yes, Dick, I remember Billie
NOE. He was tall, very square shouldered and bright blue eyes. And Carl
TOBLER, he was a great big overgown, sandy-haired, stub-towed braggart, the
biggest coward in school. He had a pick at little Jim McGEE. Jim tolerated his
browbeating, until one day it reached the limit, so Jim piled on to him one
day and pounded him up. Jim was on top of Carl, laying it to him, with teeth
and toenail. When Carl called out "Boys, pull me out, I'm killing him," to the
contrary he was receiving the pounding. Carl never heard the last of "Boys,
pull me out. I'm killing him."
Dick, you are right about the geographical memory of old SCE~nes. When we
went back to the U.S. nineteen years ago, George and I drove out on the old
familiar road - in passing our old homestead, we stopped to look over the old
familiar scenes, to the south Hawkins pasture, where we used to gather sweet
williams and stawberries, to the right Uncle Jim's hill describing a horse
shoe curve to the little brick school house. This hill looked so small, yet
when I was at home, it seemed as high as Mt. Everest. Our old barn looked so

Letter of Remembrance from Virdilla (McGee) Gaumer, continued.

big to me, when we children used to jump off the back platform, but the years
had reduced it in size.
And the dear hardworking old farm horses, what magnificent big animals
they were. I remember everyone of them, first Jack and Pet, the grays we
called them, because they were a beautifully matched team, bl3side their stall,
the big mules Jack and Jinny, on the north side of the stable Frank and
Barney, then out east of the stable there was a smaller stable where Billie
was kept. He was my riding pony. He was a beauty. I used to feed him raw eggs
to make his coat shine.
I remember well the day Billy got into a tantrum and might have killed
me. Dear Father was awful mad, his Irish was up and he certainly humiliated
Billy with the thrashing he gave him. He never repeated that stunt but once.
When I rode to the University to attend the Oriphillian society, as I was
mounting, he jumped sideways. I had not gotten well seated, 80 I just slid to
the ground, but I kept a hold of the rein. One of the student:s came to my
assistance. He held Billy while I got on, he trembled allover, either
something was the matter with him, or it was simply pent up energy. When I
rode off he was all right.
So the dear old school house has lived its time; What fond recollections
cling to that temple of learning, of course we didn't burden our minds
overmuch with study. We hurried through our lessons, waiting for the happy
recess, when we could go up on the hill in front of Vooches, climb up into the
very top of a hickory nut tree and swing back and forth, until the top nearly
touched the ground. We were careful to pick a slender tree which bends and
doesn't break. In the winter we climbed the trees back of the school house for
wild grapes, when the school bell rang we went into the school room with
purple lips and teeth. Oh, but those grapes tasted sweet, and the bitter
pignuts were sweeter to us there than the brazilian nuts today which grow so
abundantly here in Mexico. A couple of years later, after Mr. VERNON, Mr.
YANCEY, and a black eyed lady teacher, I don't recall her name, the two Misses
PEARSON. Then George took charge of our school. I was sixteen then. I thought
I was quite a young lady. In place of climbing trees and playing black-man,
our teacher took us out in search of botanical specimens, and an insect,
called the "cicenola," it is rare, as was found only around Oak Hill. The year
after that I entered the University. Your letter has certainly awakened all
those fond memories, which were lying dormant ..• "

THE CITY OF CLEARFIELD

The following was extracted from Clearfield History 1858-1976, printed in
pamphlet form by the Bicentenniel History Committee, 1976. Submitted by Zona
Smith.
The city of Clearfield was organized in 1885. It consisted of a General
store, Post Office, cooperative Creamery, Blacksmith Shop and Barber Shop. Mr.
John GLASER built the general store in 1885 and also ran the post office. He
named the new town Clearfield after Clearfield, Pennsylvania, the town they
had migrated from. Lou HAAS, Andrew SCHENDEL and Gideon BREITHAUPT,
respectively, ran the store and post office - the latter purchasing them in
1905 and selling the store in 1921. This was a busy little store in a
progressive community. Farmers brought their cream and eggs and exchanged them
for groceries, dry goods, shoes, candy, material, etc. They also came to pick
up their mail. The mail that was delivered to Clearf ield camE~ by way of train
to Vinland. It was delivered to Clearfield by Lew HANSON's mother once or
twice a week. She came the road straight west of Clearfield from Vinland (this
road is no longer open). Later, the mail came through the Eudora Post Office.
The cooperative creamery was run first by a Mr. AINSWORTH and then later
by Mr. Arch DEAN. It was located across the road and south of the church. The
farmers in their respective areas would take turns gathering up the others'
milk, take it on to the creamery at Clearfield where it was sepa'rated. The
separator was run by a steam engine. The cream was taken to Edgerton and
shipped to Kansas City. The milk was taken back to the farm to be fed to the
livestock. The creamery building is standing today on the farm of Mr. and Mrs.
Phil BRECHEISEN.
The blacksmith shop was operated by Mr. Edwin SHULTZ and was located
just east of the cemetery. He was kept busy shoeing horses and fixing iron
pieces that farmers around the area needed. Later a blacksmith shop was
started up by Bill SELZER and is still in operation on his son Wilfred's farm.
Ed BEARD had a blacksmith shop for a short time located north of the church,
but gave it up to go into farming.
The barber shop was north of the general store and was operated by Mr.
Andrew WISSMAN. It was opened all night as that was about the only time the
men and boys could catch him to cut their hair. On Saturday nights there would
be as many as thirty to forty fellas in the shop - "so crowded you couldn't
spit on the floor." A shave would cost the guys ten cents and a hair cut
fifteen cents.
CLEARFIELD SCHOOL
The school was located on the RODEWALD farm (east of the church). This
log cabin school house was used for community gatherings and worship services.
The first name of the school was Union. It was probably started in the 1860's
and was a large school. In 1907 it was moved about a mile west of its first
location and still is used today, as the Grange bought it for their meeting
house. Barnhardt KRAMER, William BRECHEISEN and John STURM were early school
board members. School was held at Clearfield until that district unified with
the Baldwin School system in the 1940's.
Pleasant Oak School was organized in the fall of 1907. It was built
about a mile and a half east of the church to take care of the children living
in that area. The first teacher was Carrie BLAKEMAN. The first school board
members were: George BRECHEISEN, George MEEDER and William BRECHEISEN. The

school stayed open till the fall of 1947 when the children started school in
Baldwin as the Pleasant Oak district unified with Baldwin.
CLEARFIELD GRANGE
In 1907 under the able leadership of Douglas County Master, Brother
George A. WEILER, steps were taken to organize a Grange in the Clearfield
neighborhood. On February 21 and 22, 1907, Brother WEILER with the assistance
of Brother A.P. REARDON, State Lecturer, obtained about 20 names of
prospective members. On March 4, 1907 they met at the Union school House,
later known as the Clearfield school. The group met on March 6 to complete the
organization of the Clearfield Grange #1451. Brother REARDON was asked to get
them a charter. He presented the charter to them in April.
The following officers were elected for the year of 1907: Master Harvey REED; Lecturer - Sister A.B. DEAN; Overseer - Mr. A.B. DEAN; Steward Henry McKINNEY; Assistant Steward - Fred DEAY; Chaplain - Minnie HAUSMAN;
Treasurer - Henry HAUSMAN; Secretary - William SELZER; Gatekeeper - William
VITT; Ceres - Lena BREITHAUPT; Pomona - Carrie SELZER; Flora - Emma
BREITHAUPT; Lady Assistant Steward - Eva FRYE.
On January 16, 1951 the Clearfield Grange bought the Clearfield School
House from the Baldwin School District for $50 and a half acre from Roy
BREITHAUPT.
The minutes of the Clearfield organizational meeting disclosed that some
of the important issues of the day were discussed - such as rural mail
delivery, freight rates, the Grange Insurance program, and getting good books
to read. This is characteristic of a subordinate Grange program. Since all
Grange policy is proposed and discussed first on the local level and then
passed on to the state and national levels.
The Clearfield Grange has a membership of 160. Eight of these have taken
the seventh degree. Walter BRECHEISEN, George ROHE, Fred DEAY, Paul SELZER,
William BOEHLE, Alfred SIEWALD, Herman BOHNSACK, Anna PAASCH, Homer CLARK and
Fred EDER were 50 year members.
CLEARFIELD CHURCH
In 1854 Kansas was organized as a territory. Among the early settlers
were German speaking families who had come from eastern parts of the United
States. They were members of an Evangelical Church.
The one desire they had in connection with finding a new home was to
have the church of their choice. Many appeals were made to the Church through
the Christian Botschafter and Evangelical Messenger.
In 1858, Rev. G. FLEISHER, one of the first missionaries (circuit
riders) sent to the Territory of Kansas, began a mission in the small town of
Franklin (close to Lawrence - southeast). After organizing a class there, Rev.
FLEISHER came to the Clearfield community, which was formerly known as Captain
Creek, and organized a class which became a part of the Franklin Mission. The
following early settlers were charter members: Peter BRECHEISEN and wife,
William BRECHEISEN and wife, George MEEDER and wife, Ben KRAMER and wife,
George HAUSMAN and wife. Brother MEEDER was elected Class Leader and Brother
KRAMER, Exhortor.
This was an encouraging beginning and developed into a prosperous
congregation. For many years it was one of the strongest and most influential
societies in the conference. Early meetings were held in homes. The pioneer
families walked or went to meetings in lumber wagons to one of the member's
homes to attend religious services. When the circuit rider was due for a

sunday service, word was spread about there would be a meeting at a certain
home and all the families took lunch baskets and went to spend the day at the
home where the meeting was to be held.
After a few years a log cabin school house was built on what is now the
RODEWALD farm. This was also used as the Sabbath Day meeting place. A few
years later the log cabin was weatherboarded and painted. This made it into a
cozy, warm building - the place of many community gatherings.
The first of two camp meetings in Kansas was held here in the summer of
1861. The attendance was about 100 people which included five ministers and 30
from the Clearfield Church. These camp meetings were held east of the Church
on the SCHENDEL and MEEDER farms. The main service was held in a big tent and
each family had their own tent to live in for the period of t:he camp meeting.
These pioneer German settlers were from different provinces in the Old
Country; therefore, each spoke a little different language. This made
communication and teaching in the Sunday School and Church difficult. Sermons
were all delivered in German. One pioneer lady is said to have gone to church
every Sunday to sit through the meetings, but couldn't understand a word the
minister said. The change to English was over a period of several years.
Following World War I, during the pastorate of Rev. C.E. PLA~~Z, the transition
was completed from German to the English language.
In May of 1956 the Evangelical Church merged with the United Brethren
forming the Evengelical United Brethren Church. The uniting session was held
at Wichita, Kansas. Our lay delegate was Mrs. Irene BRECHEISEN.
On October 16, 1957, Rev. Jacob NELSON had the dedication service for
the new communion table which was a gift from the George BRECHEISEN family.
On October 2, 1958 the congregation of the Clearfield Church was honored
on its 100th anniversary. Rev. NELSON, our pastor, and Conference
Superintendent Rev. H.H. VOGEL, presided at the worship service and the
afternoon fellowship. Many letters were received and shared from former
ministers, lay people and friends. Among those present were Henry DECKWA, Mrs.
William SELZER and Mrs. Emma POOCH STEVIC who were born in Germany but came to
settle at Clearfield at an early age. Mr. DECKWA came to this country with his
parents at the age of 7 years. He first attended church at Clearfield in 1883,
and after he was a little older, served as teacher and Sunday School
superintendent for 40 years. Mrs. SELZER came to America with her father when
she was three years old, settling near relatives here. Mrs. STEVIC was three
years old when her parents settled in this community and she Btarted to attend
this country place of worship.
In 1964 the congregation under the leadership of Rev. Richard BENTON,
our pastor, started planning for an educational annex. The land was donated in
1966 by Wesley DECKWA for this project. The plans consisted of' 5 classrooms
and bathrooms on the first floor with a utility room, kitchen and fellowship
hall in the basement. On March 28, 1968, a ground breaking ceremony was held
with our pastor, Rev. Clayton LEHMAN, and Conference Superintendent Rev. Max
WRIGHT, presiding.
In May, 1968 the E.U.B. Churches and Methodist Churches united to become
the United Methodist Church. This uniting service was held at Baker University
in Baldwin City, Kansas.
On December 8, 1968, consecration services were held for the new
educational building. Rev. T. Neal HIATT, District Superintendl3nt, was the
officiating minister with Rev. LEHMAN helping. In the afternoon a dedication
service was held for the new organ which was purchased in 1967 .. Mrs. Gordon
REYNOLDS presided at the organ.
One tradition still followed at Clearfield is the Christnlas tree with
candles, instead of the usual electric lights. George STURM, who for years cut

and decorated the tree and made the candle holders for the tree, wrote the_
following:
As nearly all the families that settled in the Clearfield community came
from Germany, Christmas was celebrated very much the same as the country
they left, much the same as now but everything was in the German
language. Two men and three women were on the Christmas committee, very
much the same as now. The first two men I remember was David SCHENDEL
and William SELZER -they got a nice tree and decorated it with a lot of
ornaments and a lot of popcorn strung around the tree like rope. The
candles were small and were first lighted when the program was half
over. Programs were very much the same as now, only it was all German.
Minnie BRECHEISEN was the first organist I remember - she played the
organ and sang at the same time. Gideon BREITHAUPT was the first
Superintendent I remember. Sometimes we would eat our dinner at school
then get back to school before the bell rang. Treats were much the same
as now. The little children's treats were always hung on the tree in a
red mesh bag which looked real nice. Sometimes an arch was put on the
altar rail in front of the tree about six or seven feet high and about
twelve feet wide and decorated with evergreen and ornaments. Preachers
were always well remembered with good things to eat. Many families made
the German Christmas cookies decorated with colored sugar. Christmas was
a jolly time for the young and old - it still is.
