December, 1990
The Douglas County, Kansas, Genealogical Society is beginning
another ambitious project. This letter is to introduce
the project to you and encourage your participation in it.
The Society will be publishing The Douglas County, Kansas,
Family Histories, 1991-1992 in early 1993. This volume will
portray Lawrence and its': citizens as they were in 1991-1992,
who lived here and how they came to be in this area. The
last time this sort of information was gathered and
recorded was in the late 1800's so you can see it is time
for another edition.
Every person living in Douglas County now has a history that
should be recorded for future generations to read. You are
important to this book whether your history is one year or
one hundred years in the county.
The success of this book hinges on your involvement and
efforts to participate. Please read the enclosed materials
and put your history in writing and send it to the Soeiety.
If you have any comments, or questions please don't hesitate
to call me or the committee members.
Sincerely,

Virgil O. Dresser
Virgil O. Dresser was born in 1832 and
came to Leavenworth with his father,
Joseph, in 1859 from Old Orchard Beach,
Maine. They spent the winter in: the Salt
Creek Valley with the Cody family and their
son, William (Buffalo Bill), so the story
goes. -In the 1860 census Virgil was in
Arapahoe County, Denver Township, evidently looking for gold. He returned to
Leavenworth and was a member of the
Kansas Militia, 1st Brigade. In the 1870
census he was in Leavenworth, 32 years old
and a land dealer. He married N aney
. Oldhausen with whom he had five children:
Alice, Virgil Jr., Eli C., Edmund and Ada.
Descendants of these children still live in
Leavenworth. In 1873 Virgil was listed as a
sand dealer and he had a thriving business
getting sand from the Missouri River for
many building projects in and around
Leavenworth. For a number of years, and
maybe still now, the sign for Dresser Sand
Co. was visible at his place of business on
the river. When Naney died in 1892 she was
buried in Greenwood Cemetery.· Virgil
married Henrietta Malinda Garrettson
Leslie in late 1895 or early 1896. The
children from this marriage were three
boys: James Deering, William Apple and
Samuel Lewis. Their home was on Marxen
Road on the farm home in' Prairie
Township in Wyandotte County, which as
far as can be determined Virgil bought early
for his father, Joseph, to care for .. Virgil
died in 1913. James Deering married
Grace Parisa and lived in Lawrence, Kansas. He retired from the Lawrence Fire
Department and then gardened until his
death in 1987. William Apple married
Ruth Brightwell and lived in Leavenworth
where he worked for the Leavenwonh
Times for many years until his retirement
and death in 1977. Samuel Lewis married
Hazel Higley and lived on the farm while
working as a teacher. He died in 1961.

1

All three widows survive. Ruth and
Hazel live in Lansing and Grace in
Lawrence.
Submitted by Mary Henrietta Dresser
Burchill, daughter of James Deering in
Lawrence, Kansas.

Miss nay E. Gardner-Born A. N. C. Died--~ Miss Gardner
spent her childhood in Lawrence, and also in a very successful attempt to
rival Jack's Bean-stalk. This laudable ambition has left its mark upon
Miss"Gardner's character, inasmuch as she has, from her superior elevation, a broad, comprehensive "iew of the fields of knowledge. Early in
her college course the Pi Phis, with the discernment for which they are
noted, saw an opportunity and acted upon it, pinned their colors upon
Miss Gardner, and forthwith made her permanent chairman of the decoration committee, with personal charge of the upper tier of party decora- 1
tion, thus at one fell swoop doing away with step-ladders, and making
tasteful decoration a surety. As a member of the S~nior play commitiee .
'. she has been very instrumental in assuring the success of the play,.-

Mr. O'Neil-The ~ubject of this sketch is a young man of many parts.
His industry is only exceeded by his zeal for higher learning. while his
;- intellectual attainments and genial nature add charm to strength and in! tegrity of character. All who know him speak his name with pleasure.
He was born in 1871 in the quiet and unassuming hamlet of Black Jack,

him for Baker University. In the fall of 1894, Mr. O'Neil entered the E.

very ea;ly youth a sweet modesty and reserve concealed her many native
charms and talents. As she grew older these said charms and talents
like unto the curls of the novel-heroine, would creep out. They are now
viewed by an admiring and ever sympathetic public. Among Miss
Riggs'. various claims to fortune and to fame is the fact that she is
" ·".miisical. She is a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity and
. although she enjoys society much she prefers writing forensics for her

where she has pursued both the piano and vocal courses. This year sh~'·i
has devoted her efforts solely to piano in which she graduates this spring.
However, to interested friends we give the consolation that her remarka- ,

next year, and later abroad, after which we may look for her among the,
leading prima donnas of the 'Yest.

education was received mostly under private instructors until she entered the second year of the 'High School. Here the trials met with in
mathematics led her to make a specialty 9f the languages. Her intelectual powers unfolded until finally she publicly proved her ability to seek
new fields of study by depicting Gipsy life in all its weirdness, imd was
granted a diploma. The following fall she entered the University and
became a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity. She con-_

From 1865 through 1890, high school students in Lawrence, KS attended school
at the Central School, primarily an elementary school. Those high school
students wishing to attend the University of Kansas usually entered KU's
"preparatory" department rather than the local high school until the
department was discontinued in the mid-1880s, since graduation there meant
guaranteed admission. The following list of students graduated from the
Central School was taken from the First Annual Report of the Board of
Education for the Years 1868 - 1885, which can be found at the Watkins Museum.

LAJiRENCE OLD HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES ~903

Lawrence's first official High School, later called Old High, was built on
the east side of Warren (now Kentucky) Street across from the old Central
School. The first classes in Old High were held in the fall of 1890. The
curriculum was set to Kansas University admission standards, and therefore it
became the state's preparatory school for KU, drawing students from areas
outside Lawrence. In 1900, the old Central School was demolished and new
Central was constructed, and some high school classes held there. This list of
members of the class of 1903 comes from The Windmill, Vol. 1, No.9, published
by the high school 29 May 1903, and donated to the Watkins Museum by Richard
Riggs. The "biographies" were compiled by Eugenie STERLING in 1903. Researched

WIEDElfAlIN'S lfElfORIES OF EARLY LNiRENCE SCHOOL DAYS

Taken from the Lawrence Daily Journal World, 6 Dec. 1941. Submitted by the
Watkins Museum.
Mrs. WIEDEMANN recalls that first she attended school in a building
across the street from her home, then later went to Turner Hall at Tenth and
New York Streets. In the upper grades and for part of her high school course
she was a pupil at the Old Unitarian Church, in the 900 block of Ohio, the
same block in which her father later built a home and where she and Mr.
WIEDEMANN lived with her parents for some years after their marriage.
The basement of the church was used for the lower grades and the main
room for the upper grades and high school. It was heated by stoves in which
green wood was burned and to keep the sap from dripping into the room, buckets
were hung along the stove pipe one at each joint.
In 1866 the Old Central School was built, and here Mrs. WIEDEMANN
finished her high school work. Miss Sarah BROWN and Mrs. CARPENTER taught high
school classes, which were held in the upper rooms.

lfElfORIES OF BLUE HOUND COLORED SCHOOL
Extracted from Memories of Early Days in Kansas, by Anna Smith IRWIN, written
8 Jul 1938, and available at the Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka.
The first school house built was for the colored people who could neither
read nor write. It was located in the north east corner of the OGDON farm, now
known as the DUNNING farm. Aunt Emma KILWORTH who was about 15 years old
taught the school. Most of the pupils were colored. Queen HINES was very
anxious to learn and sat by the door to watch her children who were playing
outside. Anna BROOKS attended this school and told me what I have just
written. (NOTE: Emma KILWORTH later became Mrs. JACOBS.)

lfISS COATHRUP, ENGLISH TEACHER
I was sent to school to a very charming English teacher Miss COATHRUP ...
She was engaged to teach French at the University of Kansas, but she had such
a strong English accent that the University people were very much opposed to
having her continue to teach because the students had difficulty understanding
her. She came from a very fine family and she decided the only thing she could
do was have a little school. From Fond Memories of My Eighty Years in
Lawrence, by Claudia Pendleton Johnson (privately published, 1966), p.11.
Submitted by the Watkins Museum.
