OBITUARY OF JOHN CHARLES SAUNDERS
This obituary appeared in the Lawrence Journal World, October 15, 1936.
Submitted by Carol Whitson.
John Charles SAUNDERS was born October 2, 1859, on the homestead near Sibley,
Kansas Territory, which his father, the late capt. Henry T. SAUNDERS, had
received from the United States government in 1854, when he and his wife, and
four small children pioneered from Massachusetts to Kansas. In 1864, the
family moved to Lawrence and again in 1883 from Lawrence to a farm a short
distance east of town which is now known as the Park HETZEL, Sr., home. On
November 9, 1899, John Charles SAUNDERS and Ida WALTERS, also a native of Kaw
valley, were married and established another home, the one where each of their
six children was born and which has remained the family home from then until
now.
On October 15, 1936, death came into this happy circle for the first
time and removed the husband and father, leaving to mourn his absence his
faithful and loving companion, Mrs. Ida SAUNDERS; his children and
grandchildren, Mildred J. and Philip M. of the home, Mr. and Mrs. Miles W.
SAUNDERS and daughter, Carol Mae of Lawrence, Mr. and Mrs. James H. SAUNDERS,
Mr. and Mrs. William J. SAUNDERS, Mr. and Mrs. Harold SAUNDERS and baby
daughter, Catherine Estelle, all of Kaw Valley; a sister, Mrs. Park HETZEL,
Sr., of Kaw Valley; three brothers, Frank M. SAUNDERS of Chicago, Eben R:
SAUNDERS of Topeka, since deceased, and Robert S. SAUNDERS of Lawrence, and
three sisters and two brothers.
Coming from a family of sea captains, a fondness for the water and an
instinctive love for the wilds made him a naturalist. He spent much of his
time on the Kaw river and along its banks fishing, trapping and hunting studying, observing and learning; always on the alert for some animal trait
that was new to him, some habit with which to increase his own knowledge or
which would be of value to others, especially during his fourteen years'
service as assistant at the Dyche museum at the University of Kansas.
In 1892 a collection of valuable specimens from the museum was entrusted
to him to be taken to Chicago and placed on exhibition at the world's fair.
This collection was awarded a high honor and for his connection with it, he
was presented a diploma of honorable mention by the managers of the World's
Columbian Commission.
During the year 1905 he spent several months in service of the Carnegie
Biological Institute of Arts and Sciences at Cold Springs, Harbor, Long
Island, N.Y.
Of late years, however, most of his life had been with those he loved
and amid surroundings so dear to his heart. He became known as a builder of
boats and a maker of nets and inspired by his love of music and his knowledge
of wood he made with his own hands musical instruments, including a violin and
a tiny guitar. He was never happier than when surrounded by a group of boys,
explaining and teaching in his quiet, thoro way, the secrets of the birds or
other dwellers of the woods or river. Even during his last illness, he was
ever listening for the call of some special bird and was always interested in
the daily happenings of his beloved outdoors.
After an illness of five weeks, "Charlie" SAUNDERS was called to explain
the mysteries and treasures of another world but he left a heritage of great
worth to those with whom he had come in contact, and whose lives are richer
and broader because of his having passed this way.

PRAIRIE CENTER CBlfB'l'BRY, JOHNSON COUlI'rY, KS
Prairie Center Cemetery is located just over the Johnson County Douglas County line, near Hesper Church, across Captain's Creek and about a
half mile south of the road. It was first called the Hale Cemetery.
The first plot of ground was two acres given to the cemetery by the HALE
family. In 1911, John and Hannah GARRETT gave another acre to the west. The
first burial, according to one of the gravestones, was Joseph HALE in 1862.
Early officials of the Prairie Center Cemetery Association were Benton SCOTT,
O.C. CAMP, and Charles HOYT.
According to Memories of Prairie Center, by Edwin Rice, and Eudora
Community Heritage, the cemetery had always been taken care of by the lot
owners. A day was set aside when everyone was supposed to come and mow their
lots, but this did not prove satisfactory. Therefore, Prairie Center and
Lexington Cemeteries were put in a benefit district in the early 1930's, with
a caretaker hired through a tax levy. The Cemetery Board hired Bert MOON as
the first caretaker.
In 1942, the Sunflower Ordnance Works bought the land around the area,
including Prairie Center Village. The road leading to the cemetery from the
south had to be abandoned, as it was in the plant area, but the cemetery
remains.
These tombstone inscriptions were read by the D.C.G.S. Cemetery Book
Committee • .submitted by Jean Snedeger.

Continued from Vol. XV, No.2. This list was extracted and alphabetized from the Report of the Adjutant
General,of the State of Kansas, Vol~ 1, 1861-1865, and another volume for the year 1864, which can be found in
the Lawrence Public Library Kansas Collection, as well as the Kansas State Historical Society Library in
Topeka. The first volume (1865) contains only the 1st through 11th Regiments. In the 1865 report, the Adjutant

General notes that his office does not have complete records for all soldiers, and other records are
incomplete. Other records conflict so that "a discriminating judg'ement often has to be exercised." Many cases
involve men captured or wounded or who voluntarily returned from desertion where the records did not report
this. Likewise, when a whole regiment was mustered out, all its members were usually recorded as being
mustered out on that date, regardless of whether they were actually present, out on detached duty or in the
hospital. In this extraction, only those who list Doulgas County residences are recorded here, and in many
cases the original records did not record the residence. It will also be noted that where the name of a
location in Douglas County is the same as the location name in another county, all those whose residences
could have been in Douglas County were extracted. Also, where discrepancies exist between the two volumes, the
1865 volume information is used i f possible, since it was published later and contains many corrections. Some
notes indicate which volume was used (1865 is used as the date of the 1861-1865 volume). The 1864 volume lists
some birthdates and places where the later volume does not, and these are noted.
