Schott served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946. Schott was born on September 14, 1920, in Globe, Kansas. As a teenager, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). He was inducted into the Army on July 6, 1942, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He completed basic training at Fort Eustis, Virginia. In 1944, he went to Europe. He served in England, France, Belgium, and Germany as a searchlight repairman. Title A name given to the resource Eugene Bovee World War II Interview Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Bovee, Eugene Description An account of the resource Eugene Bovee was drafted into the United States Army in May 1942. He served as a military intelligence lieutenant with a censorship group until 1945. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston, Bovee talked about his military experiences during World War II. Bovee was born on April 1, 1915, in Sioux City, Iowa. He went to Morningside College in Sioux City and then to Iowa State Teachers’ College. In 1941, he started graduate school at the University of Iowa and began teaching high school. After being drafted in 1942, he attended several training schools, including military personal training at Camp Grant, Army Clerical School, Officer Candidate School, and Adjutant General’s School of Administration in Washington, D.C. Bovee then went to Cheltenham, England and France. He mostly worked in censorship and spent his days censoring soldiers’ letters. Following the war, he received a master’s degree from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of California in Los Angeles. Bovee then became a professor at the University of Kansas. He retired in 1985 and passed on October 20, 2005. Title A name given to the resource John Weatherwax World War II Interview Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Weatherwax, John Description An account of the resource John Weatherwax served in the United States Army (Company A, 33rd Infantry Division, 136 Infantry Regiment) from 1941 to 1946. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on November 13, 2006, Weatherwax talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Weatherwax was born on December 24, 1920, in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated high school in 1938. He then attended the University of Kansas and joined the ROTC. He received his commission in June 1941. After Officer’s School, he spent time at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii and then went to New Guinea and Morotai, where he engaged in combat. Weatherwax earned three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, and a Combat Infantry Badge. He returned to Lawrence, Kansas on August 14, 1945. He then served in the Reserve until 1950. Following his service, Weatherwax became a CPA and taught at the University of Kansas. He passed away on August 29, 2008. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on September 29, 2003, as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Stoneback talked about her experiences during the war. Stoneback was born in Concordia, Kansas on April 5, 1915. She was raised in Lawrence, Kansas. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1933 and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in business. She then joined the Army Air Corps in 1940 and moved to Washington, D.C. While there, she received a promotion to work for General Hap Arnold. In 1941, she transferred to Kansas City to work a civil service job in the Army Finance Office. In June 1944, she joined the Army Air Corps again and moved to California. She eventually moved back to Lawrence, married, and raised a family. Stoneback passed away on February 20, 2017. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Stannard talked about the war effort at home and her experiences during that time. Stannard was born on March 6, 1927, in Hawthorne, California. After the United States joined the war in 1941, several of her brothers joined the Navy and Merchant Marines. When she was sixteen, she spent a summer assembling wings on dive bombers for Douglas Aircraft. The following summer, she did timekeeping for a shipyard. After the war, Stannard went to Pepperdine University. Stannard passed away on May 2, 2019. Interviewed by Karen Bentley on May 26, 2003, as part of the Lawrence Remembers: The World War II Years Project, Payton talked about her experiences during the Second World War. Payton enlisted in the Women’s Marine Corps in 1945. She went to boot camp in North Carolina. He served in the 489th Squadron as a clerk-typist. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on June 28, 2007, Steffen talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Steffen was born in Haviland, Kansas, on September 18, 1922. He was raised in Eudora, Kansas, and graduated high school in 1940. He then attended Lawrence Business School and began working at Sunflower Ordnance Works in 1941. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He was first stationed in Midland, Texas, where he worked as the secretary to the commanding general of ACE. He then transferred to the Air Transport Command in Greenwood, Mississippi, and later went to Lunken Air Force Base in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was discharged on February 14, 1946. Following the war, Steffen worked for Charlton Insurance for seventeen years. He passed away on October 5, 2017. Radke served in the United States Army (Infantry), 88th Division, Fifth Special Forces Airborne. Interviewed by Deborah Pye on November 8, 2006, Radke talked about his military experiences after the Second World War. Radke was born in Ohio in 1928. He enlisted in the Army in 1945 and went to basic training in New Jersey. Radke has an extensive 30-year military career. From 1947 to 1948, he was in the TRUST Troopers in Trieste, Italy. After Officer Candidate School (OCS), he went to jump and Ranger school in the 1950s. During the 1960s, he served as the commander of Special Forces Thailand (46th Special Forces Company). Radke passed away on August 16, 2017. He was originally trained as a gunner and engineer on the B-17, but then trained and worked as a gunner on the B-29. He was discharged in October 1945. Proctor was born on June 6, 1922, in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Pennsylvania. After being drafted, he trained in Salina, Kansas. He then went overseas to Saipan. He was first assigned to the Infantry (411th Division), and then transferred into the Army’s 382nd Field Artillery, where he served as the ammunition sergeant. He was medically discharged in 1945. Interviewed by Brian Grubbs on June 22, 2007, Plank talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Plank was born in Garden City, Missouri on August 18, 1919. He went to basic training at Camp Claiborne in Louisiana and then went to school in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Plank passed away on October 22, 2016. Piller World War II Interview Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Piller, Robert J. “Bob” Description An account of the resource Robert J. “Bob” Piller was drafted into the United States Army (395th Infantry Regiment) in 1943. He was discharged in 1945. Interviewed by Brian Grubbs on October 5, 2006, Piller talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Piller was born on November 19, 1924, in Great Bend, Kansas. Following high school graduation in 1942, he went to Notre Dame before transferring to the University of Kansas. Upon being drafted into the Army in 1943, he went to basic training at Camp Maxey in Paris, Texas. After basics, he went to Europe. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and the German attack at the Danube River on April 27, 1945. Piller received two Bronze Stars for his service. After the war, Piller went back to KU to complete his degree. He passed away on October 7, 2010. He served in the 13th Armored Regiment, First Armored Division, Company H, 3rd battalion. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on November 6, 2007, Percy talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Percy was born on November 11, 1923, in Carlyle, Kansas. He graduated high school in 1942. After joining the Army, he went to basic training at Fort Riley in Kansas. Throughout his service, he was a troop bugler. He served in North Africa and Italy. He received a Presidential Unit Citation and a Purple Heart. After the war, he received a bachelor’s degree in music education from Washburn University, a master’s degree from Emporia University, and a Ph.D. He worked as a teacher and for the state of Kansas. Percy passed away on February 12, 2011. Title A name given to the resource William Pendleton World War II Interview Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Pendleton, William Description An account of the resource William Pendleton served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946. He also served in the Reserve Corps from 1946 to 1953. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on March 3, 2006, Pendleton talked about his military experiences during the Second World War. Pendleton was attending the University of Kansas when he joined the Army. He was first sent to New Guinea in 1944 and served as an engineer boat and shore officer. He also worked as the postmaster. Pendleton then took part in the invasion of Borneo with the Australian Army. He had many roles, including the finance manager. After Borneo, he spent several weeks in the Philippines until the war ended. He was discharged in March 1946. He then went back to KU and received a degree in economics in 1947. In 1954, Pendleton started law school at KU and graduated in 1957. That same year, he started his own law firm in Lawrence, Kansas. He also worked as a municipal court judge. He passed away on May 15, 2015. Interviewed by Deborah Pye on December 4, 2007, Parker talked about her experiences during the Second World War. Prior to joining the American Red Cross, Parker was a teacher. She attended Red Cross training in Washington, D.C. at American University. She was then sent to the Philippines to work in a mission hospital. After a year and a half there, she contracted malaria and came back to the United States to work as a teacher again. Following Germany’s surrender, Parker joined the Army’s Special Services Section. She spent two years working at the service club in Augsburg, Germany. During World War II, Pacheco was stationed in New Caledonia. He took part in the invasion of Guam and Okinawa. After Japan surrendered, he was in the first unit to land on Japanese soil. While there, he worked as military police. Following the war, he worked guard duty on Treasure Island in San Francisco. Throughout his military career, he also served as a troop handler, advisor, drill instructor, and recruiter. Pacheco passed away on April 14, 2016. Description An account of the resource Orvel Criqui served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on August 23, 2007, Criqui talked about his experiences during the Second World War. Criqui was born on May 28, 1924, in Melvern, Kansas. He graduated high school in 1942 and became a teacher. He then volunteered for the Navy Air Corps. He took training classes at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and then went to New Mexico for flight training. While there, he became ill and was sent to a hospital in San Diego. He could no longer be in the flight program, so he went to boot camp. He was then diagnosed with pneumonia and scarlet fever. Criqui was medically discharged in 1946. Upon returning home, he attended Emporia State University and resumed teaching. Criqui passed away on November 12, 2008. Title A name given to the resource George Mozingo World War II Interview Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Mozingo, George Description An account of the resource George Mozingo was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1945. The Japanese surrendered while he was in basic training at Sheppard Field in Texas. After training, he worked as a postal clerk in Spokane, Washington. Prior to and during the war, Mozingo worked as a farmer, a blacksmith, and for a railroad company. Because he did essential war work, he was deferred from the draft until 1945. Interviewed by Pattie Johnston on August 10, 2006, Mozingo talked about working for the railroad industry and his experiences during the Second World War. Mozingo was born in Strauss, Kansas, on October 19, 1915. He passed away on November 8, 2007.
